I thought that cat looked wrong also. But I hear cats are hard to do correctly. Most I see, the face/head is not right.

I could tell you stories about getting screwed by Taxidermist, just like gunsmiths. IMO most of the ones I have dealt with you need to triple the timeframe they tell you to get your stuff back, and you may not even get you animal back from the taxidermist.

I personally know two people who lost their lions to one crook in Benson, AZ.

From what I've seen cats must be incredibly difficult to get right. I got a nice cat a few years ago and took it to a local guy. It took me 4 months to get back. I had him make a rug for me. It weighed 28 lbs. Biggest cat I ever killed was 32 lbs. Biggest one I ever saw was 35 lbs. One of the guys shot it on a club hunt.

He did a decent job on the facial expression but he used a form one size too small. Also, he trimmed way too much fur off of the stomach which is the most valuable part of the fur. Makes me wonder.

Go to ebay and look for taxidermy bobcats and get a few laughs.

Have heard that about cats as well. But have seen a lot of goofy looking coyotes too. More that look bad, than ones I'd want in my house, actually.

Cats are hard to do and I don't really understand why. They have all those reference marks on them to help you ensure that you get the hide properly aligned on the form.

As for the pics on that thread, the only real problem I see has to do with the grooming. Ear placement is good. The cant of the pupils is fine. The various angles of ears to eyes to jawline are within acceptable limits. The taxi or the customer seems to feel the need to brush the hair down. When I got one mounted - coyote, coon, cat - I always took the last step of fluffing the hair by using my compressor to blow the hair from the tail forward, same as I do on pelts on the stretcher, to give the guard hairs a natural erected pose as the skin dries. Had this guy done this and gotten those side tufts properly fluffed, those cats would look pretty good, for unprimed, short-haired summer cats.

What stood out to me was the unnaturally long neck, cat on the right. But, bad taxidermy is insulting.

Getting a cat back in four months is nothing to complain about. You know, the big processers use a tank that looks almost exactly like a cement mixer on a truck. If you hit the season wrong, you could be waiting a lot longer than four months because the tanners that the taxidermists use need to fill up a vat or wait until they get a full load. Whatever the chemicals are that they use, I'm sure that they want a full load.

What usually looks decent, at least to me, are birds. They must be a lot easier? Oh sure, anybody can fuck up anything, but generally, I see some pretty nice geese, ducks and quail. Haven't seen too many turkeys for some reason? But most geese in flight are pretty well done.

My cat. $400 and 4 months. Small taxidermist up in the hills west of where I live. Mostly does deer.

Not really much of a remarkable cat. Back in the old days I killed hundreds of bobcats and some of them were really striking but I never had the money to spend on getting a rug done. Now I have the money and don't get a lot of cats. Around where I live the cats seem to be well marked but small. When this guy came in I hit him with my Swift and lucked out. The bullet struck him in the chest and traveled the length of the body never exiting.

I'd say you got a good deal and a nice looking rug.

Of course, a rug is nothing like a full body mount, in terms of difficulty.

Looking at that cat the main thing is it's a southern type cat with no fur.
I guess everyone thinks their cat is like the western type cats and they aren't.

Are you referring to the mount pic or this recent rug?

Sorry the mounted cat.

The rugged cat looks good and a totally different cat from a northern region.

It's actually a California Mojave Desert cat. Shot in late November. Eastern Oregon cats pull in big money. Unfortunately I haven't even seen an eastern Oregon bobcat.

Plenty of California and Nevada bobcats, tho. Nevada bobcats are off limits for all but residents now days.

Actually, Moe. I have hunted up that way, southeastern Oregon. The cats up there look exactly like northern Nevada "Linx Cats". They are long legged long bodied, slate gray and not spotted much except for the belly. They are quite a bit bigger than California desert and Sierra cats but they weigh about the same. And, the buyers pay a high premium for them.

And yes, non res can't take them anymore! Which is bullshit when we have local guys up there killing over 400 a season. That means there are more than enough to go around, especially when called instead of leg hold or caged.

Sore subject with me.

Good hunting. El Bee

I know there are bobcats around but in the areas where I hunt I haven't seen a single one. With a furbearer's license you can hunt bobcats at night so I took my stepson over and we hit it hard. Not a damned thing.

I like calling the lava buttes for coyotes. They look like they should be crawling with chukar and quail but I've not seen a single game bird over there. Some guys hunt further south for birds. Over near Jordan Valley I've kicked up pheasants on my way out to a stand. I've seen obvious signs of wolves over there, too. The state says there aren't any but they denied they were in the state until there was proof positive and they had to admit it.
