There's a chart out there somewhere that's supposed to be pretty accurate up to 7 years old. After that it just says 7+. That one qualifies.

It's hard to tell by the teeth alone. Some coyotes chew and play with rocks. They toss them in the air and catch them or just chew them. The coyote wasn't that old but its teeth were badly worn.

When I was in my 20's I had a girlfriend who had a pet coyote and it did this. Also, there was a guy in Barstow that had 3 coyotes, crazy stuff. Whenever he ran errands in his pickup he'd take the coyotes along. The seats were nothing more that exposed steel and springs. One or more of his coyotes played with rocks.

Yeah, but the thing about the teeth is, they claim that they can section a front tooth and count growth rings like they do on a tree trunk. This method would have no bearing on a gritty diet or playing with rocks, if it is true that there are annual growth rings.

I used to work for a pharmaceutical company that kept goats and beagles and filled their teeth with various monomers and polymers and then fed them kibble that was heavily mixed with silicone sand.

Their purpose was to develop harder compounds, but there is no doubt that digging out gophers and rodents in general, would involve tooth wear because of the grit mixed into the fur, etc.

So, some tooth wear could be regional and maybe some others might involve genetics, stronger enamel etc.

I heard the 7+ theory from Rich that's in general as old as you can guess them without checking the cementum anulli in staining a cross section.

Edit: to add I think that's an old coyote LOL

when I lived and worked in calif. there was a crane operator that came out to our jobs from time to time he had a coyote that stayed in his truck front seat with the window down it wore a scarf as many fruit loops in calif put on their dogs it acted much like a dog though I never ventured into biting distance of it.

Yeah, and I knew a guy that kept several rattlesnakes in the bed of his pick up. Smart, no. I always thought they could get out, if they wanted?
