I went to my favorite place on earth, Lake Powell for 24 days. Here are some photos. I'll chime in later and talk about some of them when I get a chance. Still haven't cut the grass, I've been so busy. edited in: click the link below for a slide show

Great place Az & thanks for pics, the last time ( only time ) i was on Lake Powell was in the mid 70's . Waweep(sp?) Marina was a couple of house boats & buoys . We rented a 50ish ft. Houseboat for a week+ & had as good a time as I've ever had on the water in the USA. I had my hot rod jet boat & 2 Kawasaki jet skis & miles of open water.

....and your pick of any one of several hundred private little bays to spend a night. It's amazing that it never seems crowded, plenty of adventure for anybody, never hear of rowdy party people on that lake, like you DO hear other places. Maybe because it's so damned awesome?

Of course, you will spend more than other places, Shasta, Lake Mead, Mojave, etc. By the week, comparable size houseboat, Lake Powell is significantly more money and there is always a demand for holidays, etc.

But, it's worth it!

I've been to Powell at least 20 times. A group of us fishermen had a spot that we could drive in to and few people knew about it. We could launch from the sand banks but you better have a spare full size 4x4 to pull you out. We haven't been able to do those drive in trips since the drought started 15 years ago. Since then I've been on two trips on rented house boats. Two years ago I got into a owner operated corporate house boat. The officer positions are elected positions. We have 14 members so I own 1/14th of the boat. We each have one prime week and one non prime week. If someone cannot use their week, they release it to the president. He has first shot at free weeks because of all the work required. If he doesn't use it, he notifies all of the other members via email. That is how I managed to get the extra time. I like my non prime week better than my prime week due to the extra time available.

Powell has a rodent problem so I left the coyotes alone. They are hunting in Friendship cove and I have no idea how they get down there and back out. Cliffs pretty much surround that cove, but there is a long rocky shore just above the water line that maybe leads to a path to the surrounding plateau.

As it turns out the houseboat is getting long in the tooth so to speak. The pontoons need rebuilt and we don't know if the other members will be willing to spend the extra money to fix her up. I am willing but like all of us we have financial limits that may be triggered if too many members drop out. The president is trying to get some firm repair estimates before the next board meeting.

It was just the wife and myself and it was a blast. You have to handle a lot of heavy things but my back is almost recovered and ready to go again. I cannot wait, and will probably buy into a newer house boat if we have to junk our current one. The wife also sees what I like about Powell during the off season, the solitude. We saw maybe 2-3 boats per day. On one lucky day we didn't see any boats. I'll buy into another house boat that is self managed if we don't fix her.

Interesting! I had no idea there were those type of arrangements with houseboats? Definately something to consider.

But, where is it? A marina on Powell or are you trailering it?

There are many varieties in house boat ownership. There are management companies that sell time shares and the management company controls the boat. You would pay them a buy in fee and a annual maintenance fees for one or two weeks. The management company has the boat repaired and cleaned between owners. This work is contracted out, and the management firm charges a fee like 20% to cover its costs. They reset the annual maintenance fees according to current repairs needed and they usually sell the boat out in 10-15 years and divide the income among the time share owners less their management fees.

On the older boats you have to buy in by buying out a current owner. The bylaws differ between each owner operated and owner controlled house boat corporation. The owners need the liability protection of a corporation. We also carry a million dollar liability policy on ours. One boat I looked at, the person was selling for 4,000.00 for one week of use. You got to use the other owners weeks if they didn't use them. However, you also had to pay a $900.00 fee per week to pay for the wear and tear on the boat.

It is the type of deal where you had better read the fine print and/or bylaws before you buy.

been to Lake Powell several times myself, with friends that had a time share on a house boat. I say, "had" because they have since gotten a divorce and out of the time share world.
Always had a great time, although I'm not much of a water fan, but the fishing, man the fishing was almost always worth it.
We went one time knowing the house boat was down a motor. We thought we knew the fix, so we went as scheduled. Turns out we didn't have the fix and as a result we had a really close call in the open channel with high winds that came in on the leading edge of a thunder storm.
That hole in the rock has some interesting history to it.
Thanks for sharing the pics.
