A couple articles in the gun mags about 100 years anniversary of the 270Winchester cartridge. I must confess, there is a warm fuzzy feeling when I think about my first centerfire rifle. It is a timeless pedigree. These days when the word “Creedmore” is just offensive to our ears, to talk about the best western deer cartridge.

And that’s the problem. WE have far too many recent cartridges that advance nothing. Do we need a 22 ARC? Wow, it’s almost as good as a 22-250. So why do we have Grendel's and so many cartridges that don’t do anything extra or special or what we never had before. Anybody can chamber a fast twist barrel so they can stabilize god awful long bullets for shooting at distances that nobody should be doing, unless it’s steel targets.

And, I’m coming up empty on all of these wonderful new cartridges that we never needed before, since there is, (indeed) nothing new under the sun. Some years ago, not that many, when I think about it, I almost bought a 240 Page Pooper. Developed by a rather famous gun writer, Warren Page. It was just as practical as a 243 or 6mm or even the 244Remington which was guilty of having a too slow barrel twist to stabilize 100 grain bullets. So, I walked out of there with a 22-243Middlested, which nobody ever heard of. That’s okay because it is a jim dandy deer and coyote cartridge. Yes, nobody will ever buy it unless they are a fairly competent handloader; which I am. And, who cares? It came with an extra Shilen barrel chambered in 22-250Ackley Improved, which a few people have heard of. Anyway, it might be an obscure caliber, but I don’t care. It works fine and I hope somebody finds a use for it when I’m gone.

So anyway, I admit, I’m cranky. Petty little shit seems to piss me off, the older I get. I haven’t screamed: “Get off my lawn” yet. And I am still throwing back all the various tennis balls and nerf balls, and baseballs that manage to get over the fence. I’m not used to kids in the neighborhood. Like mine, they have grown up and gone their own way years ago. This is a mature neighborhood so when a young family moves in next door, it’s just a minor culture shock. They are the fourth family in that house, 50 years I’ve seen them come and go. Frankly, I don’t see how they can afford it, but then he told me that he owns three franchises, so that explains it, besides getting a boost from his father in law. And, the kids are home schooled. Starting to see that, a little bit. Also, he had a Trump yard sign. He hunts a bit too, although I haven’t asked too many questions. My main complaint is that he sometimes leaves his trash cans out overnight. Oh, and he has a Queen palm that overhangs my yard. Could be worse. Paula, the previous resident used to complain about Pinky being loud. Fuck her! He’s a happy bird! That’s his favorite talking: HAPPY BIRD! all day long! Paula was a bitch, moved to Florida. I always wanted to tell her to have that mole on her nose removed! Just thankful she’s gone.

Where was I in this ramble? I’m dazed and confused! I just came in for a cold soda, (that’s a POP for y’all from minnesota. Easy shit, just pruning bushes but it’s a hot day and I forgot a hat. Breaks over, back to work! Should have something to eat first. I’ll think about it? Maybe a ham sammish? I better do it. My routine sucks. Never take naps. But I don’t sleep properly. I’ll wake up at 1am, read for 3 hours. then sleep for 3 more. That’s just an example, sometimes it’s 2 1/2 hours, other times it’s 3 1/2. But never sleep all night anyway, gotta get up and pee at least twice. But, senility doesn’t run in my family. I might be the exception, you never know? But every time I think about Biden, and that asshole, light’s out, nobody’s home. Somebody needs to be held accountable. Could Doctor Jill be responsible for that much deceit? Seems more likely that it was a team effort. Either way, we need to find out who was running the show, calling the shots, etc. And, he thought he was up for 4 more years. More likely, dies in office and we get Kamala; just chew on that concept for a minute.

Ramble over, rant over, sorry!
Good hunting. El Bee

Watching the mostly peaceful riots in Calif. [Eek!]
Lemme get this straight ...... They are protesting against law enforcement arresting people who are breaking the law ????? [Confused]
Good crowd shot on the tube. Probably from a helicopter. Strange that not a single red hat is to be seen. [Razz]

El Bee; You're in a Mediterranean climate. Over here, it's Sonoran Desert. The 65/95 routine works out pretty well. Get up at 4:a.m. and have breakfast or hit the gym out in the shop. Daylight at about 5:a.m. and it's about 65*. Time to start yardwork / landscaping projects or head over to my archery range. By about 10:a.m. it's pushing 95* and time to head inside for a shower, lunch & a nap. Afternoon, it's 104* outside right now, time to do indoor projects, clean the aquarium and prepare for the evening BBQ and a Fireball Martini.
Life ain't perfect but it's pretty fukin' good !!!

Factoid; Re ...... L.A. riots.
25% of the Democrats rioting are on medication for emotional issues. [Eek!]
That means that 75% of Democrats out there are untreated !!! [Big Grin]

BWAAAAAHAAAAAAAHAAAAAA !!!!!!

And one more thing; I've worked with two different gentlemen who 'did it right' to become Naturalized Citizens. One from Lebanon and one from Mexico. They jumped thru a lot of hoops, put up with bureaucracy's that would drive most of us mad. Then, they passed a test that I would wager $$ most high school grads could not pass. It was an honor to shake their hands and welcome them to America.
Then there are all of these losers that cut in line and demand respect and special treatment. Fuk 'em.

I agree! Fuck first class airplane tickets to country of origin, put them on a prison bus in handcuffs. Some Democrat was whining that we won’t have anybody to pick the crops! Yeah, that’s a tough one….So, we go without strawberries, suck it up Amigo!

And, they all have a driver’s license! You know why? I was stopped once along the I-10. There was also someone else pulled over, CHP just had a brief exchange and the car took off. Of course, I asked what that was about? He said, we don’t bother writing tickets for illegals, they ignore them. Then he said that they were lobbying in Sacramento to at least give these guys a driver’s license so we could write a righteous ticket. And so they did and they signed them up for VOTER REGISTRATION through the DMV at the same time. Buurocracy is awesome! That sure solved a short sighted law enforcement problem!

Well as far as new rifle cartridges go some of them designed so they can be fired in a AR, not everyone wants a 223 AR.. Next reason for them is to shoot heavier bullets, I guess the med weight bullets not good enough for mag. dumping on wild hogs thus need for a heavy bullet cartridge that works in a AR platform. Next reason I guess is a cartridge that burns less powder to do same job or close to it.
Also add some cartridges tend to be over all more accurate no matter what weight bullet you shoot. I also believe that the 6.5 cal. bullet tends to be most accurate bullet at longer ranges like 3-4-5-and 600 yards. Guess it also boils down to having to dial in fewer clicks when making adjustments.
I been wanting to do another rifle build one last time and looked at all the new stuff out there but can't find anything that gets me excited or any better than what i already have. I don't need or want a cartridge shooting 100 gr, bullets just to kill coyotes or should i say over kill.

Some of that above sounds like my attitude. Except, I question that some particular case shame is inheirently more accurate. Also, some caliber is magically more accurate than some others. Never mind that every single accuracy record in benchrest is held by 22 or 24 caliber. Except on some distances, a 7mm seems to rule.

Now answer me this. why has nobody explored 29 caliber? This could be the Holy Grail, you could be famous!

And, a case with a long neck is conducive to fine accuracy. Except that 300WinMag holds some accuracy recognition, inspite of having the shortest neck of any other 30 caliber. Bottom line is, I have no idea why certain conformation is deemed superior accuracy? As I understand, the 220Russian is a necked down AK47 30 caliber case. So why fight what works.

Is it the external shape or the internal dimensions that gives a certain cartridge a reputation for superior accuracy? Is it the angle of the shoulder, maybe? I think a shoulder angle of at least 30 degrees extends case life, if one likes to reload cases.

This is all what they call “EMPERICAL” in nature.

Whatever happened to that rifling that started off slow and got faster down the barrel ???
I thought that was the hot ticket there for a while.
Less vibration & trauma to the bullet and all of that. [Confused]

I think it has something to do with case size that tends to inherit better accuracy.

22 ppc, 6mm ppc, 22 br. and 6mm br. and that Russian case you mentioned comes close as well.

6.5 Lapua and 308 come to mind as well, guess depends on how far they plan to shoot.

39. cal. bullet?? In bullet making it boils down to if they can make a bullet with little trouble and if there be any gain to it over whats there.
For some reason 17 cal. bullets was hard to make in varis weights thus a small following. The bullet can be made but is it going to shoot well or is it just going to fly all over the place or even come apart in flight. Burger had that issue with the 37 gr. b-t bullet and then the 55 gr. 204 bullet. When both of those bullets would work like they was suppose to you wouldn't have a need for any other coyote bullet, the BC was unreal along with accuracy and vel.
A 30 gr. burger in 17 cal. hits a coyote like it was hit by a hammer of Thor. The 55 gr. in 204 was also unreal and really something out to 800 yards.

Most my stands in South Dakota the 22-250 ackly stayed in back seat and I shot the 17 pred. instead, it hated coyotes.

The case with shortest neck and trophies to prove itself was the Warewolf and wolfpup developed by my gun smith Stan Ware, was designed for target comp. only.

Koko that ideal took a back seat to the opposite rifle twist which had some merit but not enough followers. reversing rifle twist had something to do with the earth's rotation or gravitational pull. less bullet spin in one direction or something like that.

Yeah, ..... The Coriolis Effect. Fades to the right, Northern Hemisphere. I take that into consideration when fletching my arrows and use left wing.

And another thing ............. Whatever happened to those Sabots things where I could shoot a .22 bullet out of a 30-30 round ???? The effect on jackrabbits was dramatic. [Eek!]

Been awhile since I seen add for that but think they still make them. I dont have a 3030 though. [Frown]

Savage had a better conversion for their lever action. consisted of a fake brass case that you inserted a smaller cartridge into and then chambered it. My gunsmith had one of those that came with all the cool things for it, like lyman peep sight and shell conversion. gun was worth alot of money.

Too much Ivory Tower reasoning here, for me. For 99.999% of shooting for any purpose imaginable. There are major laws of physics and then there are some considerations that just muddy the waters. Especially as it relates to an arrow in flight, I’d stick to the basics, and leave some input for the dreamers out there.

With enough effort, I could probably make a 30-30 perform with the most sophisticated design we have. It would require extra something, here and there, but somebody could get cutting edge performance out of an obsolete design by doing something radical. What that might be, I can’t say. But give it some thought. At one time, manned flight was thought to be impossible. Like that/

Back on line ........... 'puter boo-boo.
The Sabots were / are made in a few calibers. 30-06 and, I believe .270.

The cartridge adapters were / are made in a bunch of calibers. I have one that's .223 and shoots a .22 long rifle bullet. It makes my Savage M 24 even more versatile. .22 long rifle, .223, 12 gauge shot, buck or slug all in one big ugly clunky gun, Handy for cold-calling, though.

When they went to those Nerf Tip 30-30 bullets that could be loaded into a tubular magazine without setting off the primer of the one in front of it the aerodynamics got a whole lot more better.

No doubt still room for improvement; Mayhap the 30-30 Bosinski Improved ???? [Cool]

I agree with all that. As a courtesy for new club members, I agreed to take out a newbie for a weekend of coyote hunting in Nevada. This dude had a Savage M24. He had a couple shots offered at night and muffed them both. The next day, we were resting at a well known abandoned site along US95, for get the name right now? Anyway, a combination of the capability of the M24 and the owners lack of ability, I just requested that he take a couple. shots at the side of the concrete building with an aiming point. This guy fired 3 shots and had to measured with an axe handle, well over 3 feet….no fucking wonder he missed 2 chip shots last night?

It wasn’t very noble of me, but I did it anyway; I fired 3 shots at that same aiming point and the result was around 8” or so, as I recall? Almost minute of coyote. I suggested that for the rest of our hunt, maybe he should hide behind a bush and brain any incoming coyote by swinging the barrel and braining any incoming coyote with the buttstock. Mr tact, I am not.

The fella wasn’t suited to the endurance and commitment involved in almost any type of coyote hunting, much less a hard charging weekend without any decent sleep. I don’t recall ever seeing him at another meeting?

I am almost a total failure in introducing new prospects to the sport. If they don’t exhibit the fever right off the bat, it’s going to be a failure. Including my brother, come to think of it. But not, (thankfully) including my son and two grandsons.

Yeah we all heard about it. Sounds like a real psychopath. Even took the trouble with a disguise. It’s Minnesota, you never know?

That’s kinda like that one in Kentucky a couple weeks ago where the county sheriff shot his friend, the county judge, in his chambers. Luckily, it was all on tape, the guy might as well just plead insanity. That way he might serve 10 years and let go as cured.

.............. or just burn his birth certificate and claim he's an illegal. A plane ticket & $1000.

Went to the local 'No Kings' event today. 23 people were there. 24 if you count the guy on the outskirts wearing a red Trump 2028 hat [Big Grin] Got some dirty looks but nobody challenged me. I kinda wanted to point out that we already had a protest back in Nov. when we rejected the Democratic Socialist's anti-American agenda and voted Trump back in, but apparently nobody wanted to talk to me.
Mostly young college age twits that you would not be happy to have a son or daughter bring home to meet the family. They got 'some' support from cars going by, honking & such. Not so much from the pick-up trucks. Safford is a college town so I guess it's to be expected but still sad to see.

Happy Birthday President Trump !!!!! Long live the King !!!! [Razz]
