Anybody here know anything about calling bears??
I just got back from up on the mountain behind the house. Spent some time cold calling in the timber with mixed results.
Are decoys worth the trouble??
Would a yearling bear be intimidated by using bear urine & other secret herbs & spices as mist??
What do you do when the bear hangs up in the ferns, 40 yards away and won't come into the open for a clear shot?? (Archery).
If you know that a bear worked the stand but didn't come in, would it be worth while sitting for a while after the call is shut off??
I'm so confused.................

We have a couple of bear men lurking around here. I'm pretty sure they could help.

Good hunting. Lima Bravo

can't give ya any real life experience as i don't call them but i have done quite a bit of reading about those that do and the main theme seems to be call continually with no breaks and give em plenty of time. fawn distress seems to be the sound of choice. i did call in a dandy 2 years ago while calling coyotes. he came quite close but would not crosss the river . he was really aggitated. i started with the bunny blues and than switched to fawn disstress.
small bear are quite timid. watched a mature whitetail doe charge hard a smaller bear that came into an oak that was dropping acorns. he ran from her like a cartoon charicter. (several times). from what i've studied, if your gonna call bear, it will most likly be a bigger (older) one that comes in.
good luck.
i'm heading out in the morning for our annual bear hunt. gpt 1000 lbs of doughnuts in the truck [Big Grin]

I called in around six last year calling coyote at night. They came in to pup distress, Cal's cottontail, and DSG cottontail.

Steve Craig told me a couple times that bear cub distress and bear bawls works well along with fawn distress..
Oh wait!! They won't do you any good, you don't have a WT E-caller.. [Wink]

Yeah I suppose if all I was calling to was just pups of the year then sure I could possably get by with a 416 or just a couple of hand calls... [Wink] [Razz]

(Sigh)............Ok, Tim; go back to the top and read the header again. I'm currently calling `Bears`.
Think great big shaggy coyotes with black coats, kinda goofy looking ears and a short tail. Now think even more big & a bad attitude. Next, lose the hat, tie, & pic-a-nic basket.
Then, when one does come in to <40 yards and you're holding a bow and a pointed stick, you'll realize that your brain can scream "HOLY SHIT" louder than ANY electro-Caller ever made.
That's what little I know about calling bears.
It's kinda cool.
I'm going back.
And yes, I'm taking mouth calls & a FoxPro.
[Eek!]

Like I also said when I answered your question.. Steve C. does well with bear vocals and fawn distress... Some areas are not populated with alot of bears so you may want to stick with the E-caller or your lips will be blue by the end of the day..
Anyway keep us up-dated on your little venture and if F-P vocals are'nt up to par I could possably get some for you from actual bears that live just down the road from me. [Eek!]

Edit to add: I do know what bears look like..

That's a BEAR????
I got Gila Monsters in my yard that are that big.
C'mon Tim, I KNOW you can do better than that. [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

As far as density's go, I made about 20 stands and called in a bear on two of them, so I'm pretty satisfied with the numbers. If I stay in the thick stuff and avoid the open areas, I think (hope) that the numbers hold.
One came in to the FoxPro JackRabbit and the other to a Weems Dual Tone replica that Dan Thompson made for me.

I've been out of town and it is kinda hard responding with a droid. Like 4949, puppy whines and cottontail worked for me. I've called in two by shear dumb luck over the years while calling coyotes. In Phoenix Varmint Callers we have one member that spot and calls bears. He field glasses them up and then uses a mouth call to call them in instead of stalking them. He uses a more raspy sound and stays on the call as much as his lungs allows. He usually looks for high desert country between 4,000 5,000 ft elevation with a good crop of prickley pears. The bears really like the fruit that this cactus produces in late August and early September. This gives him a visual advantage since this type of country is more open. Koko also knows this member, Eddie M.

Yeah, I know Eddie; He kicks my ass in calling contests on a regular basis. [Big Grin]
I've heard of the `bears in the pears` but it's sooooooo much nicer up in the pines in Aug. & Sept.
I'm kind of suprised about the puppy whines. I've always heard that the deeper fawn bleats were the way to go, but I'll keep it in mind for future use.
I'm considering this whole adventure as a learning curve........or maybe a learning roller-coaster.

I'm no expert but I've called enough bears to have some confidence. Steve Craig is good at it as is a Montana hunter on 24hourcampfire, Mark Dobrenski.

My bona fides: I've successfully called bears cold in an area with lots of sign, called them near a bait stand no longer being used, called them closer after spotting them, and called a few back that had taken off, or called spooked bears and held their attention long enough for a bow hunter partner to sneak closer and shoot him.

I've called more with a low raspy Weems Wild Call than anything else, but called one to within 12 feet with only a lip squeek.

They say to call continously but before anybody told me that I called six or 8 with intermittent calling: 15 seconds of sound with a minute of silence. With an electronic, I tend to let it run, usually with a mix of bear cub bawls and lower toned prey sounds, and sometimes one or the other with no mix.

Set up seems important: bears are generally nose dominant and given time, want to smell the source of the sound.

Some bears run in, some sneak in, one climbed a nearby tree to look over the brush at me, one appeared to ignore me but over a 20 minute time span gradually fed from over 200 yards away to within 75. Some simply do not come to the call, and seem kind of erratic in response. Inconsistent response from a called animal usually means callers haven't figured them out well enough yet.

I stay 45 minutes or intend to usually. Most have come within 20 minutes and the lip squeeked one arrived at a run within 30 seconds. I've never shot a called bear for various reasons. Sometimes called bears are hard to judge size because they may be hiding in brush, etc. Two bow hunters have shot bears I've called, and my nephew followed hand signals to stalk and kill a huge old boar that was feeding in a loaded huckleberry patch. That bear would not leave the berries to come to the call though he would look longingly toward us once in awhile.

Sounds to me like you're doing well. I do like to call on fresh sign.
