Promised my daughter I'd take her out and show her some coyotes - but NOT kill 'em.

So, got that checked off my list over the weekend.

Proof...

Come on Dave.

How do you do it? You have more candid wildlife photos than any normal outdoorsman would have, (casually, accidentally) by far.

What's your secret? A game park, or what? Are you calling these animals, including the deer?

Great photos!

Good hunting. El Bee

By the way, Dave. I had, (still do) the same problem with my daughter.

We had a boat out onJune lake one summer when she was about 6-7. Sat there for a couple hours, Mom Dad son and daughter, dropping bait into 30 feet of water and didn't catch a thing so I said, let's go somewhere else.

Up anchor and reeled in everybody. Shelley complied, and to the surface, (because it wasn't being held under by the barrel sinker) floated a belly up ten inch Rainbow.

Surprised, I reached for for it, and she yelled out: DON'T KILL IT!

I don't know, she won't even squash bugs, where did I go wrong?

Leonard, the biggest secret, is that it isn't casual or accidental. When I decide to go get pictures of wildlife, I put as much, or more effort and expense into it, as I would to go hunt the same animals. Really, it's usually more effort. For example,I rarely bother with a ghillie to kill coyotes, but use one routinely when trying to get pictures.

I don't just go about my business with my camera gear in the truck and just happen to see these animals. I go well out of my way to get the pictures, on purpose.

I do have a couple spots not far from home that I can sometimes get a picture of a coyote from the truck. And I'll take a stab at them once in awhile and have got some good coyote pics that way. But a lot of them, I'm out there calling, wearing more camo and taking greater pains in setup than I would if I was just going to kill them.

The other secret, is no secret at all - I go where the animals are! Can't get pictures of them if they ain't there.

For the deer pics, I don't mind sharing exactly where I go. Because my chances of drawing the tag aren't going to be effected. And, for that matter, I've had guys who HAVE drawn tags on those areas ask me for specifics on locations and I've gladly shared them. I can't hunt 'em, but if someone else draws out, I'm happy to share my info.

Coyote pics... Ahhhh NOPE. I don't share those locations with anyone. I'm sure you understand!

P.S...

I have, on multiple occasions, gone out and taken pictures of a coyote, or coyotes, then gone back in a week or two and killed them. Or at least, killed coyotes in the same spots. Never have actually positively identified one as being the same?

P.P.S...

I have also, gone back and photographed the same animals multiple times over a period of time. Like, mule deer in velvet, then the same exact buck again later in the fall during the rut.

Again, can't be positive with the coyotes, but think I have photographed some of them more than once too. Again, from the same spots, anyway.

Laughed out loud. You are a true "wolfer".

But, it's as I suspected. Way too much for serendipity photography.

Fantastic pics Dave.

I hope I'm not sounding soft here, but after seeing thousands of dead coyotes posted in pics on the boards over the years, the live ones make a way better pic.

Thanks for sharing the results.

Yes Sir.

The cheap one, Sigma 150-500. I hear the 50-500 is sharper, but it's a lot more expensive too.

That first pic, suitably cropped could make a nice book end for the famous Huntmasters coyote.

triva: did you know that Predator Masters used the HM pic on their home page for a short time until I bitched?
