So my 11 year old daughter (last of the 6), Esther and I went out adventuring Saturday. I taught her how to drive on the Sandhill trails in case there is ever an emergency and I can't. She had a bunch of fun. We were hunting for a pet tortoise but only caught several lizards. I taught her how to shoot a .22 pistol also. She found her first complete arrowhead while adventuring, too!!
I couldn't find any kind of call in my truck but I took her to a really great spot to call in a coyote. We had no weapon, were wearing bright colors, and we sat in front of a couple of yuccas, just over the top of a hill. I put my hands up to my mouth and began a series of crying "whaaaaa, waaaas" and then a couple of "(quivering) waaaaa, waaaaas" and in came a coyote. It hung up about 80 yards out right in frot of us. It stared at us for 3 minutes, then dropped back behind the hill it had come up over. It reappeared over the same hill but downwind and only stayed for 5-10 seconds before lifting it's nose in the air then switching ends and it was gone. She got the whole thing on video using my phone.
It was a great day of "firsts" with my youngest critter!! [ May 30, 2022, 05:43 PM: Message edited by: Locohead ]

Yeah, and thanks for educating another coyote! (just kidding) I know, for seed, fur sure!
Oh well, I'm getting soft too. I braked and honked at a squirrel crossing to the park this morning. He swapped ends and went back the way he came. I scared the shit out of him so next time, (he promised) he will look both ways!
Good hunting. El Bee

I saw a couple of coyotes off the highway once, many years ago, and I pulled over and called them in using my voice. I usually have a call somewhere in the truck but couldn't find one.
I was surprised that coyote blasted in. Perhaps, I sounded like SOME kind of distressed critter...but probably I just called in a very curious coyote. [ June 08, 2022, 08:19 PM: Message edited by: Locohead ]
