Nice hat. Someone needs to write on that YT video that he's pissed and will probably come back,.. with friends. Hell, I've seen a blood trail looked like the red carpet and still had a coyote not get recovered when it stops and the coyote keeps on going. For a coyote, blood is handy, but not a necessity, along with two lungs, most of their heart, or guts, for that matter. Pyrenee was just doing what it was bred to do.

BTW, I always thoughts coyot-ees lived in town. Coyotes live in the country. City limits must be just over those trees.

[Smile]

Yeah, I had to grin when he found a couple of drops of blood and stated "He won't go far."

But hey ............ he did alright. Protected his dogs and defended his right to carry.

My partner gut shot a coyote with a 220 swift. That female bitch walked and walked. How far we don't know because we gave up tracking her in an Orange grove. How did we know she was a female bitch, the coyote fetuses were laying on the ground in with the guts. Yes, I kinda laugh when he says it won't get far with just a few drops of blood.

Saw this a while back and the first thought that came to my mind was "Tool". Still couldn't keep from watching to the end and reveling in what he's learned living out amongst 'em. We've all crossed paths with dopes like this. I can't distance myself fast enough.

I'm just chuckling this morning , thinking of those words of wisdom: "HE WON'T GO FAR

I have done my share of tracking, and not because I can't shoot for beans. I have some rather well founded opinions about blood trails; quantity and length. Of the coyote variety, in particular.

The Leonard Rule states: if you manage to track a coyote by sign or blood, and you are 800 yards from the point of impact....
You will not find him!

First of all, that blood kind of seals off within the first 100 yards, or so and after that a drop here, a smear there, and plan on investing the balance of the morning leaping from point A to point B or point P, if you are lucky.

The most important blood is where he went down, you will learn much from the quantity of blood. Snow is almost unfair, BTW. You know how deer lay up and pressuring them will force them to get up and run another half mile? Seems like a coyote is not inclined to "Lay up"? They tend to keep going, you don't see where they have laid down and got up and laid down, etc.

They tend to keep trucking and there in lies the tale. If you look back and see that you are a half a mile from where he was shot, you might decide that you just aren't going to find him. But, do not give up inside of 800 yards. Go further, if conditions allow but your odds are getting slimmer with every step.

Most coyotes are recovered within half that distance, say a quarter mile. I don't know why it's important to me, but it is. I have to find him! To me, every coyote deserves to be recovered; "let 'em lay" isn't in my DNA. But you have to get practical at 800 yards, admit defeat.

Good hunting. El Bee

I've got nothing to back this up but an impression that I've gotten is that in brush a wounded coyote will go about a couple of hundred yards, check up where it feels somewhat safe and lick the wound. Blood trail stops and chance of recovery drops to damn near zero.
About the only thing gained is tracking skills that are handy come deer season.

with snow I have tracked as far as about 2 miles, on two occasisons, before I got a kill shot on the coyote. I was surprised that neither of them found a hole to go in before they traveled that distance.
I've wired a couple of wounded out of holes too. That is an interesting deal too. If they don't want to come out of the hole, they are tough to get pulled out, if they've got "fight" left in 'em.
They can sure drop a "little bit of blood" for a long time before it amounts to anything, that's for sure. Even the two that I tracked for the 2 miles were leaving what I'd call, a lot, and they were about out by the time I caught up. Out of blood and out of strength to go further.

That's dedication! Two miles!

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: koko. cats yes. They are big babies, they will lay up as soon as they get a chance. But, like they say, a coyote can haul more lead than a junk wagon.

Wonder how far this one got tracked? Won't go far my ass!! Little turds are tough as nails. Killed him yesterday and he was paired up. Not only did he go on making a living after the injury, he was still swinging the Betties.
