I don’t know the answer? But, there is legal, permitted carry and something else.
Anybody have an opinion, one way or the other?
I think packing is worthwhile. How far does one go? Are you the type that has a shotgun behind every door and hidden handguns scattered all over the house?
So, how paranoid are you? Anybody?

Okay, now that we have you on record, what do you carry? I like to switch, but some have dedicated gear that is first class. What’s your minimum level?

Couple of thing;
(1) Something that you always have with you.
(2) Something that is not obvious. In my case a Ruger .380 LCP in a Sneaky Pete holster. Looks like a smart phone case & I have never been challenged on it.
(3) Most important; The mind-set that if it's ever used, to fire center of mass until the thing goes click on empty.
(4) Say nothing to the police except 'I was scared', I don't remember', & 'Is he gonna be ok??'. Forget the Macho Shit and shut the fuk up.

I have the permit but its more for carrying a 22 revolver when I run dogs. Pain in ass to get out of truck and load it in cold with cb. caps or any other shell. then back to truck and unload it again.
I do have a Berretta 22 also, that's my carry gun but seldom have it along, not much of a need for a pistol here less go to big towns which I don't go to.
Reason for 22 cal is simple, if I have to go to court over a shooting a bad guy I can prove I was not trying to kill him even if I mag dumped as a ballistic expert will go to my side on this stating its not enough gun in most cases. So I just say I wanted him to stop for fear for my life. Looks better compared to dirty Harry with 44 mag.

I've concealed carry a handgun of some type ever since returning from RVN. In today's world it is mandatory in my view. On the other hand, people who open carry are asking to be shot first. I've never understood the open carry mindset.

When I lived in California, I carried everywhere because it was California and my prior profession.
When we first moved to Wyoming, I didn't feel the need to carry as much, but with the increasing crime rate, I'm carrying more and more.

Yes and yes again.
The Dirty Harry .44 Mag can make you look like you're 'lying in wait' and then there's the over penetration issue unless you actually note that he shot .44 Specials, not Mag loads.
The open carry has never made sense to me. Seems that they're trying to project the 'I'm a badass / don't fuk with me' image. That's fine but in a bank robbery, the armed guard is always the first one shot.
I would rather no one know that I'm armed until the bad guy realizes he's made some really poor choices.
Hopefully never need to use it but again, fire one / fire 'em all.

Well. I understand the reasons against open carry. I used to think it wasn’t any big deal, as far as the open carry. there has since been compelling arguments in favor of not advertising that one is armed. On the other hand, there has always been arguments that are negative in regards to carrying concealed, so what is one to do?
I guess the safest course is the carry concealed and not advertise. But, here I am in the BLUEST of BLUE STATES. No hope to secure a permit unless I pay a thousand dollars.
I carry without a permit. What is the charges for such a practice? I mean, if stopped and the question will come up{ do you have a permit to carry concealed? The answer kinda is self incriminating.
But I have not been stopped and had to declare whether I am armed or not. That, all by itself is liable to land me in hot water. It’s a bit awkward to tell an officer that I am carrying concealed. What is the next action that you could imagine happening? I can imagine the officer doing something a bit hasty. Cops are automatically paranoid at the concept of a citizen being armed. The first thing that comes to mind, by the officer is to uncerrimoniasly disarm to citizen. The next thing is that he will immediately put the citizen on the defensive. What are you doing carrying a weapon and why are you carrying a weapon.
For me, I can’t say because I can legally carry concealed. Because, in this case, it’s not exactly legal. So, do I announce, in advance that I have a concealed weapon on my person? So, the question will be, why are you carrying a concealed weapon? What are your intentions? AS I have probably committed some offense, at this point, now what do I say? I want a lawyer, comes to mind.
I don’t have any answers, but I do carry, concealed, without benefit of a permit. All I can offer, as excuse, is that I am concerned for my personal safety. But, I assume that I am illegal, so now what?

But no. Is it illegal to carry without a concealed carry permit? I assume the answer is YES: it is some type of infraction.
If I’m in a vehicle and being stopped for some reason, I just make sure my firearm is in the open. I will probably just put it on the dash under the windshield.
This presents a problem if the officer asks; is it loaded? He could dream up something about a loaded gun in the vehicle. I have done so and so far, never had a problem. But, I guess it could happen. Any way you slice it, being stopped when you have a handgun could potentually be a problem.
Anybody have the answers, assuming a BLUE state?

Interesting questions.
Unless the officer was to specifically ask if you're carrying a concealed handgun I would not announce it.
If asked, I think I would immediately plead the 5th amendment and lawyer up.

Some cops ask if I have gun in truck and asked where but don't want to see it unless the cop is a gun buff. Sometimes I show my card and other times they never ask.
Some cops get a little nervous, so gun is in glove box or in case under the seat. Some guys have a holster next to center console with pistol right there to see. it makes some nervous as well and can see why, cause gun is right there for a quick draw.

In Utah we have “Constitutional carry” which means if you are 21 years old and can legally own a handgun you can conceal and don’t need a permit. The way it should be…

do you have to have permit from sheriff or police to purchase handgun??
Posted by www (Member # 3918) on October 04, 2026, 05:58 AM:
Maybe this can further complicate the issue.
• No Statewide Mandate: State law does not require you to volunteer that you have a firearm unless you are directly asked. However, you must never lie if an officer directly asks if you have a weapon.
• Local and Permit Restrictions: Issuing agencies or local sheriff departments can add specific conditions to your Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) license. For example, Orange County Sheriff's Department requires license holders to immediately disclose that they are armed upon contact with law enforcement.
• Show on Demand: Standard California CCW application terms state that you cannot refuse to show your license or surrender the weapon to a peace officer upon demand.

So what is meant by “surrender” upon demand? I’m thinking that, reaching into the glove compartment and handing the gun to the officer, is what might be termed PROBLEMATIC. It would me!
In fact, if I were the officer, at that point, I might ask the driver to step out? No doubt, a weapon freaks out a cop. That’s not going to change anytime soon. I suppose keeping your hands on the steering wheel might be the safest course of action?
I think it would be interesting to ask a bunch of cops what they do and how they handle the whole subject. I’d be interested in their thinking, on that subject.

Tim, no permit needed just the back ground check when you purchase the handgun. I have never had a concealed permit and have several handguns and I can conceal carry any of them in Utah…

Okay, how about walking in the woods packing iron? That’s as open carry as it gets. This is a different animal than urban “open carry”.
I assume this is allowed because I’ve done it without a lot of side eyes. Permissible for the hardliners?

I carry everyday. My pistol is on the shelf under my hat and when my hat goes on, so does my pistol. Always concealed. I remove it when I get to the jobsite and back on when we leave. I have my permit.
Constitutional carry does not allow you to carry in another state. A couple times a month we enter Communist Occupied Territory. Locals refer to it as Ft. Collins and Loveland. We are working in Wyoming right now and my permit allows me to carry in both those places.
I've been stopped a couple times while carrying. I put both hands on the steering wheel and say I am armed. I do not say I have a gun. The word gun could trigger something. A person just as well tell them right off the get-go because they are are going to find out as soon as they run your license.
First time was a city cop in a small western Kansas town. He said I was going a little fast, but I think the out of state license plate played a larger role. When I informed him I was armed, he simply said I won't go for mine if you don't go for yours. Sounded fair to me.
Next time was a little different. We had just left a jobsite with concrete blankets loaded in the trailer. There were only 4-5 and we always stack them in the back packed against the ramp. Never moved before, but this time one blew-out in front of a DOT truck. I pulled over and the guys hustled back down the road to retrieve it. Of course the DOT guy turned on the red and blues and pulled up behind me. I was out of the truck and when he approached me, I could tell he was mad. Real mad.
Anyways, after he berated me for a bit, I told him I was armed. I had two pistols in the truck and he asked where they were located after he checked my permit. He then proceeded to the my truck and took both of them back to his truck. He was there for a few minutes and when he returned, he had a totally different attituded. I reckon he saw I had had many background checks and wasn't a turd after all. He put the pistols on top of my tool box after he gave me a ticket for failure to secure my load.
