Every few years I have a friend come and demonstrate taxidermy for my art students. I consider it a unique three dimensional art form, and the students love it. That, and I'm always striving to bring something to my students that they might not get in other school's art programs. In addition to taxidermy I have have guest artists teach glass blowing, mosaics, airbrush, pottery, leatherwork, photograhy, and printmaking. Never a dull moment in the art room.
Here is a deer form getting prepared to accept the cape.
This year he mounted a couple rare birds from South America and a whitetail buck. The ducks are Brazilian Teal (male and female). It is very likely my student's would never see such rare ducks in real life.
Working on the deer. Have the hide on and making sure everything will fit.
Critters up and drying. Will paint and finish them later this week. It has been great watching the enthusiasm in my student’s eyes as they watched these mounts evolve before them. It's been a ton of fun. Oh, and by the way, the buck was killed by one of my students. It was her first, and she got it when she was 12 years old.

Totally cool!!!! In the unlikely event that I ever have another deer mounted, I'll have one assembled with either bear or mt. lion jaws in an open mouth, cat eyes & a set of jet black antlers that I have set aside for the project. Yeah, I'm weird, but it's the voices in my head's fault. ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)

Going through school I had a few teachers that made a difference , Troy I think you are like them. Great job on giving them a complete education.

Thanks guys. Even after 22 years I still really enjoy teaching and trying to bring new things to my students. Makes it fun for them, and it's pretty darn fun for me as well.

Well since you mentioned it first.. The wings are off as well as the tail feathers, body and the flow of the neck to head seems about right.. In flight the tail feathers should be tucked in more and open when they are about to land.. Its still a good mount for anyone that's not sure of what they are looking at.. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

I really can't believe you just said that but as a matter of fact most birds when they bank as these birds are doing they do have their tail feathers splaid out it's their rudders.

Sorry gents, I don't claim to be a taxidermist but what I do know of them each specializes in certain animals, Fish, birds, big game, African game.. Sure some can do it all but they also lack in quality and any that are real good at doing most are very far and few. I know around here if you go into a taxidermy studio you will see anywhere from 2-3 doing the mounts and each one doing what he is best at... I've been around ducks most of my life and one of the first animals I learned to call in over a flock of decoys. If the duck mounts look good to you great, your in titled to you opinion and I mine... Like I said it looks good enough but would be lying if I said it looked great...Later....

Considering this taxidermist speacilizes in birds, and has won the National Championship in taxidermy for birds several times, I'm sure he will find Tim's comments as valuable as the rest of us have. Okay Dimmy it's time for you to go back to playing with your See and Say in order to up your level of knowledge.
