Daves pictures motivated me to post a couple. I still get to hunt big stuff occasionally and had a decent year this year. Killed a nice buck deer with a bow. A nice antelope with a bow. And a pretty good elk with a rifle. A couple of examples.

Crap, Cal, those are great lifetime trophies, let alone in one year!
Way to go!

Very Nice Deer and Elk Cal.
Posted by Kokopelli (Member # 633) on October 28, 2016, 02:36 PM:
Awesome !!!!
The high point of my season has been a coyote with a recurve and a couple of Traditional tournament trophies.
Hope you had help packing that elk out.
Posted by Eddie (Member # 4324) on October 28, 2016, 02:53 PM:
I would say that was a good year!!!
Good job!

A great season just got expensive, with taxidermy and all, which is a good problem to have
Dayum!!
Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on October 28, 2016, 06:58 PM:
Cal, you should rightly be proud of those trophies!
Unusual points on Wapiti left beam, BTW.
I'm jealous. LB

I'm a bit envious myself. I've never hunted elk but I have killed a couple of very nice bucks. A California 6 point mulie and a beautiful Washington state 5 point whitetail. A big double shovel caribou out of King Salmon, Alaska and a trophy class Mt Goat in SE Alaska And not a single picture to show of any of it.
Posted by 4949shooter (Member # 3530) on October 29, 2016, 03:48 AM:
Very nice. Luv the elk...
Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on October 29, 2016, 08:17 AM:
Interesting, Moe. I have never focused on cameras and hero shots. Sometimes, upon reflection, I regret it.
If I had photos of coyotes alone, we would get tired of the monotony in a hurry.
But, like some of us, tend to drift away from big game, for several reasons, the bureaucratic bullshit being a big reason, preference point deception, etc.
Good hunting. El Bee

I am the same way on pictures. I rarely even think to take a picture. My brother however is the exact opposite he makes sure he gets pictures everytime we are hunting. I am glad he does in some regards its fun to look back at them over the years.

After looking at Dave's buck and Cals trophies, I thought I'd add some levity, and show what we average Joes pop during deer season.
Do want to mention Leonard, this little buck fell to the .17 mach4 this morning....one well placed shot at around 80 yards. Damn photobucket....I cant get image to post?

I am an amateur photographer but when I shot my first big buck I couldn't really afford a camera. I have no excuse for not taking a picture of the whitetail. It was massive, tho.
The mountain goat was a hunt out of the PA12 float plane. The lake was on the border of Canada and Alaska and between two glaciers. We slept in the plane overnight because you can't fly and hunt the same day. We had to climb up 3000 ft of very dangerous mountain. After killing the goats, there were 2 of us, we had to get them down. By the time we got back to the lake I didn't even think to take a picture. I was exhausted.
The caribou was out on the tundra. I spent a good portion of a day chasing ptarmigan around the lake. It dropped down to 20 degrees one night and the lake froze. We were afraid we wouldn't be able to fly out. When we bagged our caribou, there were 3 of us, I went take pa picture with my Canon A1 and the battery was dead. Damn!
I'm kinda camera shy anyway but I do have a few hero shots. Since hunting waterfowl was my next biggest interest behind calling I have more of those than anything else. Here's one from a day of hunting at Tule Lake years ago.

More recently. Taken near Umatilla, Oregon. A morning hunt for 2. 8 geese and 14 mallards.

Vic, that could be a Coues? In which case, it's a trophy.
Moe, never had a taste for waterfowl, especially ducks. You?
Good hunting. El Bee

Moe, that dark coyote is unbelievable.
I would stuff that sumbitch.

Moe;
How's that 'Coyote Helper' ?????
Posted by Moe (Member # 4494) on October 30, 2016, 06:06 AM:
LB...I do like ducks but a lot of guys think all ducks taste the same. Not true. I seldom make comments when someone posts their take of ducks for a morning especially when they include Spoonies or other ducks that taste awful. I shoot mallards and sprig and canvasbacks when I can get them. Most people overcook duck. I've heard guys say duck tastes like mud. Overcook a prime filet steak and see how it tastes.
4949 and Koko........no one is supposed to be able to scan through my pics like that. BTW....Black coyotes are a rarity in the west but very common in the south. Some even have a white patch on their chest. That was a western coyote.
Posted by UTcaller (Member # 8) on October 30, 2016, 09:39 AM:
Moe you are spot on about the way ducks taste. I mostly shoot mallards, pintails, widgeons, and gadwalls and if I throw them on the grill they damn near taste like steaks. I usually maranade them in olive oil ...
Posted by Moe (Member # 4494) on October 30, 2016, 10:38 AM:
I like Gadwalls as well. I shot a lot of them in northern California and North Central Washington at Moses Lake but not a single one here in Oregon.
I've been out with guys who don't know much about waterfowl and shoot a bunch of Ruddies or Bluebills and then say ducks taste awful. But, then, there are guys who target divers. To each his own, I reckon. I know Canvasbacks are divers but they're the best tasting duck, IMO. Cans are vegetarians but those others are not.
I like Teal, too. Named my first lab after them.

Cal,
I am jealous like the other guys. You are a modern day mountain man!!
You are a regular George Drouillard!! The most skilled hunter travelling with Lewis and Clark.
Those are super good ones man!! Congrats!! You're gonna have to mix pork fat AND pork with all that old buck burger!!
Elk steaks though....mmmmmmmmm.....makes my mouth water just thinking about it!!
Beautiful heads on both. Congrats again!!!
P.S.
Yes! Where is that speedgoat picture!?!?

The last picture I saw of a pronghorn that Cal killed, was literally, the biggest I've ever seen. Bases so big the taxidermist tag wouldn't go around the. I think it was top 3, all time, for Wyoming? Serious!

Yeah, he posted it on Huntmasters, if he didn't pull it, it's still here, if somebody wants to do a search? Seems like it was a brute with extra thick main branches, very unusual. He, (like Dave), knows where they are, and gets 'em.
Good hunting. El Bee

Yeah I agree Moe. I don't like divers either that's why I stay away from the main marshes. They come in by the hundreds of thousands this time a year that and the spoonies. I usually hunt the geese or smaller pockets of water where I know I can get a limit of mallards. I too love teal though. Fast and fun as hell to shoot at especially when they decoy in a large flock.
Posted by Locohead (Member # 15) on October 30, 2016, 04:26 PM:
Did you have to pass on any nice mature six-pointers to get that monster? I would think you'd have to....that bull is not your average monster even. Was it an over-the-counter or draw area?
I looked up the thread with your red desert B&C pronghorn. The areas in CO near the red desert are high preference point draw areas. I think I have something like 12-14 points and still can't draw.

Vic - Grandson's first coues hunt, came out of the Huachuca's, this year. As you know I have an extremely hard time walking but wouldn't miss his first hunt for love or money. His mother and dad both killed spikes, which made this hunt more enjoyable for him and I. Of course grandpa is going to have it mounted. One shot from my old Rem 600 in .308.

Nice one John, the kid done good! Nothing as pretty as our little whitetail is there. These damned mule deer have a longer face than John Kerry, ugly son of a guns compared to our Coues.
