Jaw boning with Tim last week, about how we couldn't wait for cooler weather and some coyote hunting. Also, about how my Jeep needs new tires before the season starts and the fact that new tires right now are going to put a strain on the family budget.
Tim has an idea... Let's go skim some early cream while the getting is good for bounty money. Forecast was for low to mid 80's, actually a good 10 degrees cooler than it has been, so we decided to give it a whirl.
Hunted two days, different area each day. Collected 7 the first day and 5 the second. Hit two more that weren't recovered, one I hit with my .17 at about 300 yards, and one Tim hit with the shotgun.
Lot of pups, of the 12, there were 7 pups and 5 old ones.
Took a shotgun and used it. A new experience. Knew some of the ground we'd be passing through, that I normally don't bother to call in, might be productive with a shotgun. And it was. I killed three with it and Tim killed one with it, and hit another that got on. Not news to anyone, just new for me, but the shotgun has it's place. Don't think I'll be too inclined to call shotgun stands or use one often for more "recreational" hunting, but on a straight up bounty money grab hunt like this was, I'll likely have it along.
$600 worth for the weekend. Good dent in a new set of tires.
First days take.
Processed them as we went on day two, instead of letting them get ripe first ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) .
Four "two pointers" (I still think that's just plain dumb...) taken.
The oldest old one taken.

Is that a backpack rig for the shottie? I normally crisscross a rifle and shotgun

edit: by the way, I also think "two pointers" is dumb. But, many years ago when we had teams hunting several western states, white tails were a dead give away for folks that were hunting along the border, either CA or mostly AZ. Later on, they started showing up in Nevada, but much later on.

Leonard, yeah, backpack straps deal. Haven't used it that way yet, just kept them together and slung it over one shoulder like normal.
Was thinking it could be handy if I had decided to carry both at the same time. Haven't actually tried it yet though.

Dan, I can't remember which contest it is, one of the larger ones, but a few years back they had a rule that a coyote with a white tipped tail counted as TWO coyotes! Never could be bothered with contest hunting anyway, myself, but that just struck me as particularly asinine? Could you imagine, losing because somebody happened to kill a couple white tips? Worse, just what "is" a white tip? And who gets to decide? I've seen them from pure black to pure white and every conceivable shade in between, to the point that I'd have no idea where you start calling them "two pointers"? Oh well, none of my affair, I got no truck with any of that.
Tom, that just happens to be the only shotgun I have that uses screw in chokes. True story, found it under my bed five or six years ago, still new in the box and honestly don't remember when or where I got it? Might have been my Dad's? Most likely.
But, anyway, got it in my head to try a shotgun however long ago that was. Long enough ago that the Dead Coyote shells I have are marked $24.95, which I thought was super outrageous at the time, but I guess they are about twice that much now?? So, outfitted it with a SpeedBead, got it patterned and all that happy crap. Then never used it. Until just now.
I don't know about the length, didn't seem to be an issue, but I ain't a shotgunner by any stretch of imagination, so I should probably listen to your advice. But before I'd put a cent into modifying that cheap 870 any further, I'd look into getting a semi auto. That thing just kicks like the proverbial mule. No fun at all to shoot! From a sitting position, kind of off centered and twisted, it turned me around more than 90 degrees on one shot. Not exactly smooth on the follow up...
There is no money in the cookie jar for it anytime soon, but I should search back through some of the old stuff here where shotguns are being discussed. Without knowing anything, just kinda what little has sunk in of what I've heard over the years, for the sake of keeping it simple, I think I'd just arbitrarily narrow it down to a Benelli, but no idea which Benelli.

Dave, get the Benelli M2, it is a hell of a shotgun. Then get you a aftermarket extended magazine tube. And you're in business eight or nine shots as fast as you can pull the trigger.

Sure, as long as there is two grand in that cookie jar, otherwise you might look into the new Remington, forget what it's called Vinci, victi something like that, or the (I think) 935 Mossberg.
I refuse to believe that you NEED a Benelli to kill a coyote. Yeah, they are nice, and for sure a status symbol. I'm probably jealous because I'm still using my old 835, which actually has a wood stock.
A cheap superposed 3" 12 gauge is not a bad choice, either. I have seen the new Winchester 101's going for just over $1000.
Of course, they will kick like a mule compared to an autoloader.
I think I paid about $300 for my Mossberg. With Dead Coyote, the recoil is fierce! I'm such a pussy!

edit: oh, the two points for a white tip was the brainchild of Brent Rueb, the organizer of the St. Francis hunt. But, I think he got shamed out of implementing it into the hunt rules; but I could be wrong, as usual?

My old 835 has done wonders for my spine. It has saved me thousands in chiropractor bills. Yep, a Benelli is the shit. Cant do any better.Ive run a couple of them but cant bring myself to get one for predator stuff. I shoot the lowly Mossy 930. Not even a 3.5 incher. Im a wuss and proud of it in this case.

Edit: if I had the extra dough laying around I probly buy one right now. But buying up various ammo is my priority currently..being in California and all.

Like I said, no chance of happening anytime soon. But I just googled it and looks like the M2 goes for $1,300 - $1,500 brand new.
Which barrel length do you have Chad? Which one would the rest of you guys get? Reckon Tom has already voted for the 21".

Dave, Mine has a 26" barrel.Perfect length in my opinion. I should say one of the reason I bought my Benelli was for Waterfowl. But it makes a fantastic predator rig. For alot of years i used my trusty 870 that i bought close to 40 years ago. But the Benelli is in another league. I wouldn't leave home without it anymore.

Question;
Have any of you guys running extended tubes had any problems with Game Wardens doing the "Three rounds in a shotgun.......tell it to the Judge" even though it's legal for predators ?????

Yeah...thats cheap.
I like a 24" barrel for my (predator) shotguns. The choke Im running right now sticks out about an inch so...lets see..thats like 29 inches? Ok 25ish.

Koko, no haven't had any problems with that one.
My M2 cost me around $1300. Most good auto loaders will run you at least a grand. The better ones will be more. Like $1500-2000.

Those prices are Cabelas. So I wouldn't think you could find anywhere to pay more? They are usually on the high end.

I bought mine through Buds gun shop,online. They have some pretty good deals sometimes. So if you have an FFL or know somebody who does it might be worth a look....

I paid $750 out the door for my M1 with a 21" barrel years ago, $1100 for my M2 with 18" tactical barrel.
Love my Benelli!

Nice job and that is some awesome country you get to call in, love the high desert.
My shotgun is a benelli SBE 2 and it seems to work pretty good, it does kick like a mule still.
I would like to get a shorter barrel but looking today a 24" is 500 bucks. For that money I'll stick with the 28".

I picked up a used 935 Mossberg about 6 months back. I just shot it last weekend. SOB that bastard kicks. I shot a few rounds of 7 1/2 birdshot to rough sight in the speed bead, and thought, hey this is sweet. Then I dropped in a 3.5 #4 Buck and realized why the guy traded it in before I bought it.
Been using my 3" Browning Gold turkey gun, but thought I needed the 3.5" gun, and the price was pretty low.

The M4 is supposed to be a better gun because I think it's gas operated instead of inertia operated. Basically if you hang enough stuff on an M1 or 2, it can malfunction with lighter loads. Though I have an extended magazine and have hung a big light on it with no problems but I don't shoot light loads much.
The M1 is the same thing as the M2 except the M2 has a polymer trigger housing. I traded my M2 with the pistol grip stock cause I hated the stock. You had to aim it instead of pointing it like a bird gun. The only downside to Benelli is their accessories are expensive. $400 for a barrel and $300 for a plastic stock.buy it like you want it cause you can't afford to alter it afterwards.
The Vinci was Beneli's fancy space gun and it is pure ugly to me, I don't care how it shoots.
