Looked outside when I got up this morning and some sort of white crap was all over everything. Turns out it's something ppl who live where precipitation falls call "snow". First appreciable precipitation we've had in six months. Winds are howling and none of it is sticking to the ground, but it'll be wet where the drifts form.. If you're east of me, tie down the lawn chairs. Winds been blowing up to 50 mph all night.

I love it!! Roads were horrible and cars in the ditch every where here. Hoping we get a good little blanket that stays a few days!

Pass a bunch this way. The vehicle thermometer hit -42ºF on the way in this morning. It too is a dry cold....go figure...I'm not complaining though, I'd rather deal with the cold than traffic and crowds.

Juat got back from JC. Took the wife to an appointment. She probably drives better in this than most as she learned to drive in Montana and Colorado. A few vehicles in the median and one had just got there. Wheels spinning going no where as she tried valiantly to get unstuck. She'd blew past me several minutes earlier. When a 4WD pickup isn't going more than 50, you take the hint stupid little Mustang convertible. LOL It did what I figured it would do. That short period of rain on warm pavement just vreated a quretr-inch layer of ice for the 2 inches of snow to sit on. 45 mph winds all night didn't help. Not a single critter out going either way. I noted coming home though that the cattle are getting out so I'm gonna grab a rifle and the "crew" and go see if any of the problem children are out and about.

Most here just sit at home till the sanding trucks get out. I just stick to the gravel roads and if you know where the problem children hang out it makes for some easey hunting with or without a crew...

Shit. I thought only people in Southern California didn't know how to drive in inclement weather? Pouring down rain, has no effect on the speed of traffic, or the lane changers.
I remember driving I-10 at 3 a.m. once, 2nd lane and a BMW went by me like I was standing still. There is a stretch of the fast lane right before Kellogg Hill where the water accumulates in the fast lane. Most locals are well aware of this. I didn't see it happen because of the visibility but had all I could do to avoid the asshole. I "thought" I did but hit something and it was very loud, I mean unbelievably loud, and had to pull over.
Crawling under the Honda I had a VERY hard time kicking either a wiper fluid or a radiator overflow vessel that was lodged under the axle. Holy shit did that thing make a noise! I kicked it out of there with GREAT difficulty and got sopping wet doing it.
I looked around and there were a couple other cars pulled over but the Beamer was stacked up against the center divider, sideways. It was starting to get dangerous so I got the hell out of there.
I bet he never figured out why that happened, totally blameless, of course. I'm pretty sure owning a Beamer entitles the owner to drive at least 20MPH over the speed limit, maybe more?
So Cal drivers are pretty good, normally. But at the first rain, forget it. Going up over the Grapevine when it's snowing, they cannot deal with conditions. Usually, an inch of snow and the CHP closes it down.
Good to hear that people in flyover country get stupid, too!
Good hunting. El Bee

The following will make sense to Leonard; hopefully others, too.
I was deer hunting once up above the Grapevine off of the Old Ridge Route. Snow was starting to get bad so I thought I'd head home. Came off the Ridge Route up near Quail Lake, caught the connector & headed south on I-5 in 4 wheel high. Absolutely beautiful. Not even another tire mark in the snow. Everything was white with the fresh snow. The CB (remember those??) told me what was going on and I took my time enjoying the drive. I get down to Castaic where the freeway is closed and am spotted by CHP, one of whom crosses the median to pull me over. He was rather upset that I was on his closed freeway and wanted to know where I came from. I told him "Ohio 'bout forty years ago" & he really got pissed. Seems it's illegal to drive on a closed freeway even if you don't know it's closed. About that time an older officer showed up, we had a nice chat & most of us parted as friends.

Yes, I know that exact location. That was where I saw my first bobcat, I think there is a ranger station just past the Quail Lake turnoff? But I was just down the old road a short ways when it sprinted across in front of me...and my 22. Never saw him again.
Please God, save us from gungho young law enforcement officers when you get the chance.
Good hunting. Lima Bravo
edit: you can't do more than look down the canyons on that stretch of road and hauling a deer back up to the road can be a chore. Ask me how I know. [ December 20, 2012, 02:28 PM: Message edited by: Leonard ]

That whole area has changed big time in the last decade or so. Tejon Ranch is now all about high dollar hunting leases and Forest Service has gated damn near all of the roads on public land. Sad state of affairs.
