We've got a Blizzard Warning in the western half of the state, interstate closed because of snow, blowing snow and Tornado Warnings in the Eastern half, hail, high winds etc.
Strange indeed!!

Strange indeed. Started snowing here around 7 this morning and just quit. Wet heavy stuff. Couldn't make it up the drive in 4 wheel drive and had to park at the shop and walk. They are calling for 70's all next week. LOL

I have been hearing rumors of a cold, wet winter. What you guys have going on combined with the phenomenon that we haven't had a 100 degree day in over a week lends credence to the theory. Keep your powder dry.

It seems wierd you guys in the plains are getting hit with snow so early ?
We had a bitch of a summer here, then WHAM ! a few weeks ago we went from summer to fall ? 90's high 80's to 60's and 50's. Not real cold @ night though, think it was 40 this morning.
Lots of rain lately, we needed it though

A good 18 inches here on the level. Heavy and wet. Trees down everywhere. Power lines in places. We have a hunter from GA. stuck here and talking to other outfitters more of the same. Nobody going anywhere around here for a day or so.

And it was 92 degrees on the eastern side (or, asshole side for Booger), of Kansas this afternoon. Winds blowing like crazy! Cold front showing up now. It's supposed to storm hard tonight. Putting on one heck of a light show out there right now.

Not to often you can drive a little more than an hour west an be in a blizzard or go two hours east and be in a tornado.

We used to get a damned good snow by the first two weeks of October in northern California. Coincided with opening of the X6 mule deer season and very decent hunting conditions. So, of course, they changed it.

Earliest snow here was in Oct. on Halloween. Snow lasted about a week.. Pretty normal summer here with only a few weeks of high temp.s and a lot of high humidity. Been lucky as far as work goes the storms that move in either go farther north or south of the job site. There is a county close to where I'm working which had a hell of a wet spring, only about 60% of the crops got planted. North East Iowa had it just as bad. May be a good time to invest in corn/soybean futures.
I heard from one of the guys at work the other day that Pierre S.D. is expected to get 6' total snow fall this year.. ![[Eek!]](eek.gif) [ October 04, 2013, 07:41 PM: Message edited by: TA17Rem ]

Swim trunks & flip-flops are still the uniform of the day down here, but it did get so cold the other morning that I put on a t-shirt. Still hard to get my mind around splitting firewood, but it's coming.

Had other friends snowed in at a hunting camp back in the hills, so a buddy put his tracks on a ranger to get some fuel to them. He called shortly thereafter also stuck, so I had to put my tracks on my Can Am to go rescue the rescuers. That was after 4 hours of digging out dog pens and plowing roads. Just got back in the house. Long day. And to top it off we never got in to the other guys, so I'm sure that will be first on the agenda in the morning. Then the next day there are new hunters coming in to play in the mud and snow.

Cal, look on the bright side. I can assure you, somewhere down the road, you will talk about bad weather with something approaching affection.
Some of the most memorable events, some of the fondest memories involve really bad weather. And, overcoming Mother Nature.
I can go back to the worst winter to hit Germany in January 1961. The maneuver was called "WINTERSHIELD II" and it was epic. Everybody that was there remembers it, but they seldom curse it. People that weren't there have sure as hell heard of it.
Bad weather is such a challenge, but when it's gone, there is a sort of pride of beating the elements. I remember driving 400 miles with broken linkage on the windshield wipers, in a pouring rain with several hundred pounds of mud, exterior and undercarriage. But we had to make a check in. With a couple pieces of wire, we pulled the wipers back and forth, it was insane, but you just accept it, the challenge.
But, at the time, cold and wet are no fun.
Good hunting. El Bee

This blizzard out west is being called one of the worst in SD history.
By Dupree a reported loss of 200 head off one herd and cattle scattered all over hell. Power out, roofs collapsed, up to 4 foot of snow in some places. 60 mph winds for close to 48 hours.
National guard called out. Now there talking floods with 60 to 70 degree temps.
Strange indeed! It will never make national news either. [ October 06, 2013, 08:37 PM: Message edited by: Randy Roede ]

I was at Cal's Thursday morning. Took off through SD and hit the rains about mid state. Drove all the way to the East side in some nasty stuff. Turned and headed south. We stayed just ahead of the nasty stuff all the way to southern KS.
Good trip but was all most too late leaving.
Hope ya'll get back to normal soon

I heard numerous reports from the western third of the state about dead cattle today. May be as high as 100,000 head lost in the storm.
There are some gruesome pics of massive deadpiles starting to surface.
