What's everyones opinion? I am going to replace my 265-70R-17's GoodYear Wrangler AT/S tires on my Tahoe. These have been pretty good tires, BTW.
I drive 90+ % of the time on pavement, So I am not really looking for rock crawling or hvy 4x4 action, but the occasional off road tires.
Opinions?

Well, I bought 4 Hankooks, 285x36 for the price of 3 Goodrich's. So far, no complains. Available from Pep Boys, a rebate deal and the check arrived about a week later, not months later like some deals. You could do worse. I have had some catastrophic failures with Goodrich, BTW.

You have had catastrophic failures with the BF Goodrich's? I was giving serious thought to the BFG AT KO's or such.

Been rollin' on E-rated Cooper AT/3s for the last 40k. M+S rated, reasonably priced and tough. They handle real well in the wet, but I've noticed they ain't as great in the snow with 40k of tread wore off. First two winters they were excellent in the snow and mud.
Very quiet on road for the first 25k, but have grown a nice hum in the last year. This set will get me thru this winter and warm season. Before next winter, will replace these with a fresh set of AT/3s. Have had BFG and Nitto Terra Grapplers, like these AT/3s the best...

Did your gas mileage go down with the Coopers?
Posted by MI VHNTR (Member # 3370) on January 26, 2014, 05:43 PM:
I picked up some Cooper E rated tires for my Super Duty last Fall. No complaints so far on the snow and ice. My trucks pushes snow very well with them too. Discount Tire Direct had good prices and fast/free shipping on them.

I've always been a Cooper fan as well. I change out for winter to the Blizzak's though. If you have to drive on nasty, icy roads, the Blizzak's are king of the road.

Haven't noticed any percepible fluctuation in gas mileage, Dan.

My hunting bud has a brother who works for and partly owns a company in the NoDak oil fields. Can't remember all the details but they have many trucks that travel on and off road a lot.(awful LOT)After lots of experience and testing they decided on General 'Grabbers'for mileage, highway quietness and economy.
I bought a set for my Tundra and was very pleased.Good off road but also very quiet on road. Also were cheaper than what I had been using and looking at.

Best off road tires I ever had was a set of Gates Commandos.
Posted by DAA (Member # 11) on January 27, 2014, 09:25 AM:
Dan, don't take this wrong, but if you've been happy with the AT/S, you ought to be crazy with joy with just about anything else.
Just my opinion, based on quite a bit of experience, but to me, those AT/S are garbage.
I've had catastrophic failures with BFG's too. More than with any other brand. But that's only because I have run them more than any other brand. I've had the most catastrophic failures per mile with GY Wranglers AT/S. I swear, I don't think I've ever had a set of those wear out before gashing out a sidewall or having a Snapple cap go right through the tread face. They get stuck on a piece of wet toilet paper too. Fuckin' hate those tires...
That said... I'm running GY Duratracs on my new truck and love them so far. Too agressive for what you are describing though. Ditto for the MT/R's, I really like the old style ones, but they don't make 'em anymore (I don't care for the new Kevlar's) and they'd be too agressive anyway.
I ran several sets of Cooper's a long time ago, was pretty "meh" about them. Discount Tire pushes them hard, so prices can be good (that's why I ran them when I did), most guys do seem pretty happy with them too. And it's not like I was "unhappy" with them, just wasn't ever all that in love with them either is all.
Almost hate to say it, because they haven't done a gawd damn thing to them in about 20 years while the rest of the tire world seems to be improving stuff constantly, but the BFG AT/KO is probably the best all around for what you describe, IMO.
Bang for the buck, I'm running a set of Falken Wild Peaks on my daily driver. I've been half assed amazed at how well they perform for the price. Kind of heavy and homely looking though.
Few guys around here running the newest Dunlop's, giving them rave reviews. I might try them next.

Well Dave you got me laughing a little on that last reply. I just got back from the tire store and had them remove a nail I picked up in AZ and plug the tire.
In all fairness, these GY AT/S tires have 63000 on them.
Discovered I need to replace at least 2 of the TPMS do-wacky-doo's also.
Posted by Kokopelli (Member # 633) on January 28, 2014, 03:54 AM:
Oh yeah............Blame Arizona for the nail.
How do you know that it didn't come from Oklahoma ??
They use nails there to hold the pavement down in the wind, don't they ??
Posted by DanS (Member # 316) on January 28, 2014, 03:01 PM:
Nope can't blame Okie-land. One trip to SE AZ, I had to fix 4 flats, from thorns, nails, and such, and replace one tire that blew out on a gravel road from a rock puncture.
Good God though, those people in OK City are freaking lunatics, well maybe just the ones driving on the highways.
Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on January 28, 2014, 04:45 PM:
If you think Okies drive crazy, you should try Oregon. Hostile to CA plates, worse than AZ! I can only imagine how they would react to OHIO!

I don't remember those Gates, but they couldn't have been any louder than the Armstrong Miracle Traction were they?
Which, now that I think about it, even those Armsrong's were pretty quiet compared to just about any Swamper - Bogger, TSL, TBL, TRxus, ThornTURD they're all loud as hell. Not very round, either...

Don't remember Gates? Hmm? Might have been before your time? Bias ply tires might not roll round for the first 100 miles, but seemed like I got less flats than with radials?
Remember the good old days, no smart phones, but we had CB radios.
Don't remember CB radios? Hmm?

10-4 good buddy. My dad was a CB junkie back in the 70's. Had the ginormous crank up (later electric) tower on the house, giant linear amps with the glass tubes...the whole bit. Souped up radios in the trucks as well. Our neighbors hated us, when pops started talking it bled all over thier tv's and radios.

Guess you'll have to take the word of us old scudders. Commandos were plenty loud, but even they paled to my Monster Mudders. Those tires pretty much wore out the front end and drive train on my 1/2 ton Chivy.
Posted by MI VHNTR (Member # 3370) on January 30, 2014, 06:47 PM:
How about the old Goodyear Suburbanite XG tires. I went a lot of places, most that I shouldn't have, with them on my CJ 5.

Don't remember CB's? Perish the thought. Got 'em in both my rigs.
Very familiar with needing to warm up the bias plies too. Ran many a set of them. Those Swampers are out of round right out of the mold though. Traction like crazy. Tough like crazy. Suck ass on the highway like crazy.

I remember saving up my paper route money as a kid and dreaming at the local Radio Shack store for the Uniden CB, whip antenna roof mount brace, and 110-->12V power supply to get my 'base station' set up!
Our little 'crew' of bmx maniacs all had CBs at our houses and we'd BS on channel 23 for a spell each night. Our parents wouldn't let us on the phone for more than a minute, so you could say the CB radio was 'social media' for us at the time, LOL!
I remember getting a 'mosquito' linear amp, then a more powerful one to "step on" other CB'ers. Experienced the same TV warpage as Mark explained, so had to cut the power back down. Good times!
Got a little CB mounted in my truck, where my pullout ashtray used to be. Use it all the time for bullshit sesssions when roadtrippin' up to the farm & what-not. Also, the CB is good for a laugh to catch the truckers on 19 breakin' each other's ballz in traffic around the city!!!

All the hound hunters have marine radios in their trucks instead of cb,s. What's the difference? They say they are better?
Posted by Moe (Member # 4494) on February 19, 2014, 01:09 PM:
CB's are only allowed a 5 watt input. Marine radios can have a 25 watt input. Some marine channels are also used by law enforcement.

I bought 4 Hankooks for my Ranger (235X75 15') 6 PlY's for $581.00. I received $70.00 rebate from Hankook and $70.00 from Ford. This got the price down to a about $110.00 per tire. I actually bought the tires right from my Ford dealer. That price included mounting, balancing, and tax.
Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on March 07, 2014, 07:52 AM:
Mert, I am running Hankooks, as well. I got a quote from a couple places, including Costco of right around $1,000 for four 285X70RX17. I paid same initial price at Pep Boys but the rebate check came about a week later for $259. Pretty good discount, no complaints.

Well I went and bought the Cooper Discovery AT3's. Stayed with the same size 265-70R-17's. Oh yea, had to replace the TPMS's also. Those went out on me a few thousand miles ago.
The Coopers get 1-2 MPG less on the highway than the Goodyears , but if the traction is better, So be it!

As Dave said way back, BFG hasn't changed the all terrain T/A KO in 20 years, I'm bumping this thread to say they have made some changes.
The new KO2's will be launched on the 18th with most all sizes expected in November. I talked to a guy this morning who tested them at Baja and he loved em. They are gonna be a little more aggressive but will have a much stronger sidewall. Be worth looking at I think.

I have a set of the old ones with 35000 miles that have been a great tire.

Interesting because a high percentage of my failures have been sidewalls. Barrel cactus or shale.

Dan, its been a couple months...how are you diggin' the AT/3s?
I'm about ready to put new rubber on before snow starts flying. My AT/3s still have meat @ ~48K, but they're about done for practical purposes. 95% sure I'm goin' with the AT/3s again.
Did notice that the BFG TA/KOs were on sale locally, but Cooper has a rebate going. A fresh set of AT/3s, mounted & high spd balanced + taxes -rebate, comes out to be less than the price of the TA/KOs, alone.

I've been in AZ long enough to find out that tires wear out from sun damage faster than trades.. I used to buy the expensive michelins , but never went through treads!
Now, I have some Pathfinder sports and Love them.. They are semi aggressive thread that looks great and they are not loud..
Cheap too.
Posted by DanS (Member # 316) on September 15, 2014, 05:54 PM:
I like the tires. I haven't done any aggressive 4 wheeling with my Tahoe, but they get good gas mileage especially for the tread, and are not loud like I thought they might be. I have a minivan (work van) full of company tools that I drive most of the time, except when I go hunting or fishing. So I don't put much mileage on my hoe.
Posted by knockemdown (Member # 3588) on September 16, 2014, 04:35 AM:
Cool, thanks!
Got my fresh set on last night. The old rears were starting to scallop, guess its time for new rear shocks, too. And mebbe those custom Deaver leafs as well...
Still, coulda prolly got another 5K outta the old set, but the new ones roll sooooo smooth & quiet, comparatively...

I read a lengthly report this morning by some rating group. It rated 20 brands of tires and the three Chinese offerings came in 18-19 &20th.
But, they didn't list Hankook so I googled it and first of all, it's a South Korean Company, not Chinese, as I had assumed.
Also, they apparently make a very decent product, very hitech. Had a tour of their very modern automated factory. They have several.
And, they definitely have their own way of doing things, proprietary
trade secrets, etc.
So, I felt pretty good about it because I have been having a few doubts. Not from experience, just (you know) foreign company.
But, all the American companies farm out their manufacturing, so it's hard to remain patriotic when they are chasing the buck.
If I can find the link, I will edit.

edit: here it is although I didn't notice it was from 2011, but still somewhat interesting.

I finally found a set of the KO2's and love em.

Haven't had em off road yet but they are a little more aggressive than the originals, should be at least as good. I wound up getting over 36000 miles on the originals and could've gotten 45000 if I had had it aligned but I flat wore the front ones out while the back ones had 3/8" of tread left.
These have been a good tire, thanks Dave for the reccomendation.

See a lot of those KO2's around here already and everyone seems really happy with them so far. One of my wheeling buddies drives for a race team and they ran them on the car he drove in the Baja 1K last week (he finished) and he was gushing about how tough they are.
Definitely planning to put them on the next rig that needs AT's.

Might as well mention too, I've got 10K on my Duratracs now on my 1/2 ton, absolutely no complaints. Yet. Have not been a fan of GY's in general, for a long, long time, so still reserving judgment!

The worst failure I ever had was Goodrich AT, damned near killed me while passing on US395. Kinda influenced my attitude ever since.

I'll add my .02 on tire failures. Any brand and type of tire can have a catastrophic failure. The most dependable tires are speed rated tires with an extra layer of nylon cord over the top of the steel belt to help hold everything together. The problem with speed rated tires is they charge quadruple what they are worth. Also, they don't make them for trucks. Working for a school district, I had access to State bid pricing which showed at what price they sold these tires to police departments within the state. They have a ton of markup on these tires. More markup that jewelry stores.
Despite the extra layer of protection, any tire will blow out if it gets hot enough which happens when run low. The extra flexing while running low is what generates the heat internally. I check my tires once a month and before any trips greater than 50 miles. It helps that I have a good two stage air compressor handy. My friends with motor homes come over to fill their tires up. Those stupid machines that you have to stick 4 quarters in don't go higher that 50 psi and usually they do not work.
Posted by TOM64 (Member # 561) on November 23, 2014, 07:42 PM:
After 2" of rain and 200 miles on the tires on highway and in the mud, I can honestly say these are the best AT's I've ever ran.
My oldest killed a nice buck today and I had to go get it out, the tires did great in the mud and I only put it in 4wd to avoid tearing up the pasture. Where it didn't matter, 2wd got a bite and we slung some mud!

No complaints on the Hankook Dynapros so far. Probably about 10k miles and they still look new. No disappointments in handling terrain or conditions.

Thinking I'm probably going to put the KO2's on my Land Cruiser sometime before the snow flies. The Falken's on it now still have a lot of tread left and would still be fine this winter but I'm really sick of looking at them.
Probably KM3's for the Jeep next spring.
