Man alive, my homeys in God's country spoiled me rotten the last couple days!

Had a SUPER muzzleloader hunt for deer, got to shoot some steel to 800yds with a new plinker rifle, then whacked a pig with it the next day!
To top it off, snuck in three stands yesterday AM before flying home, and went 3 for 3 with the same little rifle. Man, I live in the wrong friggin' state...

HECK YEAH!

Got something for you to show to Bridger...

My buddy sent me a text while I was deer huntin'. They were SE of Montauk, cod fishing, and had quite a little encounter. His son was cranking in a keeper cod (~15 lbs.) when a 450-500 lb. mako decided to steal their dinner off the line!

Turned out, they got a hook into the mako & managed to battle it for 30minutes...on a cod rod, no less!!! They actually fought it to the boat & released it @ boatside.

Ant sent me these three still shots from the video, said that sucker jumped right next to the boat several times!!!

That should get Bridger's heart thumping!!!

So Fred, I know nothing about Makos, not even sure if we have them here on the left coast? I mean, other than a stray, here and there. Mako's reputation as a game fish is well known, I'm wondering about how they taste, since a lot of people release them?

I think we have more Blue Sharks in coastal waters, southern California to Baja, than anything else, and they aren't very good eating. In fact, I never heard of anybody eating Blues?

Also, what do they hit, Zukkers, live bait, or what?

Good hunting. El Bee

Thanks TR!

Leonard, you've got makos galore off the Cali coast! The area from LA, south to San Diego, & out to Catalina Island is a well known for BIG makos. Alot of them are released because that is said to be a nursery area, and most of the 500+ lb'ers are usually females...

Our coastal fishing occasionally see makos that big, but most of the ones we catch are 50-350 lbs. The bigger ones simply don't come inshore, as their main prey lurks the deeper shelf waters. Big makos will eat everything from swordfish & marlin, to porpoises, tunas, and even other sharks!

We mainly fish for makos by drifting & "chumming" them into a baited offering, but they can & will hit trolled lures. Live bait works great, but I prefer to use fresh fillets to increase the odds for getting a good hook set. Its cool to see a 150 lb. mako make mincemeat of a bridled 10 lb. bluefish, but I'd rather feed it a filet and get on with the fight!!!

A hooked mako can be one heckuva riot to handle! They will run away from the boat, at the boat, INTO the boat...jump, cartwheel, pirouette, tailwalk...you name it!

You're right about blue dogs, I wouldn't eat one if someone paid me! But mako is EXCELLENT table fare. Very closely resembles swordfish in texture & flavor. We usually only kill one-2 per year, and release the rest. The are friggin' cool as heck to see cruise past the transon, that's fo' sho!!!
