I am mostly anti snake, especially rattlesnakes. If given any grief, I will take the time to kill a rattlesnake if I have nothing better to do. Otherwise, if they are no bother, I will probably not fuck with them. But, no promises!
So, this is an interesting encounter because the rattler is extra chubby and the King Snake is the biggest I've ever seen, personally.
The other thing is the markings. I have only seen our local King snakes and they are 3 colors, red and yellow or white, and black. It might be that they are considered "mountain" California King snakes, IDK? But, rattlers are scared shitless of king snakes! I've never seen a rattlesnake move so fast as when a King snake is after them! It's actually pretty cool to watch. But this one is a real big boy!

Yes, totally cool !!!
I'm pro-snake. Unless a rattler shows serious attitude w/clear eyes I'll usually give them a pass and just relocate them. If their eyes are cloudy I figure that they're ready to shed and grumpy 'cause their skin's too tight. I have a couple of snake hooks located on the property that are handy when needed. A visit to Hotel Rubbermaid and down the road they go.
Earlier this summer I found a mummified coral snake that was about 10 inches long. Had to get the snake guide out for that one; red on yellow, nasty fellow / red on black, put it back.

I have never seen a coral snake/ In fact, I always thought they were way back east like the Carolina's and Florida. OK, so I might be wrong. If ko ko saw one, I'm convinced. What I always heard, though, that because a coral snake is so small, the biggest worry would be if you got bit on a finger, they actually couldn't (like) bite you on the ankle, or the arm. That's what I heard from the Army days? Could be right, or I don't know?
Now about ko ko being such a cool guy with dangerous rattlesnakes and I remember that he sent me a photo of himself holding a very dead rattlesnake and it wasn't very big and intimidating either.... as I recall?
But, why take a chance; right?

I found it in my weight pit half way through my work-out. Laid up against the wall unnoticed for a long time & then went Rambo on me.

Absolute bullshit, they will bite whatever is available to sink a tooth in. Most common areas are hand/fingers, ankle and feet.

You know, while hunting coyotes at night, in the desert. Waving a spotlight around, which is done at the conclusion of a stand. The purpose is to perhaps pick up a flash of eyes as the immediate prelude to breaking off the stand. But anyway, you don't whip a spotlight around carelessly, except with purpose.
And when you do, very occasionally you might pick up a sidewinder that follows the heat from the light. It's rather strange, you can kind of herd the snake around as you move the beam in any direction that strikes your fancy. Just thought of it and I suppose it might be an obscure fact that not many would be aware of. Yes, totally useless information, I know.
But someday, you might use it to make yourself look knowledgeable....like I just did. ![[Razz]](tongue.gif)

edit: PS Victor, My military training tells me that no, a coral snake is not able to bite you on the ankle, even if you aren't wearing combat boots and socks.
But I know a guy that picked up a sidewinder, just playing around with it, at night of course. It demonstrated enough dexterity to twist around, even while he was holding it between his thumb and trigger finger and bite him on the thumb, which he had to have amputated a month later. Not all of it, but a lot.
