I believe what he says and I don't like it. The level of control possible (by government) is just too much. Just imagine a society where everything you do is monitored. That's where we're headed. Scary!

Personally, I have very little sympathy for manning or Ellsberg, but this guy, I can understand where he is coming from. But, will it make a nickel's worth of difference, in the slippery slope toward 1984? Doubtful. There is so much freedom lost, and nobody gives a shit. Do I worry about my grandchildren? Hell, yeah. But, they will never understand what they have lost. My generation might be the last to actually appreciate the loss of liberty, since I was young and admittedly; dumb.

This Snowdon might become a big celebrity, or the next Bobby Fischer recluse. 50-50 chance either way. Then again, they actually might "off him"? Don't think for a minute that Mr Hellfire Drone Obama wouldn't do it.

This guy releases info about the biggest data mining operation in the history of the world that will start in just a few months in a manner that didn't hurt anybody, and the Obama administration pulls phone records from who knows how many AP reporters to get him. When Obama said he would have the most transparent administration ever, he meant us not him.

I think I've already posted this but here it is again: http://www.npr.org/2013/06/10/190160772/amid-data-controversy-nsa-builds-its-biggest-data-farm

Looks like the guy's going underground, checked out of his Hong Kong hotel? He must have had contingency plans beyond this?

Many people are saying; "He broke the law." Well, my question is who wrote that secret law and why is it directed domestically? They say it has stopped terrorism that we don't know about, which is justification enough. Trust us.

I'm not sure what to think, at this point? The part about PRISM that I find startling is the ability to take an event and work backwards.

They suddenly notice koko goes to Russia. Bingo! And then go back to 2010, when he bought 5,000 pounds of fertilizer. Then, they find out he was sent home in the sixth grade for sticking Betty Ann's pigtail in the inkwell. He better have a good reason!

I'm sure they will use ALL of this info to protect us. After all they did such a great job stopping the Boston Bombers after receiving a tip from the Russians.

Who said "Bin Laden is dead and Al Queda is on the run." Doesn't that translate into meaning, we don't need a data collection center in Utah.

No........No........&........No.

I only went to Russia to meet a girl from Craig's List but they wouldn't let me in the country. They suggested I do `those things` in Denmark.

It was 5 pounds of fertilizer........somebody moved a decimal point a few places but I'm pretty sure I'll confess after a bit of water boarding.

That wasn't me in the sixth grade; I did fifth grade twice but never made it to the sixth.

Seriously; information that is collected NEVER goes away. It can be used or abused. J. Edgar Hoover would have a friggin' orgasm if he had access to the data collection methods we have today.
Is that a gun collection or an arsenal??
Why do you need more than a box of shells if you're only going hunting??
Have you ever been intoxicated during a period of time when you owned any or all of your arsenal??
Now imagine this kind of information getting mixed up with that of some turd three states away with the same name as yours.....or a S.S. number that's close to yours.
Who was it that said; Absolute power corrupts absolutely??

The Patriot Act needs to have words which says that only muslims within the US can be spied upon.

Otherwise, everybody gets dragged into the dragnet and that is the kind of power abuse that can't be allowed.

^^^^^ Well, that's not gonna happen any time soon. Discrimination and all that.
What we do need is some common sense in the area of profiling. A young, dark complected, bearded male flying alone with no luggage other than carry-on and a ticket paid for with cash might be worth a second look. Instead, we strip search a grandmother from Akron Ohio for carrying knitting needles.

First of all, those were NOT knitting needles, they were crochet hooks and they were NOT concealed, they were open carry for which you do NOT need a CCW permit, yet.

All this shit is about politically correct. We cannot search brown, bearded guys because that would be PROFILING, and our insane laws prohibit PROFILING.

So, to show how fair and equal we are, we have to strip search children and grandmothers; obviously citizens, obviously white, just to show how fucking democratic we are. The bad guys are laughing at us. They don't think we are fair and democratic, they think we are stupid....and, they're right!

We have LIBERALS to blame for the situation we are in. We must suffer because of their mental illness; it's insane, is what it is!

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: Liberals are also to blame for indoctrinating, (for example) a Medical Doctors' female child who learns to fear and hate her country and marry a friggin' terrorist asshole. Where the stupidity comes in is they didn't know about PRISM and had no exit strategy. People like this woman are a serious threat. Why? Because she looks just like us, except she thinks like a terrorist. That's why profiling has it's limitations.

Tough questions here IMO.I think what we need to make a somewhat intelligent decision is more info on the 'process'.Just what is this secret court about? What standards need be met to get approval for taps/access/etc?What's the process on picking the judges for that court? Is there review of decisions by other judges?etc.
There may well be adequate safeguards but we need some idea of what they are.Let's be honest with ourselves as well.If Bush was doing this(he was)at this time would we really be that upset? Many now bitching may not.On the other hand, others now saying 'it's OK',may then be opposed.
IMO,at a minimum, our citizens(only citizens)need more info to even discuss this intelligently with our elected officials.

Yes Bush was monitoring all electronic communications crossing our borders. Obama is doing the same thing plus he is building a "...gargantuan $1.2 billion complex at a National Guard base 26 miles south of Salt Lake City features 1.5 million square feet of top secret space. High-performance NSA computers alone will fill up 100,000 square feet."
Do they need this much storage and computing horse power to keep us safe from Koko? Or is it to keep a future despot leader in control of us and the rest of the world.

I did have issue with the patriot act at the time. But, you are probably right, different people would be complaining if an (R) was in the WH. The difference between then and now is a big matter of trust. Back with Bush we didn't have Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the Nowlin wire taps and of course the IRS doing the dirty work of the man currently in the white house. They won't call a muslim shooter in fort Hood gunning down soldiers screaming ala Akbar(sp) a terrorist; they campaign on the premise that al quada is defeated and 'radical muslims' are on the decline yet, they want us to turn a blind eye to expansion of the nsa. Sure, we trust they won't trample on the first and fourth amendment (sarcasm). Nope, its more of a matter of trust than it is politics, and I don't trust our fukin' gubmint!

Cross,
I hear you and agree 100%.As to the other side of the Bush thing,I suspect many felt as strongly against him since to them,he and the Supreme Court stole the election, and of course there's the whole iraq thing etc.
Like you I've had serious doubts about the 'Patriot Act' since day 1.One fear was control over abuse which may well have been a valid fear the way it looks.IMO,give almost any administration a broad and vague power and they will push it to the limit or beyond.Something I suspect Bush and particularly Cheney did time and again. Thus my questions about controls and checks that hopefully are in place. To show my bias,if Franks friend Ms Feinstein likes the law(cause she has a say in it's implementation cause of her committee role)and is screaming for Snowden to be prosecuted,I'm all for revisiting the Act and perhaps changing it or getting rid of it.Particularly now that some of it's drafters say it's being used contra to the original intent.
Maybe some of the lawsuits starting up will give us some info.Doubtful.Almost sent Rand Paul some $$ since he's seeking it to start a lawsuit of his own to get answers and stop excesses but I'm still unsure what to believe. In an era that a 'dirty bomb' or worse is possible.......
IMO is we don't know enough to know.

Edit:In review,IMO my last phrase above answers it.We don't know,we should know more,I'm going with the lawsuits and hope some clarity emerges.I can't just take 'their' word(s)at face value anymore.

Here is a good analysis about this subject.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/11/opinion/rowley-nsa-surveillance/index.html?sr=share bar_facebook

Here is a quote from the above article:
"Few graphs climb as sharply upward as this one tracing the line from 6 million government documents classified "secret" in 1996 to 92 million secret in 2011. What will be the figure in 2013? Will we need someone such as Snowden to tell us? Has Thomas Jefferson's notion that the bedrock of democracy rests on an informed citizenry become as "quaint" as the Geneva Conventions?"

edited in: My question is how many documents will be classified top secret in just one year of operation after the opening of the NSA site in Utah?

As predictable as sunrise,'sources' are now picking away at Snowden.Of course the starved media minions jump on these 'plants' from 'sources' and print them. Now he's a chinese spy, unstable, carrying secret documents/computers,and on and on.

CBS News confirms Sharyl Attkisson's computer hacked.

Sharyl Attkisson CBS

CBS News announced Friday that correspondent Sharyl Attkisson's computer was hacked by "an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions," confirming Attkisson's previous revelation of the hacking.

CBS News spokeswoman Sonya McNair said that a cybersecurity firm hired by CBS News "has determined through forensic analysis" that "Attkisson's computer was accessed by an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions in late 2012."

"Evidence suggests this party performed all access remotely using Attkisson's accounts. While no malicious code was found, forensic analysis revealed an intruder had executed commands that appeared to involve search and exfiltration of data. This party also used sophisticated methods to remove all possible indications of unauthorized activity, and alter system times to cause further confusion. CBS News is taking steps to identify the responsible party and their method of access."

Several months ago, Attkisson had reported suspected intrusions of her computers, including her CBS News work computer, prompting CBS News to hire a firm to look into the hacking.

Friday's announcement comes on the heels of last month's revelation that the Justice Department had seized the emails and phone records of Fox News correspondent James Rosen.

To be clear, the federal government has not been accused in the intrusion of Attkisson's computer; CBS News is continuing to work to identify the responsible party.

Sharyl Attkisson told Chris Stigall on his radio show that her computer had been mysteriously hacked. Attkisson, who has reported on Operation Fast and Furious and Benghazi and sparked ire from the White House while doing do, demurred on the source of the hacking but said CBS News was investigating it.

Erik Wemple reported earlier that CBS has corroborated Attkisson’s claim, and that whoever conducted it went after her material:

“A cyber security firm hired by CBS News has determined through forensic analysis that Sharyl Attkisson’s computer was accessed by an unauthorized, external, unknown party on multiple occasions late in 2012. Evidence suggests this party performed all access remotely using Attkisson’s accounts. While no malicious code was found, forensic analysis revealed an intruder had executed commands that appeared to involve search and exfiltration of data.

This party also used sophisticated methods to remove all possible indications of unauthorized activity, and alter system times to cause further confusion.

CBS News is taking steps to identify the responsible party and their method of access.”

Sounds preposterous, right? The paranoids are after her, etc.

And, somebody said they wouldn't bother monitoring HM. But, I think we are all under suspicion at Homeland Security. Think about it; guns, veterans, conservatives...they probably have a cell somewhere with my name on it.
