I’m an old foggy and minor traditionalist. The trend towards “Accuracy International” type of stock configurations leaves me unimpressed, from a hunting standpoint. Walking around in the woods with a RAYGUN, or an AR15 type of rifle looks a bit silly, to this kid. Of course, that radical offset grip cannot be done in AAA Walnut. Not that I would carry it or afford it anyway.
Let’s talk suppressors, for just a minute. I’m already embarrassed to show up at the range with a rifle without a “can”. But, it’s one of those status symbols, look at me, I can afford a $1200 silencer, and pony’ed up the two hundred dollar entrance fee to to Gov’ment. Wow, it only sounds like 130db! Not 160db, like my 300, if I actually fire it after a full day of tramping in the woods.
Anyway, my hearing was ruined by the time I got out of the army. Yes, I’ve been blessed with constant ringing in my ears for 60 years or so. I should spend $1400 to bop with the cool kids? I’m not sure how it works, but a couple more shots UNPROTECTED won’t matter all that much. I never really appreciated fine classical Bach and Mozart anyway, ko ko’s ZZ Top is more my speed….after a beer or two.
Now, how about Clocks? I appreciate a fine piece of plastic as much as the next dude, but really, can a man appreciate that technology alongside some version of the timeless 1911 by John Moses Browning? There are apparently lots of dudes that will pay $5,000 for a tricked out Nighthawk. I haven’t seen any finely engraved Glocks just lately. I have noticed that perhaps a majority of police officers have never fired anything but their issued 9mm. These guys are not gun nuts, for sure. At least, your average law enforcement officer these days. They ain’t into guns, most of them. They say that a striker fired Glock is as reliable as a sunrise. About like an eggbeater, it just works! Well, I can’t warm up to a Glock like V, if memory serves, he’s packing a Glock 43 these days.
And, by the way, I’m still breaking in my IWB holster for my Hellcat. It’s so damned tight, the slide unlocks out of battery 3/8ths of an inch, when holstering my gun. Needs more break-in, and believe me, I am working on it! Every night, I pick it up and work with it before bed. So far, it’s incremental. It’s quite a tug to pull it out of the holster. I’ve got work to do. This is a tight fit!
Now, what about all the new, bewildering array of new cartridges? I can’t keep up, ARC, PRC and much more. And all predicated on a fast twist barrel, because everybody wants to kill their buck at 800 yards with a long ass bullet. This trend, or vogue is getting to be silly. Now, if you don’t crank up your elevation just before your sniper shot, well, you ain’t getting your money’s worth out of your lovely custom rig! After passing up on three different opportunities because they were inside 400 yards and almost unworthy of your finely tuned 1000 yard, $6,000 custom rifle.
I think most of this breathtaking new cartridges development is planned obsolescence. Throw away your rifles with a one in ten or 12 twist rate and sign up for a CREEDMORE or a PRC or another caliber of the week. It all boils down to copper bullets instead of the poisonous lead, which your mother taught you not to eat a long time ago. If it didn’t kill you, it made your brain stupid or something? No sir! We need to switch to copper if for no other reason but to save the condors! Spare no expense, we must save these magnificent masters of the sky. So, should we also kill the noble Bald Eagle because they have a habit of killing every condor that they notice in their area? That’s kind of against the law, so let’s hold off on Nature’s methods of survival of the fittest. So, why are we exporting excess condors to Arizona and Mexico because we have more than we can handle. This is complicated, conservation means choosing sides. Sometimes.
I’ve run out of shit to bitch about so to wrap it up, just don’t piss me off!
Good hunting. El Bee

I think its just marketing catch, a way to keep selling stuff. I mean how many 22-250 do we need? yeah all that tactical shit used when out calling don't care for it myself plus a lot of weight to be dragging around. As for long range yeah i like to do it once in a while and have the gun to do it, makes it more fun.
As for pistols I don't care what a guy carries if that's what he wants. I'm happy with my Berretta and ruger and even my AMT auto mag. and i don't plan to be in any shoot outs that last for days. I think sometimes a good knife do job just as well and they won't see it coming if you play your cards right. Just site of blood will drop many to their knees or send running.

You left out the most important part; You MUST spend about $12,000 on a side by side for your girlfriend to drive while you ride shotgun, spending long days road hunting the two tracks so that you can put your latest wiz-bang toys to use. (Archery as well as rifle)

Hey Koko i resent that!
I have two side by sides and a ATV plus my mini truck, just makes it easier to get around and hide them verses the truck.

And if you're using them to get to a hunting spot, that's all sunshine & lollipops.
What I see them used for is an endless parade of roadhunting during the deer season and often used to get around closed gates into areas where they don't belong.
Makes us all look bad. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

Well, I have been there, humping the high Sierra’s and near as I can tell, road hunters manage to kill deer. You know how in some management areas after a few days, you do manage to see a few, systematically working all the backroads. These guys harvest deer just like those of us that are sneaking up on big bucks three ridges over. If it didn’t work, they wouldn’t be doing it. We bumped in to a guy that made an effort to catch up or intersect us in the piny woods right after a heavy snow. He was selling his home made hunting knives. I guess he had all the answers to all the excuses people would come up with? But he said, pay me when you get back home, nobody has ever stiffed me yet. His knives were not the most artfully crafted I have ever seen, I wouldn’t say crude, but utilitarian; with a bit of hand crafted charm. Why mention this, I don’t know? But while the bucks were moving and hunters were scoring, he was trying to make a buck or two. He didn’t sell to any of our group but he said that he was giving away a lot of knives. Of course, I would guess that there wasn’t a single hunter in those woods that didn’t have a hunting knife on him. But like an old Indian proverb says: a man can’t have too many knives. Well, what you got? I’d guess I have probably close to maybe 20, myself? Some store bought, some custom made, and a few vintage. It’s really hard picking one to strap on.
Anyways, Good hunting. El Bee
