Well, Christmas came early and I did get the .204 Ruger I spoke about in an earlier thread.
The scope that came on it is a 6X24 with Mil-dots.
Don't want to sound stupid, but how in the heck do they work? I downloaded an article off the 'net tonight, and it sounds like they would work pretty slick if you had the time to figure out a distance on a known target that was sitting pretty much still.
I guess it will work for calling...Could someone offer an opinion on how one might use it in the field?

It depends on whether it is in the first focal plane or the second.

Log on to the Mildot Master site it is a good read. Or just type long range shooting into your search box. You will find a ton of good info to read. I did buy the Mildot Master thing they sale and it is kind a nice,it's just a how to book and a sort of slde rule sort of thing. But I did find the Mildot Master site to be a real good read.

Yep, do a lot of reading. Any mil based reticle is what you make it. Can be used as a ruler, rangefinder, or balllistic reticle.
I think it's safe to assume you have a SFP scope. That said, your mildot reticle will only measure 'true' on ONE magnification setting. So however you choose to use your reticle, it will be dependant on keeping the mag ring set at that given power...
On its accurate ranging magnifaction setting, one milradian in your reticle will subtend 3.6" at exactly 100yds.

Sir there is alot to read and some of it will be worth your time to read. But you will have to wade through alot of BS to find it. Back around 2005 there was a site that was plump full of good info on it.But I have long sense for got the name of it. This is all I found for now http://mil-dot Yet it does not seam to be as good of a site. your 6x24 sounds like it is a useful scope With a good field of view. I went with the SS20x42 a bit much for coyotes for sure lol. I would bet some on this site knows or has some good info to share or of a good site.
Edit, just to say look for this guy on youtube Ryan Cleckner. I just went to youtube and put how to use a mil dot scope in the search box. [ December 19, 2011, 12:50 PM: Message edited by: Cayotaytalker ]
