No! Easier to just go to store get chicken liver or some good catfish bait. most any liver or meat will work but you have to deal with the turtles as well.

river fishing with current you want a bait that stays on hook. no current or very little then a dough bait for catfish works well. if you have frogs that's another, go to bait. big night crawlers, put 2-3 on big hook..

I'm thinking, (1) It might work well, (2) It's free, and last but not least, (3) It would be part of an answer to a comment I've gotten a couple of times, "You shouldn't kill it if you're not going to eat it."
Responding with, 'I skin them, sell the fur and use the liver to catch catfish and eat them' might set them back a bit more than my usual reply of 'You shouldn't eat it if you didn't kill it yourself'.

Gee, ko ko yank chain? Or would TA yank chain? Hard to imagine?

But what jiggled my response mechanism is that full of shit admonition:

Only OK to kill one of God's creatures if you intend to eat it.

Who the fuck decided that? And why should I care about somebody's rules to live by? I don't believe in smoking; but should that be the standard by which all citizens will abide? Who made that rule about, it's only okay to kill an animal if you intend to eat it?

Near as I can determine, that isn't one of the TEN COMMANDMENTS? Sounds like something some Liberal would come up with? You know, the folks that want to make everything MANDATORY! Liberals are such miserable Twats!

I have listened to sanctimonious Liberals claim the high ground since I was a little fart: It's only permissible to kill in order to eat! And yet I have seen local authorities poison a lake to kill unwanted trash fish. That's different, apparently?

There are people, if they had their way, would not allow deer hunting! The reason is because they are gentle and innocent creatures. But it's OK to kill a rabid dog, especially if it is a Pit Bull and never a Golden Retriever or a Poodle!

That's enough rant on the subject for now....unless someone has a contrary opinion?

Good hunting. El Bee

I think that that mind-set probably originated with the great grandparents back in the Depression. If they gave a young'in three shells, said young'in had best come home with three critters for the pot. Nothing went to waste.
The liberals, most of whom would starve in a field of sweetcorn and cottontails, just latched onto the concept and made it a 'cause'. Much like contest coyote hunts or trophy deer hunting.

Interesting sidenote; The state of Washington 'euthanizes' thousands of Canada Geese every year when they're molting and easy to catch because they crap green goo on people's docks around the lakes.
BUT ............. Woe be unto the poor s.o.b. that takes one of these noble gamebirds over the limit or doesn't have The Stamp or forgets to put the plug back into his shotgun or even, Gawd help us uses lead shot.

Yeah, I guess you pretty much nailed it. What's it called, people that tell other people what to do? Whatever it is, it's insufferable. Or, as our Vice Presidential candidate once said: "Mind your own damned business!"

Take Liberals, for instance. They are so annoying! I can't think of a redeeming quality, off hand?

Yep thats how fucked up western states are.
Here we have a early goose season and a late goose season its purpose is to thin out the local geese that don't migrate south. and also a unlimited snow goose hunt.

It's sorta interesting, how patterns get out of whack. For instance, I mentioned recently that I always have a small percentage of hummers that stay through the winter and depend on feeders because there aren't a lot of flowers blooming in the winter. It's the same thing with a certain percentage of Mourning Dove. Sure, there are millions that fly south for the winter but there are a percentage that winter in southern California, never migrate.

I also know of a state park in Huntington Beach that has at least hundreds of Canada geese that live there all year round, along with an equal number of Mallards. And, they are breeding contentedly....apparently? But don't take my word for it, check it out for yourself, next time you are in town.

Well the problem here was the central flyway (Mississippi) flight patterns of ducks and geese changed as well as a reduction in numbers. Lead poisoning at bird refuge ect. So young geese were brought in and released in varus parts of the state (hunters giving back to wildlife) and thus the geese didn't know enough to fly south for winter, so they group up around power plants where water stays warm and plenty of crop residue around to feed from. Geese get smart over time they know where they safe during hunting season so now we have a increase of geese, good as far as hunting goes but local birds can be difficult at times to get.

Speaking of hunters giving back to wildlife we now have a statewide turkey season, and Elk season. More eagles than I have ever seen in my early years and now have nesting pairs of swans as well as whooping cranes and also have Vultures now around rock quarries. Too bad hunters in other states didn't feel same way about wildlife, most just want to kill there share and leave it up to DNR to fix the shortages.

Forgot to mention this a couple days ago.

But, why would anyone go to the trouble to use coyote liver as bait: FOR CATFISH? When store bought chicken liver is readably available, and has been working for years; and why fix what is not broke?

You got's some 'splain' to do, Mister ko ko! You are a good old boy, but really, Man.
No big deal, I know.
But where do you come up with off the wall stuff? (almost wrote, "shit")

As I said, it's not a very big deal, but why coyote liver? Were you right in the middle of a necropsy and had a couple of left over parts? Or what?

Ah yes, ........ The 'Why' ???

Why hunt when the grocery store is full of reasonably healthy meat ??

Why tie your own flies when Cabela's carries really nice ones ??

Why do I hunt with a recurve bow when a compound or a crossbow is far more accurate ??

Why anything ??

Answer; .............. Just because.

There you have it, Peanut Gallery!

Words to live by from The Dispenser of Sage Advice!

(don't get a swelled head, Amigo)

But, I sorta understand recurve vs compound.

I myself act somewhat like a craftsman, sometimes preferring a file to a power tool. But, the ruling class usually make a big deal out of handcrafted, something they can take possession of with an exchange of money. And then, that's what it is, they own something handcrafted, without a clue what it's for or how best to use it. They admire something of quality, "hand made" then display it and brag that they own it.

So, think of a five thousand dollar hand crafted Model 1911 tricked out with all the latest and greatest improvements and refinements. Far too valuable to ever use, these people take great store in the pathetic, (and, also sad) term: "never fired".

Yes .............. My response to 'never fired' would be, "Well what's the critter good for, then ????"

I'm a fan of Frank Frazetta's artwork. There are people who would and have paid 1.5 million $$$ for one of his originals that they then store in a climate controlled vault. I pay $20 for a print and display it in my weight-pit.

There's a lot of things that I'd like to do. Ideas in the Backwoodsman magazine or the FoxFire series of books but will never have time for.
But ......... If I could call in a coyote and take it with Traditional archery equipment, do something craft-wise with the hide, and then use the liver to catch a meal of catfish, in my mind, that would be pretty cool and worthy of a bottle of homebrew Mead.

PS The Dodger's could close out them/those overly proud Yankees tonight!

This made big news just a few days ago. Fernando died very recently, like over the weekend, and he wasn't very old at all, maybe about 60, if that?

But, you might not be aware that Venezuela was always with the Dodgers as the Spanish language radio broadcast announcer.

I'll look it up for you.
