We all have our favorite coyote rifle (or shotgun as the case may be), but which was the worst you ever used?
My first coyote rifle was a Savage 340 B .222. It shot great, not much kick, small entries and frequently no exits.
Problem was the damned bolt worked so hard it was tough to get off a second shot, the bolt whacked the scope when I rechambered, I didn't trust the safety and it was one ugly gun.
It got the job done but I was sure glad to replace it with an older model Remington 700 BDL 22-250!

I havent really had one I hated. Probably the worst was a Rem700 17Rem. I like the caliber alot. I didnt have very good luck with that gun. It shot decent, not great but decent. I guess what really turned me off to it was a safety incident and I lost confidence in it.
I plan on having another soon. But I was glad to see it go down the road.

Worse one I ever had was a Winchester Mdl 70 in .270
Actually, I carried that gun for a good while before finally shooting my first coyote with it. Split that little bugger almost in two. Went out and got me a .243 that week.
The .270 is a great shooter, and I love it for deer hunting, but for coyotes, it's not all that great ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I bought a used rifle for the action a few years ago, it came with 3 boxes of shells. So before sending it off, I decided to go calling with it.
I brought the coyote in and stopped him broadside at 70 yards. I was used to shooting the light recoiling 17 Remington, and it didn't click in my brain to seat the stock firmly against my shoulder before pulling the trigger.
The recoil flung me off of my stool, the scope left my eyebrow bloody, and I got a nice shiner.
John-Henry was with me, and he said the coyote got knocked several feet when the bullet hit his near shoulder. It removed the far shoulder, and we never found a trace of the coyotes heart. He said it landed on his back and looked like something from a cartoon with all four legs straight in the air for several seconds before slowly melting down. I was flat on my back, several feet behind my stool looking at the mid morning stars, so I missed that part.
I decided that shooting 225 Grain PSP's out of a .338 Win Mag wasn't very fur friendly, and happily went back to my 17 Remington

My worst coyote rifle also happens to be my very best. It's a Remington model 700 .243 WIN. it is a bit of a generic rifle but I love it. I shoot plain old right out of the box Remington 80 grains. The rifle has a short little barrel, a nice Vari X II and a Harris.
I was humbled a few years ago when Quinton offered to buy it so he could steal the action to make a real rifle !!!!!
Q let me shoot one of his many 22-250's with his customized Loophole and reloads. I wanted to shoot a bowling ball sized rock at about 300 yards. Instead he made me go for the 2" rock. I'll be danged if I didn't hit that sucker (pretty close anyway) I would never of even attempted that shot with mine.
So If one of you Gun Gurus might help me, I'd like to steal Q's idea and convert my rifle into a real rifle!

The one that stands out in my mind was a Rem 700 BDL Varmint in 22-250. It shot extremely well but it had the shiniest stock and action I ever seen and weighed a ton with it's heavy barrel. The trigger was very light and the safety seemed to move to fire all by itself. I finaly found a new trigger for it after seeing my dad carry it off safe too many times in the same day, then wound up selling it shortly after that. Thing was I traded a gun worth twice as much for it simply because it shot so good.

Remington 700 BDL .17Rem. Remington ended up replacing the bolt and recrowning the barrel under warranty. The barrel was so rough I would only get a few shots out of it before the groups went to hell and I had to spend .30 mins scrubbing it.
That rifle had a very short life. Ended up using the action to build a .17M4, which is now one of my fav's and best shooting rifles.

Savage 12FV Great shooter but doesn't sling worth a shit. That top heavy barrel always wants to go back and point towards the ground.

Early M700 Varmint BDL 25/06.
Tack driver from a bench, sweet trigger. Embarassed me more than 1x when shooting under field conditions. Missed a 125 yard standing broadside coyote in front of one of my brothers the only time I ever took him calling. That was a rested shot off the top of my call box, even. Several other unexplained misses.
I had forgotten about that sling issue, it wasn't as bad as Dennis's, it just had the annoying tendancy to pull back on your shoulder all the time.
Traded it and $50 for an Encore, two barrels (1 unfired), and two sets of wood. Never looked back.

Bought a Ruger BearCat revolver to use as a trapline gun. Totally worthless. Most inaccurate handgun I've ever owned.

Used a 30/30 Marlin with a 4x Leupold for Coyotes when I was a kid.I don't miss it.

4 out of 5 Ruger Mini 14s I've had have been the worst for me. Like everything about the rifle except the inherent lack of accuracy.

I have 2 of them first is a ruger mini-14 spray and pray and an Interarms Mark-X in 22-250 it feeds shitty andI burned the barrel out on a p-dog shoot. I put a new bull barrel and stock on it,it shoots good but still feeds bad,can't get a quick second shot for nothing. ![[Mad]](mad.gif)

I gotta go with the Mini. Worst gun I ever shot (shot worse than I do), but on the other hand, funnest gun I ever shot (shot one in full auto once).

Worst gun without a question was the new .243 Short Mag. Couldn't get anything to shoot in it. 4" groups at 100yds.Needless to say' that gun didn't stick around very long.
