Went to Phoenix to visit with some friends, go to Cabela's to burn some credit card points and go to the Outdoor Expo.
Had a great time. Picked up a bunch of stuff I don't really need at Cabela's including a full auto co2 bb gun. Should be fun to dink around with.
The Outdoor Expo was well attended and well worth the price of admission. My only bitch was the traffic control getting out. Hurry up and wait ... and wait ... and wait.
Overall ......... a good day !!!

One thing that I did pick up that was probably a good idea was an inflatable life jacket. I paddle the canoe back into some nice secluded inlet for a day in calm water and by the time I'm ready to head home there's whitecaps on the main lake. Sometimes it makes for a bit of an adventure getting back to the boat launch. [Eek!]

Stay closer to shore when water gets rough. I always carried a life float that goes around your waste with a buckle to fasten it. Gives your arms plenty of room to paddle and can be used as a seat cushion as well.

Depending on bottom structure, closer to shore is where the waves can really get ugly. Bow on or stern on isn't too bad. It's when the waves are hitting abeam that can get a bit scary. [Eek!]

My adventure boating

Me and two friends got a rental boat at Davy’s Locker in Newport. It has a live well in the middle and they give you a half scoop of anchovies.

I don’t know if we knew about staying in the bay but we didn’t. We went south along the coast and fished offshore. AS I recall, we caught sculpin and calico’s, not a lot but we did stay anchored in the same place for a couple of hours.

Without being aware, the tide had come in and suddenly a wave came at us and the fucking boat stood on end like a bobber. All tackle boxes, which were open, of course went to the front, which was covered, otherwise we would have already swamped. But, we were hanging on to seats to keep from falling into the covered front of the boat.

The damned anchor was lodged on the volcanic bottom and it was really stuck! Now the wave went by and the boat settled almost level but here comes another swell and there was no stopping the boat from upending again. Now there were two of us pulling on the anchor rope, which did have a length of chain next to the anchor.

That’s actually what we figured was hung up on bottom projections was the anchor chain. We were finally able to jerk it free and get the anchor pulled up, and I don’t even know how long it was, at least 40 feet plenty of rope for the bay, but out here in the cliffs, who knows? But just our luck with the tide out we didn’t have any trouble anchoring….until the tide snuck in on us.

Everybody could swin and we were only maybe a quarter mile offshore so if everybody got out without breaking a leg, we could swim to shore, and figure out what to say at the rental place.

If it doesn’t sound hairy enough, I’m just not using enough exclamation points! We were terrified! Three high school buddies, young and dumb.

Good hunting. El Bee

Better explanation, stay closer to shore out of the wind, less waves.

You don’t know much about the ocean and surf, do ya? Nobody anchors close to shore you got breakers all day, and all night, some just bigger than others, but you always have surf close to shore. In fact, I had snorkeled this stretch of shoreline many times and knew what the bottom looked like, spearfishing. We didn’t know very much about Great White sharks, in those days. The most common, by far is the Blue shark, sand shark and Leopard shark. Plus several skates and Rays. There are a lot of Moray Eels, abalone and a few lobster. One day we got 150 black abalone right off Emerald Bay. Fried, they might be the best seafood there is. Don’t tell anybody, I think we were poaching?

Anyway. Where we were fishing, we actually called this the “Third Beach” from Newport Beach and Crystal Cove. Next south is Emerald Bay, possibly the most beautiful of them all, including from La Jolla, Laguna Beach clear up to to Malibu. We had to sneak in to Emerald Bay, you can’t do it these days, guard shacks and it’s a Marine preserve anyway.

I was talking about lakes as that's all we have here. Wind picks up just stay close to shore and take long way around verses trying to fight wind and waves. Done it many times with a flat top duck boat with roughly 4-6" of gun rail.

He's not up to speed on Roosevelt Lake & our desert winds apparently, either. Beautiful place as long as you always remember that it will kill you if it gets the chance.

We got Lake Crowley, which is in Owen’s Valley between the Sierras and the White mountains.I think the have a rule that you must have at least a 25 horsepower out board on that lake for when it gets windy, you had better get your ass off that lake pronto! I’ve seen it, too! Opening day at Crowley, it’s common to limit out 30 minutes after sunrise. In other words, the fishing is usually fabulous….unless it gets windy. Actually, as I understand it, it’s wind that causes all waves, everywhere.

Good hunting. El Bee

Edit: well, he has Lake Superior and that’s enough. Read up on the Edmund Fitzgerald, lost with all hands hauling ore on Lake Superior. They wrote a song about it. I think that lake is more than a thousand feet deep?

big water Leonard. If wind blows from north, then stay along north bank and work way back to dock.

As for Edmond, I believe it was overloaded and a very long ship as well and it was along south shore when it went down. Wasn't there so don't know the exacts of what happen.

We have over 10,000 lakes here and i been on enough of them to know how get off of one when weather turns bad. Sometimes you just go with the flow and ride the wave back to shore.

Sadly, one of my many Super Powers is that no matter which way I go from the boat launch I'll be going back into the wind. Weather forecast be damned, I almost without fail am fighting the wind at the end of the day. Living in Paradise ain't always for sissies.

And another thing ....... [Mad]
Going thru the treasures that I brought back from Cabela's & the Outdoor Expo, the ONLY thing that doesn't have one of those stupid "Prop. 65 Known to the State of Calif. to contain chemicals ... " is a copy of "I didn't Know It Was Loaded" by Robert Rourk. Even a fiberglass cane pole is going to kill me. [Eek!]

Best I can offer is maybe annex AZ as a CA county. That wouldn’t be so bad and the fair former citizens of Arizona could help pay off The People’s Republik’s monumental DEBT! You folks will be a lifesaver! You might enjoy perks like discount tickets to Disneyland for residents! You’re gonna love being citizens of the Golden State!

I ........... like many others used to be a subject of the Golden State. Maybe if you were to elect Elon Musk as Governor .................. [Razz]

Fun times with liberals [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
I told one of the girls last night that if the Forces of Good (Republicans) can pick up a couple of more seats in the House & Senate, that we can open up a Constitutional Convention, repeal the 22nd Amendment and President Donald Trump can run & serve a third term. One could see the shudder go up her spine !!!!

Has anybody consulted Vance about Trump’s speculation? I suspect that he pretty much assumes that he would be a shoe in 3.5 years from now.

Edit: so why don’t y’all in Junior Kalifornia elect Musk? Why must we do all the heavy lifting?

"Why must we do all of the heavy lifting ????"

Because Calif. let the dream turn into a nightmare.
Because the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
Because in Calif. your politicians pander to the lowest common denominator.
Because Calif. NEEDS Elon Musk.
Because it would make liberal heads explode. [Big Grin]

Couple of things. I used to tie that cord they shoot through conduit to pull wire with when I went out to Pyramid Lake fly fishing from my tube. I have had the wind try to blow me across that lake a couple times and the cord was a pretty good lifeline. You don't want to try and hike around that lake believe me. Also, I came up with a get rich scheme . Get a box of travel umbrellas and sell them to Democrats as "THE SKY IS FALLING".Protection.you know guaranteed to protect you from falling skies. $99.98 + ship and handling.Maybe get some schmuck like Billy Mays to medicine show the product.
Maybe???

I would worry about an outboard going over the line and making a tangled mess. [Eek!]

The umbrella idea is great !!! PLUS ..... you could include INSURANCE for an additional small cost. [Big Grin]
Might also mention a huge SPF # in case of sunspots.

Walt: I cannot figure out the above sentence? Can you break it down? I’d really like to know what you are talking about.

I only passed Pyramid Lake on the highway going north, usually. And, at night. I once came upon a collision between a pickup, driven by an Indian, and a steer, that didn’t make it. I guess right on the reservation? But, as like down south on the Papago, drunk driving, and drunk walking, and just plain drunk sleeping on the pavement was always fairly common. Down there, littering, especially beer cans on the highway was in direct violation of the perceived environmentally conscious Native American. Also, and I was puzzled about this for years; the shear number of broken quart beer bottles at secluded turnouts where they would park and just get drunk, as a destination, or purpose.

It was years later than a buddy, while on a hunt in Utah, that I mentioned the Quart bottles all over that reservation, but close to major blacktop. My friend said, that’s no mystery. Having worked for years in retail liquor stores, I can tell you why: it’s the cheapest! Every other container is more expensive than quart bottles. So, that’s what those Indians drink. Needless to say, lots of shrines along 86….

I think Walt is referring to paracord (fiber or plastic) and tying off his tube at shore with other end tied to tube.
I've done similar with small duck boat or would have a long tail of it incase i went into the drink i could grab that and pull boat back to me. Or had the paddle tied off to it or even a shotgun while moving across a lake.
