(Not about falling down)

Been deer hunting since middle of Sept and finished up October 30.
Never seen one mule deer buck in all that time.
Hunted 2 different units. In all that time might have seen 30 does and fawns.
Other half hiked up a steep rocky hillside into a roadless/trail-less area.
He seen 7 deer. One was a small 2 point and was able to get a shot through a small window in the thick down lodge pole,.

I know we had a good year for feed and water everywhere. The fall was really mild so the deer didn't have to migrate out of the high country. They finally started migrating about a week ago right as the seasons ended.

Very weird year. And it's just not this area its like the whole state.
Hope the elk hunting is better. Not a lot of elk killed during the general hunt either.

Don't think that is all of the problem.
Think we had more winter kill than F/G will admit.
Bet we're closer to 40% kill.
Too long hunting seasons too many predators it just goes on and on.
The trappers up here are getting the job done on wolves with trapping and all the others out hunting them.
Not many kill the cougars though.

So, I'm only a bit puzzled, what do y'all call the big cat? I always considered "Cougar" to be a bit melodramatic, something said by people who ain't never seen one. And, "Mountain Lion" is too wordy.

We have always said LION, simple and understandable. In Africa, they all know what "Simba" means, a much different animal and the only cat that maintains a pack. All other cats, big and small and solitary animals. I have seen 3 bobcats together, twice and managed to kill all three. I happened-stumbled on 4 bobcat together on the side of a hill and managed to kill one, it was at night, but the rest disappeared real quick. I've never seen lions together, I understand that a single male usually has a territory to includes 3, maybe 4 females. But since I usually hunt desert, any cat I see is probably a Tom moving between areas. So, I have seen more lions in the flats than in the mountains and the trees. I avoid mule deer terrain, for the most part, and that's where you are likely to see a lion, statically, any way. Arizona is kind of an exception, you just never know? Same reason, I seldom hunt elk areas so I have no idea if lions target elk, habitually. I suppose it happens, but I don't have much to go on. Anyway, in most cases, most people I talk to, they just say "Lion". Any other name is uncommon, in my experience. Never hear Catamount, painter or panther, or cougar except in movies.

So, who thinks I'm full of it? Maybe I am?

Good hunting. El Bee

I once made a comment at a Trapping Convention that I've called in a total of three lions.
Had an old timer correct me when he said that 'You've called in three lions that you KNOW Of."
Sobering thought.

That could be said about any critter you care to name. I called in 40 mustangs....that I know of? And, I mean at the same time. I've called in 12 mule deer, same thing. Numerous Mexicans. But, of the lions I have called, they were all single. When I think about 3 or 4 bobcat, more or less together, I think they were probably a mother and grown cubs. Male bobcat are severely anti social, so it would be rare to kill more than one Tom, same place, same stand. I killed 3 cats in a juniper-type once, almost had to climb to get one, since his claws hooked-snagged in branches while the other two released and crashed. I also killed the mom, while dragging the others, and she was sorta hiding behind a tree, but the cubs were big, more than 20 pounds.

It's just a thing. If you say lion someone will always think Africa.
Say cougar most in the intermountain region know what you are talking about.
It's all a regional thing on what one thing is called over another region.
Around here it's all deer area and the lions hang around hard. Had one female with 3 good sized kittens in tow one winter.

Lions don't bother a full grown elk much, deer is another thing.
Wolves like elk and will kill deer just as much. Found a nice buck they killed last year. Went back and got the horns after done trapping the area.

Being older than dirt, I occasionally misspeak and I did yesterday. I realized it in bed, the middle of the night and here's my correction. (don't know why I said 3 bobcat in a fucking tree, but the fact is, there were two cats in the tree, when I shot the female peeking from behind the tree, that made a total of THREE. Now where this becomes important is that now it's dark and raining and I lost directions. I'm dragging three bobcat and a rifle, (my trusty 6mm) and actually, I'm fucking lost!

I this was a whatever they are called, I'm thinking Juniper but they were all the same and I had no direction on that flat topped plateau. So, I stopped wandering around and stayed in one direction until I hit a barbwire fence and then which way? For some reason, I followed that fence to the right and a half a mile later, I got to the road and there was my truck, another half mile to the right, down, I mean UP the road! All of this took at least a couple hours and was I ever glad to find my way out of that Maze! I usually have a pretty fair sense of direction, but not that time!

PS Nice cats.

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: Yes, I understand the connection between Africa, and lion. But for me; if I say: "what in the world?"

Nobody is going to say, wait a minute, what world? Do you mean Jupiter or Mars, or good old mother earth?

So, African lions are so far removed from most people's conscienceness(sp) and it's exotic and most people are somewhat aware of long tails so in my group, we just say "lion" and that's enough of a clue as to what we are talking about. It's kind of Insider lingo.

PPS another thing is that less than 1% of the population has ever set eyes on a lion, unless it's on TV.

I got escorted to the main gate once at Lion Country Safari by the guys in those Zebra striped Jeeps for blowing a Weems Dual Tone and calling in African Lions in the lion enclosure from the safety of my van. Those guys were really pissed and told me to hit the freeway and keep going. But hey, how many people can claim they've called in an African Lion ????

Is that place even still open ???? They took a lot of heat when 'Bubbles' the hippo escaped and went on a rampage that ended poorly for the beloved gentle hippo.

ko ko, you know, Jay Nistetter has a similar story about blowing a call in/at the Phoenix Zoo, and with the same result. He got kicked out!

A couple of sick fuckers! And, members of the Huntmaster's Peanut Gallery! Aught to be ashamed!

Now, go to your room!

Actually, I sort of do the same thing. Like when driving, and pulling up next to me at a signal is a big dog with his head out the window and tongue hanging out. So, I lip squeak him, and do I ever get that predator instinct look! What can I say, Boys will be Boys!

[Eek!] Worse calling story ...... EVER. [Eek!]

Long long ago in a Galaxy far far away known as the San Fernando Valley, I would occasionally stop at a sporting goods store on the way to work. The owner told me that he had a new calling tape; Distressed Chicken.
Had to have it.
On the way to work, had to hear it.
Into the truck's cassette player; Squawk squawk squawk SQUAWK.
Low rider pulls up next to me at a red light. I turned the volume up and one of the Vatos heard it.
Only one thing to do; I'm probably going to Hell for this but I rocked back and forth and smiled at them all the time with a chicken going Squawk squawk SQUAWK.
To this day, I have no doubt there are four Zoot Suits that will SWEAR on a case of Coronas there
was a red-neck in a pick-up truck humping a chicken on the corner of Woodly & Rosco.

For the record; I was crazy then ........ I'm better now. [Cool]

Few years back I got invited to go into a big barn where the puppy pen kept extra coyotes, over 200 of them. [Eek!] I thought about doing a lip squeek then a light came on and said to myself I better not fuck with them. [Big Grin]

Yeah.
My 43+ year old kids still tell that story.
First thing they told Mom when they got home was "Dad got us kicked out of the zoo!"
Said nary a word about all the animals they saw or the 20 people with kids following us.
Did you know that elephants get all jacked when they hear a varmint call?

Additionally, it takes about 12 minutes to call in security just like a coyote 'cept they drive gas powered golf carts.

I'm sure Jay forgot he blabbed about his indiscretion right here on Huntmasters, and maybe I wouldn't remember?

He doesn't sound very contrite, even now?

But, there could have been caused a stampede, Bucko!

Another story. Happened at the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park. Several ethnic kids, not sure which variety?

They did SOMETHING, and at least one of the tigers got so pissed off that he managed to jump over the moat and actually chased one of the kids into some sort of souvenir store, as I remember it?

I will try a search and see if I can find it.

Okay, I got a few details wrong, SF not LA, but one kid was killed and two others were mauled.

https://www.latimes.com/news/la-me-tiger27dec27-story.html

I read this story and it's completely sanitized. The three kids were teasing the cat, and it knew how to get out and hunted all three of them down, killing one. They all tried to run in different directions but she caught all of them. Considering how many people were around, the cat was able to identify and catch all three.

here's another
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Zoo_tiger_attacks

edit: apparently they had previously harassed lions. Also, they had brought with them to tease the tiger, sticks and pinecones. Also, they were probably inside the enclosure or standing on a wall and chucking objects at the tiger that was killed guarding one of the victims then she charged 4 LA cops who let loose and mowed her down. The kids family were very hostile, sued and only paid $900,000 for the death so although they didn't admit anything, they must have known that their kids were guilty, so happily, they didn't get a 50 million dollar windfall, which might have been indicated if the kid was an innocent victim.

Personally, I would have paid not a cent more than $90,000, but thta's just me?

Got to admit Leonard, I don't remember telling you that story and wondered where the hell you heard it. Haven't been to the zoo in over 35 years. Kids were always getting me in hot water.

Thats the thing with many animals they don't forget if they was fucked in a bad way and will try to get even. Also one of the reason a dog has to be put down if it attacks or bites a human. May not have been animals fault but it did a no no and will do it again if it gets pissed off.

Well, yeah. But you are talking about German Shepards and Rottweilers, potentially dangerous breeds.

My parents had a high strung male poodle that kept nipping and biting grandkids, years ago. My mother would always blame the little kids for provoking him, always making excuses for that fucking dog. He was a miniature, the midsize between Standard and Toy. Not a huge dog but he wasn't little either, maybe about 15" at the shoulder when 12" is the divide. The thing is, he was a valuable breeder, and maybe that was the problem, a high strung stud, like ko ko.

So, there should be no tolerating a fucking dog that bites. I don't understand why anybody puts up with it? Like why are Biden's dogs always biting his Secret Service Agents? I understand that the actual number of Agents bitten by (I think?) 3 different German Shepards that the Bidens own or did at one time, and this is only covering the last 2 1/2 years or so. But the bite events we know of are somewhere around 12 or so? And that's just Secret Service, who knows about other Whitehouse staff?

I don't know? Maybe you can give them one freebee, but after that something serious and final needs to be done.

Good hunting. El Bee
