My youngest son, Josh, wanted to go deer hunting this year so I had been trying to find a day that worked for both of us. Last Friday looked like a pretty good day for him to play hookey from school so we did just that.
The day started real slow with nothing but a couple does spotted by 10:00 AM. Finally we spotted a group of deer on a distant ridge top and while watching them, a buck skylined himself showing his antlers so we headed forth in that direction.
An hour of hiking with the last 100 yards crawling, we were on the ridge top opposite the ridge that the group of deer of was on. The range was still to far for him (380 yds) and the deer were unapproachable from where we were at so we just had to lay there and watch.
Several smaller bucks sparred and we could clearly hear the clack of antlers across from us. For a reason only known to the deer, a buck started walking down the ridge which if he stayed the course, would bring him closer to us.
We ducked back over the top of the ridge we were on and paralleled his course out of sight of the buck. We eased over the top and got set up as the buck was pawing out a bed. My son busted him in his bed at 230 yards followed by a pretty impressive downhill roll.
We were happy hunters and Josh had his first muley buck. A really fun and memorable day!
The shot was taken from the ridge top behind Josh.

Hmmmmm?? The pics from photobucket aren't showing up in the post like they normally do. Anybody have any suggestions? It's always kind of a pisser when you have to click on a link to view a pic.

Very nice Lonny. My son is a senior this year, and is heading off into the army fairly soon after graduation. I was laying around the other night thinking about all our hunting 'adventures' and wishing I had made him play hookie more often. Congrats and maintain.

(Leonard/Lonny) try removing the _ space between jpg and the /IMG brackets in the first link, that might work?
Photobucket is pissy about that, no spaces between the IMG brackets

Yep, that did it.
And use copy the DIRECT LINK from photo bucket, not the html link.
Then, bracket it (with no spaces) between IMG and /IMG (just add the brackets to each)

Thanks for the help knockem. And thanks you guys for the backslaps.
My son had a science test that day and I was tempted to wait until the weekend to take him, but after a bit of thought, it dawned on me that 20 years from now no one will remember how he did on the test. Success or not, we would both remember the day spent in the hills.
Dave Allen, we have pretty decent muley hunting close to home. All the river breaks country has mule deer in the open stuff. Most of the units have gone the way of controlled hunts for mule deer over the past 10 years and my son drew a tag for any mule deer.
Rifle used is a 243 AI in 700 ADL. I used the same rifle to kill my first few deer and coyotes many years ago. We gave it a makeover a few years back with a new barrel and stock. Bullet was a Barnes 85 grain TSX.
Pack out wasn't bad at all. Short carry followed by loading it on a Honda ATV. Gotta like that.

what's odd about the photo code is that simply copying it should not require editing? I'm a little confused about the options, like selecting "direct" seems to make no particular sense, to me. I'm more than willing to let Fred handle our techie stuff, from now on.
Barnes 85 gr. eh? So, where was the impact, and did he wander about a bit before keeling over, or drop in his tracks?

Leonard, It has me scratching my head a too. I was able with Fred's advice get the pic to come up in my original post, but still have some things to work out. Odd that this never happened before?
As far as the Barnes is concerned, it hit the shoulder clipped the lower portion of spine and lodged under the hide on the offside. The buck stiffened at the hit and slowly lowered it's head to the ground. Being rooted to the spot is what a spine hit will do, so maybe nothing can really be gained from this particular situation.
The verdict is still out for me on what these all copper bullets will do. There was surprisingly little meat damage/bloodshot. Which is a good thing when you are cutting it up for the freezer, but not maybe so much if your chasing it over the hills trying to stick another one into some critter?
I'll try posting a pic of the spent 85 grain bullet.
I tried to remove the space between jpg and [/IMG] when I edit, but it keeps reappearing each time I repost. Fred, any help on this?

Wow, can't argue with that! The downhill angle contributed to the spine shot.
I noticed you still have a space before IMG and I assume you didn't do it so it's some kind of software error, if you ask me? That Fred is so smart!

Thanks for the info about mulies being up in those breaks Lonny, had no idea ? just figured it was only whitetail country up there.
BTW, photobucket seems wierd to me now, might try and post a pic later.

Nice buck and the shooter looks happy...mission accomplished.
As for the Barnes bullets...I drew an antelope tag here a few years ago that was like winning the lottery. I chose Barnes for that hunt because if I was forced to take a less than desirable shot, I would be assured good penetration, and hopefully stem to stern pass through. As it turned out, the shot was frontal, left side, and the bullet exited just in front of the right side hip. I was impressed.
FYI...I missed the buck I scouted for 2 months and took just an average one.

Where was your hunt, Jim? I always saw more goats just north of St Johns than any other place in Arizona.

It was 19B, Leonard. Notoriously, a unit for bigguns. Land owners had begun to eff with sportsmen then in that unit. I paid a guy $200 to scout his ranch, the trespass fee was way higher. I told him I wouldn't be hunting his property since I couldn't find a $1K buck. Never did get my scouting deposit back. A solar outfit moved in a couple years later and shut the entire unit down. Hello, Texas!
