My hunting partner shot what he thought was a coyote. Difference is she is 32 inches tall and weighs 73 pounds. I'm 5'10 and when I held her up by the back legs, she was 6 onches above my head. I called a wildlife biologist with fish and game and they're gonna take a look at her tomorrow. Meanwhile she in in a freezer at the amish processing building. We aren't supposed to have wolves here, but if she is not I'm fooled. I have pictures but can't download them. But if you want I can text them, just give me a number. Been a long time; hope everybodys well!

A few years back, one of the collared wolves released in the UP of Michigan was killed in Missouri. Apparently, they do like to travel a bit. It's too bad that all of the wolves didn't hit the road.
From the link below: "One radio-collared U.P. wolf was killed in Missouri, 470 miles from home territory."

I 've been hunting coyotes here since 1980 and I haven't seen anything that even comes close in size to her. Coyotes do tend to be bigger here and I've taken some at 45 to 50 pounds but, nothing close to 73 pounds. We weighed her on deer scales and then took her to the salvage yard and weighed her there to be sure . I spoke to the biologist about possible migration and he said if she turns out to be wolf, she was probaly imported. They said that about coyotes when I was 14 and they just started to appear here. Their first reaction was; if they are indeed coyotes, they've been imported, most likely by fox hunters because fox are beginning to get scarce. Meanwhile fox hunters were complaining about dogs being attackef while hunting. Now the're so numerous that we have open season and they are considering night hunting with lights this fall.one thing is for sure she is not coydog. I've killed my share of those. Every one showed some dog features mostly in ears or tail. I compaired her to every picture that I could find of a wolf and she looks exactly like them, feature for feature.

Not that far from Florida or what ever state that was that released Red wolves into the wild. Also is'nt there a women somewhere down that way that breeds coyote/dog crosses. Don't have the Link anymore but she had some coy/dogs that could pass for a wolf.

I've never heard of her Tim but there might be. This thing looks like a coyote color wise except its huge. The biggest coyote on record that I could find was 60 pounds.

Or this one.

Depends on what you cross a coyote with but you can get some big crosses with some resembleing wolves.

It's a big critter, but the main thing lacking is the feet. Coyote, coy-dog, hybrid, don't know, but not a northern wolf. Maybe a red wolf? Don't know. We don't have those up here.

Well, I agree that the feet aren't like a full grown male, maybe a full grown female, I don't know? But, a big wolf has incredibly large paws, makes a coyote look like a friigin' kit fox, in comparison.
But, in chasing a few woofs, here and there, I was also made aware that they come in all sizes, in the pack.
Good hunting. El Bee

The head is'nt as blocky as a northern wolf and does'nt look like it has any dog in it.. Maybe some redwolf blood in it though.. Is'nt that what a red wolf is, just a big coyote....

hard to tell from that pic but a wolfs head is more blunt and box like , that critter has a coyote elongated snout or so it appears. (edit for clairity) [ March 19, 2013, 03:42 PM: Message edited by: Paul Melching ]

Well, a few observations aside, it's hard to ignore the size. I have never seen a coyote that big, and it does not look like any coydog I have ever seen.

I believe he said it was female? Not sure, but I couldn't argue with a year old animal not quite full grown.
1) Doesn't look like a coydog, to me.
2) Far too large for a coyote.
3) that kinda leaves a juvenile wolf, if you ask me?

edit too add: young female our wolves here in MN don't seem to get huge like the alaskan type. they appear more streamline than the pics/movies i see of the western type. heres an adult male i trapped (and released)Tim while trapping coyotes. i'd quess he was 85-95 lbs. they are mean SOB's. and they don't shut up he chewed through a 3/8 rope in about 10 seconds. he did not have the big blocky head that we're used to seeing on t.v. notice the long legs, just like in the picture from the op. i've been close and personal with a few of them and this is what our MN wolves look like.
