We got the call that the DNA results came back on the animal I posted this spring. It is indeed a Grey Wolf from the Great Lakes Region stran. That makes it the first confirmed wolf in Ky. The officer I spoke with was with the Dept. of the Interior, and he said he didn't know if fish and wildlife would go public or not.

A Great Lakes Wolf was caught by dog hunters in Trego County, Kansas in December of '12.
It had been running around south of Wakeeney, Kansas for a couple of years before one of the local guys turned his dogs out after thinking it was a honking big coyote.
It was pretty well kicking the dogs asses before he ended the fight. I think it had pretty well taken care of whipping 5 or 6 greyhounds. I had the chance of being able to talk to a guy that knew the guy that caught it.
It weighed close to 85 pounds. The US Fish and Wildlife guys took it and confirmed it to was a wolf. If they handle it like they did here, they did do a news release and confirm it was a Great Lakes Wolf.
Here is a link to a story in the Topeka paper:

The lady I spoke with when it was shot was really nice and didn't just shrug it off. She was really interested and got the ball rolling. I'm gonna call her as soon as she gets back from vacation in a couple weeks. Her name is Laura Patton and I don't think she will have a problem going public, it's not like we're claiming that there's packs running around here. Thanks for the link, by the way.

Another wolf from the Great Lakes Region, in this case, the UP of Michigan, was killed in Missouri a few years ago. That's one less to deal with.
