The Hag, Merle Haggard died today he was 79. One of my favorites for sure. RIP..........

For some reason I crossed paths with Merle Haggard a number of times. Back when Reagan pardoned him he would occasionally drop in to a small tavern in Ridgecrest with his band and they'd perform for free.
I also remember working in Las Vegas back in the 60's after I got back from SE Asia and going into a little beer bar called Jay's in North LV and hearing the jukebox playing Mama Tried over and over.
A couple of years ago we stayed at a Holiday Inn Express in Bakersfield and found ourselves checking in at the same time as Merle Haggard. He was alone. We said hello but that was it.
One of a kind, for sure. There will never be another like him. He spent a lot of time in California's institutions like the reform school at Tehachapi but made a decent life for himself when given the opportunity.

When I was a kid, I rode with my dad when he made his daily rounds in the oil patch. Way before FM radios were in vehicles...I thought there were only two types of music...Country and Western!
My dad loved the Hag...he loved 'Fightin' side of Me' and 'Okie from Muskogee'.
Sad day indeed for music.

Yeah that's how I was. Listened to Merle since I was crawling around on the floor as a baby.lol My dad really liked him. I have wore out 8 tracks, cassette tapes, and CD's driving thousands of miles on two tracks in the deserts and mountains over the years listening to him, and Waylon and George Jones. They will be sadly missed.

According to the news, Merle passed due to complications from double pneumonia today on his 79th birthday. He had 38 #1 songs & sold millions of recordings.
After hearing of his passing, I drifted off trying to guess how many of his albums, 8 tracks, & cassettes I've bought. I possibly introduced "The Hag" to the locals in a couple of African countries by playing his cassettes on a boom box . Several of the local Africans could barely speak American but they could sing songs like "Today I Started Loving You Again" complete with southern accent.
F.Y.I. SiriusXM / Willies Roadhouse (ch 59) has been playing Merle's songs all day long nonstop, hosted by Paula Nelson (Willies daughter) & Dallas Wayne

got to see him open for George strait a couple years ago in wichita, he put on a heck of a show, and had the flu at the time but wouldn't cancel the show, George came out after merle and went on for 10 minutes about growing up listening to him and how good he was. I read a story the other day that merle had just bought a new touring bus so he wasn't planning on stopping

I heard a story about his last show in Vegas. He had pneumonia but refused to cancel. Toby Keith was in town and went to see him, he asked him if he could do anything. Merle asked him how many of his songs did he know and Toby replied "all of them". Merle sang until he couldn't and brought Toby out who finished the show with him.
While listening to Willies Road House, properly renamed Merle's Road House for the weekend, I realized I too knew "all of them" along with most everyone else I suppose.
There will never be another like him. RIP

sad day for sure. Country music, good ol country music is dieing a slow death and being replaced by the likes of wannabes who wouldn't know country music is it bit em in the ass. I can't hardly listen to todays "country" music on the radio. It belongs on some alternative radio or something. Rap and crap is what it is.
