I've long since wanted a nice rainbow trout for the wall. I set a goal many, many years ago about what I would consider a minimum size for mounting. Yesterday I caught this bruiser that not only met that goal but exceeded it. Note the bent elbows, and proximity to my chest. In other words he's not long armed. He's just plain awesome! Needless to say I'm one happy camper and this fish was hard earn and took me a lifetime to finally catch.

I already know he's a spin caster, but I do wonder from time to time if he resorts to bait, or flies & bubble or KastMasters?
My dad caught one like the above one time while we were all casting and retrieving but he was drowning a nightcrawler. I don't care, I'd still rather catch them my way.
I have more confidence in a flame red and gold Thomas Boyant than any other lure, second place, just about any Mepps spinner. But, I'm game to tie on any kind of spinning tackle.
That's a nice fish, BTW.
Good hunting. El Bee

Spin cast with a 1/8 oz marabou jig. It's about I use anymore. I may not put up the numbers like I did with spinners, but the average size of the fish I catch has shot through the roof.

Are you going with the skin mount or a fiberglass reproduction ???

The fins look pristine meaning the fish is a native.
Nice catch!

We had a rep from Weatherby give a talk, some time ago specifically on trophy's and handling and options. One thing I remember, on a skin mount, (fish) he recommended that we cut lengthwise down the middle on the off side. Seemed reasonable, but never tried it?
However, I think it's more popular, these days to take many photos of your catch before you return it to the water, alive. Then take it to a fish taxidermist. He is dialed in to a network and can probably find an already fabricated mold that will depict your fish the way you envision it, subject to your approval, he will create it out of fiberglass and acrylic into a almost perfect reproduction, based on your photos. They are lightweight and last forever and are pretty much like what you see hanging from the ceiling at a Cabela's or BassProShop.
I wouldn't ever have a skin mount done, again. Personal opinion. You can get exactly the same length and girth, exact presentation and if you can't locate one already made, one can be custom made. Of course, it's at least six months and $600 but, (and something a wife will never understand) better to do it than another regret....of which I have accumulated a number of them, personally.
I knew a dentist that was a fish nut. He built a 16 foot deep pond in his back yard, construction exactly like a swimming pool, waterfall and even a little bait Jacuzzi. And, he stocked it, and fished it. I've fish it, in fact. I think he claimed there were 5,000 fish in it? And, he had something like 50 acrylic fish mounts in his house. He was divorced.

I never weighed the fish but he is 26.5" long. I have very few fish mounted but when I do get them mounted it's always a skin mount. I personally do not like replica mounts and can usually tell if they are a replica from across the room. Hanging a plastic fish on the wall does absolutely nothing for me. I feel the same about replica antlers. To each their own.

I can't really disagree, Troy. Bottom line, nice fish and I'm sure you will enjoy it, forever actually, if not longer. And, you are to be commended for acting on it. I have a number of regrets, over the years; in some cases, not even a photo, I'm terrible about stuff like that.
I have one fiberglass 50 lb. wahoo, and I caught the fish, but I can't tell, standing in front of it, much less from across the room.... which isn't a fair measure, in this case because the room is only 12X14' from wall to wall. I don't even have a noble argument because I ate it, one of the best eating fish in the ocean, BTW. lol
Just as well you didn't weigh it. I have seen wildly different numbers pertaining to different 26.5" Rainbows, for instance. And, it's not necessarily the scale, some fish can be the same length and the weight can be way different. For my money, digital scales are the worst, for some reason?

Leonard I have a hard time seeing whahoo as anything but a trophy meal for the table. They are some of the best eating fish in the ocean. I also really love Mahi Mahi (dolphin fish) and red snapper. I'm not even much of a fish eater, but those 3 fish are incredibly good to eat.
Square patch of fur on the wall. My wife spent some time in Peru and it is alpaca fur.

I spent the last four years living on the gulf coast, fishing hard every summer with my son. Was fortunate to sample and eat most of the fish that swim out there. To my mind, the three best are dolphin, red snapper and grouper ,from the bay, red fish is the bomb.

Out here, we call them Dorado, Vic. Not only very tasty on the table but really fun to catch. I have seen them skim along the surface like a roller skate, (or a rat) coming from an acute angle then smack a trolled lure. I have never seen another fish do that; and I think it's only the bulls? Their arials are awesome, as is their electric flash in the water when you crank them closer to the boat. I could fish them all day, never tire of it; and have.
One time, we brought a bunch of Dorado to the restaurant where we were staying, and I have no idea how it was done but they were prepared in about four different ways and I couldn't believe it was the same fish? Delicious, every one! I guess that's what you get when they charge you $25 a head to serve your own fish. We never asked for a doggy bag but I'm sure there was a hell of a lot of people that dined on our fish that night. Oh yeah. And, they never know what you are talking about, should you ask. Suddenly, can't understand English. That's Mexico for ya. Actually, I've decided they don't need my money anymore.
Where were we? Yes, tasty fish. Hard to beat a nice Swordfish steak and have you noticed that halibut prices are through the roof? Saw boxes of King Crab at Costco yesterday. $196.00.Yikes! Possibly the finest fare from the sea?

Leonard, I forgot about sword fish. Yes, they are also a winner, winner, dinner. I have to say I envy the fact you have been able to fish for Dorado. What I'd give for a chance at a quality fishing trip for Dorado!!!

Yeah; the Mexicans call them dorado, for their gold coloration, most other places they are either called by their proper name, dolphin or mahi-mahi if caught in pacific locals. Whatever name you like, they are a blast to catch, and great eating. In the gulf, if we can find a grass float, regardless of size, either size of a kitchen table or a house, it will have a mob of dolphin swimming under it.

Yes, amazing, ain't it? A plastic bottle, an uprooted bush, odd chunk of styrofoam, will probably have a dozen Dorado under it. In the Gulf of California, (don't know other places) a little deeper and there might be a few yellowfin tuna under what could be a Starbucks coffee cup. Go figure? Remarkable, but never been able to figure out, as to why? Usually know right away if t's Dorado, or yellowfin, which go deep.
Damn, that's fun fishing!
