Spent the last couple days doing a lot of cleaning up and trimming around the backyard. At one point, the wife comes out to sit on the deck and visit with me. I went and sat down next to her and we watched the dogs run around while we talked. A couple crows flew over and our youngest rat terrier takes off across the backyard chasing after them. I told Lisa I would call them back. My e-caller was right inside the shop door so I grabbed it and sat it on the front step to the garage door and hit the buttons for single crow.

That crow comes back and lands in a tree in the small woodlot a hundred yards and change north of our back fence and just across a new street they recently built. It sits there mouthing off so I switched over to a jack distress sound. He kept fussing and after a minute or so, I just gave up on him.

A few minutes later, a black Chrysler comes down the new street and stops. Lisa asks what they're stopping for and I leaned forward to discover that all my calling had drawn what I, at first, thought was a small coyote from the trees. I watched it a second and it turned to reveal the large tail. It was a fox.

I walked back to the shop and grabbed an extra scope off the top of the old freezer I use to store reloading stuff and ammo in, took a look, and yup, big red fox. Probably a male. Very sun bleached and scratching a lot. No signs of mange though.

Mange wiped them out here in town about ten years ago and I haven't seen any since yesterday.

He sat out there looking toward me for most of ten minutes. I would occasionally give him a heads up with one of my hand calls to pique his curiosity again. Fun messing with him in town. Those people in the car were probably wondering why he was out there. Looked at the wife and said, "See?". First time she's seen me call anything (Doesn't like the cold and the walking.)

This pic is from our perspective. The fox is too far to see, between the left hand and middle poles just past the street you see. The second picture is the first one, zoomed and cropped.

Nice to see them coming back.

Seeing him made me realize I haven't seen any cats in the 'hood for a while. I like him being there.
