IN A JAM?
Yeah, once in a while. And, I know there are guys that hunt alone, but I ain’t one of them. I like having a partner along to share the problems that eventually pop up; and they will, sure as hell!
Anyway, here is one hunter’s ordeal.

Amazing story Leonard. I have spent many years out in the Great Basin hunting alone miles from nowhere and the thought of never making it back never occurred to me. I always liked being by myself out there in no mans land. I have had my right knee go out on me and had to use the rifle as a crutch to make it back to the rig but that absolutely pales in comparison to what he went through. They say God looks after drunks and fools and I am sure I qualify. Having to walk out many miles to a ranch is nothing when the rig goes south on you. I told the wife if I didn't make it home when I was supposed to don't panic for another day and then get concerned. But when you tell her you will be in one place and end up literally miles and miles away from there she wouldn't be much help anyways. "He's out there somewhere." Maybe we should all count our blessings.

I’ve had to walk out a few times, nothing really serious or life threatening. But staying with the vehicle is sometimes unwise. I remember in Arizona once, in the high country up north, we climbed a gravel road into some remote area, during daytime. I forget if it was melted snow or ice, but that night everything froze and that road was for all practical purposes, impassable. But we had to do it and damned near lost the rig 8 or ten times. You know when fat tires are no help on glass like ice and we didn’t have chains. One time, we just slid down hill with a drop off on one side and a cliff on the other, brakes locked up and with any kind of luck we could have gone over on the left and crashed against a wall on the other. A black ice situation on a dirt road, 30 miles from a little berg named Young. The smart thing was to wait for daylight and maybe sunshine would melt it if it warmed up but we were thinking; maybe it won’t thaw ‘til spring? Anyway, we made it out but shouldn’t have tried it. Come to think of it I got another one same type of road but monsoon conditions and we had to ford 11 raging rivers of flash flood. I’ll never forget that one, good thing I had high ground clearance. And chains!
I’ve never had to walk out too far, maybe 5 miles or so? One time we were towed 168 miles to the nearest AAA contract station, no charge. They have changed that policy! And then, we “bought” a Ford truck from the garage with nine firearms as security. Came back a couple weeks later with a flatbed trailer to pick up our broke down truck. This was a guy that was buying recovered stolen vehicles from Border patrol. He had quite an inventory of stolen trucks that insurance companies write off, and he makes bids. He was real close to Lukeville, which is like nowhere. Of course, there is no warranty but he only had vehicles that were driven right up to the border and his prices were decent, considering that he was far from any town, Ajo was the closest. Anyway, seemed like a place to pick up a decent vehicle, cheap. And he was willing to dicker, although those nine guns were worth twice what the truck cost.
Here I am sidetracked from hiking out broke down or hurt? Sorry!
Good hunting. El Bee
