A couple 12V jacks for the light, and? Kill switches for the brake/back-up lights? Intercom so you don't need to pound on the roof. A comfortable swivel stool bolted in place. Coat-hooks on the shell for hanging kills. Flat black paint job on the shell to keep reflection down. Four bumper mounted amber lights for stealth driving.
BTW, where did you find the large roof hatch? I've been looking for a while and came up empty.

Just make sure the hatch cover has a place to store. Nothing like a roomy hatch, but you need a decent place to store it.
NASA, those things you mention, I'm sure Gary knows to include them. You can have the hatch made at just about any sheet metal shop.
You guys never saw my rig, but it's a walk through, from the cab. No crawling through a boot.
Good hunting. LB

Note how hatch slips into slot, out of the way. (ignore stealth paint) see "tee" cutout for walk through, (unitized)

You can see the laser for marking down animals

hatch tucks away

those loops are for dressing the light cord off the floor, so as not to be stepped on, usually by the shooter. [ August 01, 2006, 06:09 PM: Message edited by: Leonard ]

Get you a 12 volt to 110 volt converter and install it and you can run a refrigerator to keep your sasparilla cool or power your laptop or TV.
I built this thing to go on top of the rack on my camper shell. It bolts on to the rack and has a hinged back for easy unloading. Wouldn't be any problem to put a fold back hatch in the middle if you wanted. I drilled holes all around to use with tie down ropes. I can also tie fishing rod cases, shovels, etc to the sides of it.

In a couple pics, you can see the "ammo" box we sit on. Inside are all the utensils for camping, making coffee, etc.
You know what you want, Gary, but if it were ME, I'd be careful about making the hatch TOO wide. Reason is I like to have 8-10" all the way around, for my elbows, when shooting.
My partner had a hinged hatch, he removed the back rack and laid hatch flat, then replaced the back piece. Some bouncing. Had some rain water and snow melt dumped on me a number of times, pulling it down, into place. Kind of slow on a crosser, if the hatch was in place.
I always wonder about those Texas high chair rigs, when it's cold, and when there are overhanging trees?
Good hunting. LB

Cool picture.
Funny how things cycle. Years ago, that's exactly how we did it, hang them outside....hardly any place to put them inside?
On one hunt, we half masted the tailgate and should have had twenty by morning, stacked like cordwood. Bad roads had caused three or four to slip out and no time to backtrack. And, it made a difference at check in.
Then came the whiners with the "public display" angle. Can't offend anybody. If you do, you get disqualified from the hunt.
So, leak proof compartments and/or industrial strength hermetically sealed plastic bags.
Eventually, "body count" became such an issue that we had to consider a proof of kill, there just was no place to keep 500 pounds of coyote.
Blood is very hard on a paint job, but hanging them sure decreases the blood and fluids when skinning time comes. God, how I hate pulling half frozen coyotes, in the morning!
Good hunting. LB

That pisses me off. My Titan has an ARE shell and when I inquired, they told me it couldn't be done! I don't care about walking on top any more, but I have not started with the hatch. However, it sure looks like there is a square sheet of plywood molded into the roof?
Good hunting. LB

I built a NM style California varmint rig. It's just like the normal ones you see except no fancy lighting, eyes lights or blackout systems. Notice the 16" guns on my first California style varmint rig. I'm the kid on the right and my little brother on the left. [ October 04, 2006, 06:39 PM: Message edited by: onecoyote ]

That was back in the early 50s, I don't remember. All I can say is it was in Long Beach somewhere, you need a very large dock to park the Big Mo.

This is an old thread, but I'm in the process of modifying the cap on the back of my pickup.
I'd like to see some pictures if anyone would like to post them.
Thanks.
