( that’s their “moto” ) It’s a nice little town of about 80,000. Was about around 15,000 when we moved here 50 years ago. Since the, there was a notable government effort to bring in “low income” apartments mainly. I think Upland has about 13,000 single family homes’
The name, UPLAND, before incorporation around 1903 or so used to refer to the north area which was part of Ontario, and they just casually referred to this part of the city as upland, which it was uphill and almost exclusively sectioned off in quarter mile sections of Lemon groves. Eureka Lemons to be specific. They have a thicker skin to deter the cold winters. I think the other variety is Myers and grown along the coast.
All the new construction in Uplland has been at the expense of the Lemon Groves. They intentionally left as many trees standing as practible. I had two trees, since died but the guy behind me had 8 Lemon trees. He pulled them up and planted Valencia Orange trees but just 3 because he needed a pool. I’ll never forget that extremely long crane that hoisted the fiberglass prefab pool over the house and planted in his back yard. It was an outragious sight to see the friggin’ poolextended out from the street over the house. Anyway….
So we moved in 1976 on New Year’s eve. Cold night and the utilities were not turned on. I had an argument with the Gas Co guy over the phone because I wanted to turn on the gas myself and that prick wouldn’t tell me that they had a disc installed so that you didn’t know why just turning the valve didn’t open up the gas. But he finally gave in about midnight and we were able to heat the house. You remember shit like that!
So here we are almost 51 years later and things have changed. A Fightinglot! For one thing, I have been a widower for over 21 years now. That part has been sad and lonely. I miss Nanc every day! She was such a perfect wife. When we met, not far up the road at the Mt Baldy Ski Lifts, seventeen years old and both virgins. We took care if that little detail a few months after meeting and it was such a perfect union! 46 years together ‘til death did we part. A tragic turn of events, I assure all reading this Stroll Down Memory Lane.
I’m trying to make to most of it. It was been very rough last night was terrible! Fighting to breath No sleep, only trying my best to breathe! I promise, it was pure torture! I don’t know why it comes and goes and I have so few solutions. LABORED BREATHING! INTENSE! Can’T sleep, just concentrate on my next breath! Pure terror! All night, somehow I slept only for an hour or so this morning about 7. You have no idea!

You brought back a few memories there, I remember when I was a kid in Anaheim miles of orange groves.Disneyland at the time was surrounded by them . I bet you won't find any of those anymore. Remember the fireworks all summer at 9 from Disneyland. we lived a couple miles from there and my brother and I would hike there and hop the fence and have fun. Bet ya can't do that anymore either. then we moved to Lompoc because of work for dad and the miles of flower fields for the Burpee,I believe, seed company. Then it all got planted in sugar beets. No more artists sitting by the fields painting pics of all those acres of flowers. Yep, got my first Weems call and started to call coyotes and bobcats.Even called in a Mtn. Lion once and it scared me but it left after it figured I was not big enough to eat. Yes indeed memory lane.
Hang in there Leonard we are all pulling for you.

My own self, I've moved around a bit. Grew up in Southern Michigan. Spent a while in Missouri where they pronounce it 'Misery' on the radio and referred to the Civil War as The War Of Northern Aggression.
Moved to Calif. in '71 when it was truly American Graffiti. A dream destroyed by good intentions and crooked politicians. Transferred to Wash. for work after the 6.8 Northridge Quake and promptly went thru the 6.5 Nisqually Quake. Western Wash. is a God-Forsaken corner of Hell too wet to burn, although I'm seeing on the News that they're trying.
So ............ Retired, drove the truck to the Ore. / Wash. State line, pulled over and ran across the freeway to urinate on the Welcome To Wash. sign and moved to Arizona where we've been in a drought for twenty years. The hunting has changed quite a bit and not for the better. Tags are hard to impossible to draw and Game & Fish is still promoting for more people to start hunting & fishing. All about the $$$ I guess.
Thankfully, I can still fling arrows at coyotes without too much hassle, although we did lose trapping.
The time's, they are a' changing.

Goodness, ko ko. You have been a bit of a Vagabond. ( is that correct, I don’t really know what the hell it means?) Gadabought?
And Walt! You could have fooled me! For some reason, I assumed that you were a home grown Nevada-phile, or “native Nevadan”? Very curious as to why you ended up in Eureka, was it? somewhere along the LONELIEST HIGHWAY IN AMERICA, US 50. And, it is that, for sure! Interesting drive across the middle of the state. But a nice pleasant drive, just damned interesting country as it rolls by; but watch the gas!
I remember when Monitor Valley didn’t have any elk and pronghorns. Now it does Is that right? I’m drawing a blank on the valley north of Tonopah? You know, when it’s been a few years since you have been there, and at this age, names sometimes escapes you. Suddenly, details like names can’t be “recollected” as in rlier years. But I can still remember details from 60 years ago. WTF!
I have had some relief the last day or so. It was wonderful while it lasted but just very recently, breathing is labored. I’m pondering solutions, and trying to nip it in the bud. Damn! this is such a fucked up condition! when you can’t breath, that’s pretty much all you think about! And rack your feble brain for solutions! Solutions are limited. Nebulizers, narcotics, cough syrup, very deep breathing, if at all possible, and satisfying deep breathing can often be hard to come by, as hard to comprehend as it is. hey-breathing is automatic, you dont even have to think about it….right?
Not in this case, and I don’t really understand WHY? Suddenly my lung capacity is less than adequate. I’m not completely understanding what the hell is the nature of the entire problem? Mucus is a huge problem for me and I cannot hack it up. I take the strongest ant mucus medication available but it/they have limited benefit.
I had a cat scan at Pomona Valley and they said it showed no visible blood clotting in the lungs, due I assume to the blood thinners that I have been taking. So, what’s the problem? Blood clots on both lungs is what started this whole mess, so if they are gone, or undetectable, the why is my breathing so compromised? That is a huge unknowable question. At least at my level of understanding.
I know all of this is exceedingly uninteresting to the Peanut Gallery, but I’m just ? I don’t know wgat the hell I mean, I’m just ramblingso please bear with me! I’m a sick man, obviously sharing my thoughts.
My grandson is leaving tomorrow and OH MY GOD! I already miss him so much it’s unbelievable! He has beed a godsend! Just taking care of everything. He is great and I am tremendously indebted to him! He is flying back home to Colorado Springs tomorrow. He has been invaluable!. Right now he left for the grocery store and I’m having little panic attacks because he’s not here right now.
Corey is driving down tomorrow fro San Rafeal, It’s 430 miles, usually an 8+ hour drive.. He is also a tremendous help, but Aaron has REALLY STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE! I know I’m going to miss him SO MUCH! And to think that we all had a few doubts and reservations about if he could be counted on; this is extremely serious shit! But he has been amazing! I will miss him, MISS HIM VERY MUCH! He has done a magnificent job of caring for me. Just excellent and total dedication to his PaPa. Damn! I did something right with that young man! PS he lived with us during his high school years and his parents were having divorce problems, you know how that can be? So NANA and PA PA definately had an influence on him as a teenager. He says all the time that we “practically” raised him, and that’s probably 75% accurate.
OK so I apologize for the rambling, but this is where my thoughts are, these days.

I was born two blocks from where I live now, same city how about that for you world travelers. I left for short spell after high school and joined Airforce, did my time and got out and moved back home. Did a lot of traveling either work or hunting to most of western and southwestern states and drove truck few time from coast to coast in U.S. and Canada in winter months. I saw the big city life and realized I want no part of that.
No orange or Lemon tree's here but just about every apple and pear tree you can think of and some fruit like raspberry's and strawberries. Sweet peas and sweet corn, potatos and beets..
like said Leonard try laying on stomach when you need to clear your lungs, don't cough but force air out of your airway, more like a hacking type cough I guess, try use air in lungs to force it out. takecare and good luck..

I can see why you would believe me to be a native, but no, I was born in Philly Pa Moved to El Centro than La Mirada, Anehiem and then Lompoc til I was in high school and then did my senior year of HS in Longview,Wa. Got married to my HS sweetheart and moved to Lake Tahoe and fell in love with Nevada and the Great Basin Desert. Which the wife and spent many years exploring and hunting. I was so much liking my wide open spaces and freedom I swore it would take a small thermonuclear bomb to get me out of there. Well the bomb went off and I ended up in Utah where my present wife is from. Then it was back to a Nevada because I had a place in Ruth, I little mining town on Hwy 50 right by Ely..Work took me back and forth from Tahoe to Vegas and finally I had made promises to my daughter and ended up moving here to Tellico Plains TN. One of the guys on another coyote site called me NVWalt and the handle stuck. What a long winded bit of dribble this post turned into. But that's how I got that handle And yes I very much miss the mountains and valleys of Nevada but I gave my word and like it or not stuck to it I am not good at lying or going against my word. So you got a Readers Digest travel history of a loony old bastard that actually likes it here in Tn.go figure,crowded,people moving in from blue states by the droves and no where to fly my kites and no real gun ranges.
But I found a 22 range in the nearby town that shoots 22 bench and that's where I am off to today to see if I can improve my score. At least it is shooting with like minded people.
Take care there Leonard and you should try TA's advise on getting that phlem and stuff up as it does work,it did for me anyways.

Hey Walt;
One thing about Olympia was that there was a really nice rifle / pistol / black powder / archery range. It was usually wet but still nice. A lot of old growth timber.
Was out there one day sighting something in on the rifle range and noticed an older guy all the way on the end just sitting at the bench aiming at a blank sheet of white paper at about 25 yards. About every 5 or 10 minutes he would fire a shot. Sounded like a .22 lr. I scoped his target and there was nothing but a few random holes in the paper. ????
He finally took a break to rest his eyes so I went over to chat with him. He said that he was hunting. ![[Confused]](confused.gif) He then explained that he couldn't get out too much anymore so he sprayed a sheet of typing paper with sugar water and waited for flies to land, then took his shot. He was shooting an Auswich (sp?) rifle that looked pretty nice for flies. He said that every once in a while a Yellow Jacket would land & "Them's big game !!!"
We find our entertainment where we can.
