Last year was a record year for me and my hunting partner, having killed 95 before we were forced to shut things down by "injuries" (we're both getting older). This year, not so much. EHD all but wiped out our deer herd in most of Kansas after two years of bad, bad drought, and I'm worried that the coyotes went right behind them. We have 40-some now and many, if not most, of them were mangy. Hunted one spot today that gets replenished every time we kill one from the river two miles away. They piled up trees from clearing a hedge row into a half dozen BIG brush piles and there wasn't a single coyote track in the snow around any of the three I checked, and the snow's been down for five days. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)
Anyway, I got a couple pics yesterday morning of our first real snow of the year and another of this morning's sunrise. Hoary frost yesterday made things exceptionally impressive. Makes KS look like the Dakotas or something. We normally don't get this weather until a month from now.
This was about the best thing to see this morning. made eleven stands today and didn't call a thing. The only coyote I saw was standing in the backyard at a farm watching me drive by.
One of the many spots we call, up in "the pastures". Lotsa frost!
Sunrise, Christmas morning.
Mid-40's today knocked about 3 inches off the foot of snow we had. It's good as long as it's powder, then it's just a noisy PITA.

Got 16" here at home, but nothing up in my calling territory around Russell...might have to get together for another MLK day hunt. Got some good territory N of Lake Wilson on private land.

That same storm dropped 3+" of rain w/a skim coat of ice here. I was curious how much snow 3" of rain would make, now I know. Yesterday (Dec26th)was the first day of sunshine & mid 40's temps in a week, and like you said Lance, winter showed up appx 30 to 40 days early this year around here.

Usually about 10-12" of snow to the inch of moisture, generally.
Guess that would be around 30" or so, then.

Booger, an old Climatologist friend once said "We will never know the proper conversion factor of snow vs rain". But I am thankful that it was rain and not ice, or we would still be 'ahwaiting' the power company crews to restore power in the state. Did ya'll get a mix of rain & ice or "just" snow from the latest storm?

As usual; it depends. In some parts, rain proceeds the ice and snow according to seasonal conditions. I read somewhere that Eskimos have 140 words for different types of snow. I imagine it packs a bit differently, as well?
Anybody that has driven the Owens Valley, up 395 as I have a couple days ago knows about the Sierra's and it's snow, versus the White Mountains to the east that are far less gifted with snowfall. And, trees, etc.
So, what falls on Oklahoma sort of detracts from what's left for Iowa and it seems very arbitrary? Poor old west Texas never gets a break, clouds just don't like it there.
You want amazing weather, usually not of the actual frozen variety, try on southern Arizona's Monsoons, which roll up from Mexico out of the Pacific. If you have never seen the parched desert erupt with frogs that have been buried in the creek beds since last year, you are in for a real treat. In some cases, you have to slow down, the roads are so slippery with frog/toads. By tomorrow, they have mated and are dug in, again. And, don't think they don't get snow, or several inches of hail, down there, even in june.
Anyway, we in SoCal see a lot of midwest weather passing through. Right now, it's Santa Ana's. They reverse and blow from the deserts , offshore and bring unseasonable warm weather, currently around 75° most places in greater L.A. when it was freezing overnite, last week.

It rained here for 14+ hrs. straight the other night that produced the 3"+ total here. The temp stayed or "hovered" @ 31* until the moisture left then fell to the low 20's, day and night.

32, at one time the weather ch showed the whole state of Oklahoma covered in dark shades of ugly. Guymon, Boise, Beaver, (OK) all predicted lots of moisture, just figured you would get a fair share also. There's another front coming on Sunday.

Liberal, Dodge City and Booger's neighborhood was the line. North and west from there we were mostly under sunshine. Today 62 tomorrow 24 are the forecast highs. Another round of cold but flurries only. That's ok. Them folks in the northeast need a taste of global warm.....er.....climate change.

on Dec 5th?here, it was -29, yesterday it got to 40. was working on a roof with no gloves on.
now tonight lows of -22 and a blizzard warning.
glad we got the big warm up yesterday. it will put a good crust on the snow to keep it from blowwing around with the winds that are coming.

Kevin and I were just talking about you the other day, Tim. I have some time off coming and it seems a lot of the coyote number drops are localized. Flint Hills appear to have good numbers, too, whereas your area looks strong. Then again, they're issuing deer damage complaint tags for your area and our herd here was decreased by 70% according to the district biologist

Lance,
My season may have been cut a bit short...my wife got sick Friday with the flu, passed out yesterday in our bathroom and snapped her ankle!
I think I am in for about 2 1/2 months of being Mr. Housewife and taxi driver!
I will let you know more after we visit the bone doctor on Monday!

Dang the luck Tim. We wish the missus a speedy recovery. Had a similar mishap in May 1996 when my wife went down the stairs the hard way. It was tough taking care of her and three kids ages 2-8. She still has the plates and screws around here somewhere. Shout if we can help with something.

Sorry to hear that, Tim. My wife walked out the front door as our first snow was coming down and slipped on some ice at the bottom, landing on her hip. She's still sore as hell. Please tell her I hope she's feeling better soon. Get her a good orthopod and get 'er done. I tried two in Salina for my knee until I was referred to the guy in Manhattan that treats the KState football players. He's done a great job so far with me.

I slipped on the icy pathway leaving the Tahoe cabin last week and did some kind of wrench to my back? It's in a familiar location and I still know it's there. As it's happened before, as I recall, it just has to fade away maybe in another week or so? My main squeeze suggested a massage, might even do that, maybe New Years Day, at half time?
I'l let you know.
