This year marks the 25th year I started teaching hunter education. When I started in 1989, most of the students were rambunctious 10 to 13 year old boys. Over the years, we started getting more and more females, and for the last 8 years, about 50% of the students I have had in class are female. This is really pretty cool, and shows that they are really getting into shooting and hunting.

What is interesting though, is the age of the males taking the class seems to be going up. Here in Kansas, you can hunt until you are 16 before you have to buy a hunting license, but if you want to buy a license at 16, you have to have hunter ed. Anyone under 16 may hunt without hunter ed as long as they are in the supervision of someone 18 or older that has a valid license.

I am really seeing a large number of 20 and 30 somethings taking hunter ed so they can go hunting for the first time.

Guess this leads me to believe that shooting and hunting isn’t as big a priority as it was to my generation, (age 50 plus). It’s good they are coming to class, but a class I did this last weekend was really telling. I was doing the gun handling portion, and almost all of the guys, (13 to 35), had no clue how to operate a pump action, a break action or didn’t know how to operate the lever on the lever action—(guess they have never watched a western).

I had an 11 year old girl ask a question in a class I did in March about how to field dress a deer. As I was explaining the process, a 30 year old male student stood up and walked out of the room. After I finished, I gave the class a break and tried to find him thinking something was wrong. He told me that he got sick just LISTENING to me explain the field dressing process!

I asked him why he was in the class and he said he is marrying a girl whose family hunts…guess they will be surprised when he actually has to watch it happening!

Just seems that what used to be a given here in my part of the world seems to be going away.

My parents bought me my first rifle, a JC Higgens 22, when I was 15. As part of the deal I had to take hunter safety with the Optimists Club near the Oakland airport. They had a clubhouse and a range with a good shooting program for kids. Mossberg 22 target rifles included. It was an NRA course they taught. I guess the NRA still offers hunters safety but states like California and Oregon don't recognize it.

When I was a kid I had a BB gun and shot tons of birds out of our soft fruit trees. I couldn't wait to go deer, duck, goose or pheasant hunting. As I lived on my granparents' farm when my dad was at sea with the Navy I learned how to chop heads off chickens and clean rabbits. I also watched my cousins dress out deer many times.

I do not understand kids who have no interest in going hunting and especially could not care less about going fishing. My entire family on both sides did it.

LOL Booger. That was probably a deal breaker for that guy getting married to "a girl whose family hunts." At the very least, it will be test if love can triumph over hunting/field dressing.

I might have been tempted to give a straight answer to the man that walked out. He will never make it, so why should he have to prove he has nuts to his wife's family? It's a big problem, if you don't have it by that age, you never will. An eleven year old girl makes a pussy out of a grown man. Kinda pathetic.

Good hunting. El Bee

I was kinda hoping you showed his ass to the Missouri state line and told him to never come back. That's a lose-your-man/Kansas-card offense if ever there was one. I'd have also told him to get his ring back because if that woman is wanting kids, his no-balls ass is probably not gonna fill the bill. Maybe, you might suggest, he should consider letting that 11 year old girl marry his fiancé.

That is some funny stuff, Lance...I can tell you it was hard for me to keep from laughing when he was telling me this!

AZ,
Thanks for the kind words…Hunter Ed is the only thing I concentrate on any more. I gave up the service clubs years ago just to do one thing really well.

I have had a very humbling year. In April, I was selected as the Kansas Hunter Ed Instructor of the year for 2013, and in June, I found out I was selected as one of the first instructors to get the ‘Champions of Hunter Education’ award by Davidsons and Gallery of Guns. Didn’t realize I had been nominated until I got a phone call informing me I had won.

Just so you guys can see my ugly mug, here is a link to the one of the press releases…I am the guy on the left! You have my permission to use the pic to keep the mice out of your various buildings!

Congratulations Tim!
It sure is nice to hear that someone like you is taking this so seriously and doing such a thorough job!
When my son went through it, 13-14 years ago, his instructors were pretty lame...

I was maybe 9-10 when I took it, and I honestly don't remember one single thing about it! [Smile]
