CHARLES C. W. COOKE June 12, 2015 12:17 PM

@CHARLESCWCOOKE Late last year, Gallup reported that the “percentage of Americans who believe having a gun in the house makes it a safer place to be (63%) has nearly doubled since 2000, when about one in three agreed with this.” Today, Rasmussen finds that the vast majority of Americans also want to live around other armed people: American Voters overwhelming prefer living in a neighborhood where they have the option of owning a gun than to live where nobody is allowed to be armed. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 22% of Likely U.S. Voters would feel safer living in a neighborhood where nobody was allowed to own a gun over one where they could have a gun for their own protection. Sixty-eight percent (68%) would feel safer in a neighborhood where guns are allowed, while 10% are not sure. The question Rasmussen asked was, ”Would you feel safer moving to a neighborhood where nobody was allowed to own a gun or a neighborhood where you could have a gun for your own protection?” From this, outfit drew the conclusion that ”Americans prefer living in neighborhoods with guns. This seems fair to me. After all, if you have the right to own a gun, everyone else does too. At the very least, though, one can take from this inquiry that the vast majority of Americans want the capacity to own a firearm for their protection, and that they would not want to move somewhere where it was prohibited. Good. Given the contribution to the collective good that my little collection is evidently making, perhaps I should get a tax break?

Two of the most important possessions a country boy must have are a good loyal dog and at least one safe full of guns, toss in a decent woman who can catch/clean fish & will work in the garden...
Having good, armed neighbors is a bonus, especially ones that will open their door & step outside when a strange noise at 3 am wakes up the neighborhood. We are all aware that the nearest cop who's worth his weight in donuts is an hour away and The meth heads have no fear of the sheeple who hide in the shadows and yell " the police have been called ", but everyone of them seems aware of the universal laungage that a pump shotgun speaks when the slide is racked.

I agree, a pump 12 gauge makes the most distinctive sound in the universe, closely followed by a 1911 being racked. Autoloaders and AR's get your attention, but not like that machinery sound of a pump, any garden variety pump.

Have you ever wondered and shook your head in the movies when the good guy finally jacks a round in his 30-30? Perhaps I'm different, but I chamber a round way before I step out the door and confront the tweeker. It's like, "damn" you just now getting around to chambering that piece? Oh well, it's the drama, right? Logic? What's that?

Good hunting. El Bee

LB, my closest neighbors moved here appx. 20 yrs ago from Iowa, they probably only owned a 22 single shot rifle back then but liked shooting it down by the pond etc., not really interested or concerned about ( for lack of better words) "Home Defense", but the Meth epidemic & thievery showed up in rural Oklahoma so things have changed. The neighbor woman is a nurse and works rotating shifts, her husband drives a truck and is in & out frequently. One day they called and asked me over to discuss their desire to purchase a dependable shotgun & handguns for self defense, they were tired of being afraid when entering and or exiting their home at all hours. Just the other night I was driving home & spotted the husband with his 870 pump out in the pasture, he saw me pulling in and called me , saying " will you help me find a good flashlight to mount on the shotty for night hunting".

I hit add reply too soon,
Maybe having a shotty in our hands really is an extension of our schlongs? I'll give credit to the anti's for that one, Reluctantly ! Anyways, the neighbor was looking for a small pack of stray dogs that were chasing his crop of new born foals at 2am , ironically my Rotts bark is what alarmed him that something was going on ( credit my stays in my yard Rott ) .

Maybe there is hope? I was just about floored by my son-in-law asking me about handguns! He's so smart, he thought he had his preferences all figured out, but his misconceptions got in the way, from the start. Not sure if I straightened him out or not? For example, locking away your piece does almost no good whatsoever. <sigh>

The "locking away your piece" State Laws are probably the largest obstacle that handicap new(ish) gun owners. The fear instilled by the anti gun media with threats of prosecution for mishandling of firearms by new gun owners have to be addressed. Although valid, scaring the shit out of law abiding citizens is something else that can be avoided (in my state) by simply taking a concealed carry class and the purchase of a gun safe or when budget constraints allows it, an additional quick opening by finger print or electric key pad safe. I'm aware that some if not most of us simply stash a loaded piece in a closet or ? .
Ironically, I have another neighbor who wears a badge, a more incompetent, complete ASSHOLE would require a Task Force the size of the one in New York State who are looking for the 2 escaped, convicted murderers. These days defending yourself, your family and your belongings requires more than pushing the 911 buttons on your phone.
