I put an ad on Cragslist to help my brother in law sell his truck and I get this email in this morning:

"Hello, I'm very interested in your ford! Can you tell me something more about it, like miles, vin number, if it has any problems, pictures"

OK so far and I reply with this: "I put the ad up but it isn' my truck. I am carbon copying this email to my brother in law who owns the truck."

Then he replies with this: "I will move in US next month and I need this Ford, I'm in United Arab Emirates right now, how can we work to make this deal together? Do you have a clean title?"

With the broken English in the above reply I can hear the crappy accent. I'm leading him on with this reply: "Yes I have a clean title, but have no idea of how to make this work."

BTW: The title isn't clean. I'll update with his next move.

What does clean title mean? Is that when you are making payments to the bank?

Personally, I don't know why you don't just delete the message like any other scam? I get offers virtually every day from somebody wanting to give me a multi million dollar inheritance. From somebody I never heard of.

Or, is this a case of a cat playing with a mouse?

Play him along.
I'm really curious how he's going to justify the logic of you needing to send him money to sell your truck to him. Or will he just want your banking info ??

A clean title means it is not a salvage title and their are no lien holders. This title has a credit union as a lien holder.

Here is his response:
"I would like to pay if it is possible to hold it, what do you think? Could you give me a contract or something? How would you like payment"

Here is my reply: "If the truck is still available when you get here, I will require a cashier's check delivered to the credit union that has the lien on the truck. Once the check clears, the credit union will give you title."

Does sound hokey to me, too. Just as a word of warning…you are smart to not take a cashier’s check for granted anymore, either.

We have caught a bunch of bogus cashier’s checks this past year here at the bank. The advent of online selling has opened up quite a cottage industry of scammers. With the relatively low cost of quality color printers and editing programs, someone can take a legit check and duplicate them pretty easily.

Magnetic ink is used on checks so the machines can read check amounts, account numbers and routing numbers. Anyone off the street can buy those toner cartridges for the printers as well and turn out a seemingly good check until it finally gets to the paying bank and they find it is bogus.

Seller beware in this case…

I recently went back and forth, e-mails, texts, etc. for a "free motorcycle" on Craigslist, "just pay for the shipping to your home" ...and yeah it was sort of cat and mouse... I figured the time spent corresponding with me was time they couldn't use to steal money from others.

He/they were so adamant that the deal was real, and it all ended when I told them "for proof I want a photocopy of your [both parties asking for money] Florida drivers licenses" which I knew they could not provide.

Dead grandson, the bike makes them sad, moving to Canada, reputable shipping company name, but a private bank account number, no credit cards accepted, God and faith... classic (no class) stuff.

I have since flagged the ad, once, and someone else flagged it within minutes of when I first stumbled onto it.

I also recently replied to an ad for work needed, offering an outrageous amount per hour, and then received an e-mail with the directions to a completely different scam (*the "house manager scam" where you rent an apartment and buy groceries etc).

More so, than buyers and sellers, Craigslist has many more scams in the jobs section... preying on the desperate I suppose?

When I get too old, feeble & frail to hunt, I think that I'll make a hobby of jerking those people around just for yucks & giggles.

something weird just happened. I opened this thread and it showed two post of mine with the same comment. I went into edit and changed it to "oops I entered this in twice" and now the second entry is gone too.

What I basically said is he hasn't responded since my last reply. He is probably turned off by my payment methods. I've seen several scam ads on craigslist while looking at trucks. The trucks are always out of state and the seller has to sell immediately because they are being deployed to Afganistan. The price is always too good to be true too. Just a couple of days ago I saw a class c motorhome with 85000 miles for $5,000.00 which is too good to be true. One guy was wanting you to pay via paypal and claimed paypal buyer insurance would protect you which it doesn't if you read the fine print. Craigslist says to avoid scams by buying locally face to face.

The kid across the street actually sent $2,000 to this hot chick in Russia for plane fare, a while back. Then, she said she needed another $600 for a visa or something and he suddenly got suspicious, mainly since he didn't have it? So far as I know, he never heard another thing from her?

I've been saving a little from my SS checks, each month....she was so hot, young, blonde, with nubile lips, and sincerely loves me, sight unseen! I will pole-vault to the WesternUnion the first of the month. Can't wait!

No really, there are idiots out there anxious to be parted with their money.

Funny you bring that up Leonard. My son's wife's exhusband is a really smart guy when it comes to real estate. He made a ton of money in rentals before 2007 but lost everything in the great recession because he was to heavily leveraged. Well he is back on top making tons of money again. Just bought a house and a new Bemmer cash. His credit is too messed up because of a bankruptcy in 2008 to finance the house. We know this because my son's wife was on title for much of the property with him and she had to go bankrupt too because of it. He is being scammed by a Russian gal. We don't know how much. We just know because he always gets phone calls at the same time of day. We do know he sent to her some very expensive perfume.

You must have accidentally double clicked and posted twice. I just deleted the second one; not that weird.
