As if I don't have enough on my plate right now with a new dog that's as smart as an anvil & twice as hard headed, I stopped at a yard sale this last week-end & scored on a really nice 80 gal. aquarium. Since I've been without a tank for too long & the price was too good to pass up, I bought it after much inspection.
Getting it set up & unpacking my pumps and filters and such. It's now 1/3 full of water & everything looks good, so far. Can't wait to have fish in it.
While filling the tank, I did get to wondering;
Why doesn't water burn???
Seriously......water = H2O. Hydrogen & Oxygen. Not the stuff to have around open flames. Water `should` burn like gasoline & acetone.
And yes, I know that gasoline doesn't burn, the vapor is what burns. Therefore, boiling water should not only burn, but quite possibly be explosive.
I'm confused; somebody want to 'splain this to me??

I'm unfamiliar with the technical term; "burn".

Posted by JD (Member # 768) on May 15, 2012, 06:59 PM:
It takes 3 things to have a fire
1 Fuel source
2 oxygen
3 heat
Eliminate any one of the three and there will be no fire. Water is not oxygen nor is it hydrogen and as a liquid it just so happens to work perfectly for cooling a fire out.
Posted by Jrbhunter (Member # 459) on May 15, 2012, 07:11 PM:
The only reason water doesn't burn is... it's already burnt. When hydrogen reacts (burns) to oxygen the result is.... water.
Question of tomorrow: Which comes first, Ammonia or Nitrates
(Inside joke for aquarium enthusiasts)
Posted by Cdog911 (Member # 7) on May 16, 2012, 04:59 AM:
To clarify JRB's point, burning is technically a rapid form of oxidation.
To clarify JD's point, water puts out fire by absorbing heat faster than the oxidation process can produce it. I don't recall the specific numbers, but it takes "X" number of joules to absorb one British Thermal Unit (BTU) of heat which is defined as the amount of heat it takes to raise one pound of water one degree fahrenheit. For the sake of discussion, it takes 211 "X" to raise that pound of water from 0 degrees Fahrenheit to 211 degrees F, but in order to reach the magical 212 degree F from 211 degrees and convert that water to steam, water's gaseous state, it takes, like, 540X, which is why firefighters are trained to introduce just enough water to a fire to convert it to steam and not more than that thus allowing the steam to extinguish the fire because of the rapid absorption of heat energy during that liquid to solid conversion. Putting more water on a fire than what is converted to steam is unnecessary, wastes water, and causes water damage.
Wow, surprised that I could recall that. My brain hurts.

Ok.............
`To build a fire` (one of Jack London's best) we need;
Fuel...........Water has hydrogen.
Oxygen.........Water has that.
Heat...........
Obviously a Zippo lighter isn't going to be up to the job, however, would it be possible to introduce enough intense heat to break the water down into it's component parts & ignite it??
Ok, gotta go...........the dog wants a belly rub; must not anger the dog.

Don't let them fool you koko, they can burn water. The big oil companies have put a lid on the technology, and I'm pretty sure Kelly and his buddies at haliburton played a role!!!LOL
Seriously, if I remember correctly, the only way to break down the water molocule and utilize the hydrogen is by adding a carbon based compound(don't remember which one). Heat is required and co2 is a byproduct, other than that, I don't remember much from chemistry other than what my professor looked like in her bikini.....oh wait, I think that part was a dream. Hell I'm not sure it all wasn't a dream.

LOL...what a crew, Koko, if only it were so easy to separate elements.
Lance, I believe we both learned this stuff from the same book.
Next camping trip Ima try and build a fire by rubbing some water together....I'll keep you posted.

All of this under utilized brain stuff is awesomeness. Lance has doubled down on his jujubees with the Postal Service, and works for idiots. It don't get much better, or does it?
Then we have Geordie utilizing his impressive education to build trailer hitches? It's like the Black Mantra; The MAN is holding us whitey's down! Let's see, only different? All this talent wasted on the coyote drug, worse than cocaine.
What, no ornithologist openings on Craig's List?

I'm in the same boat as Geordie. May have the degree but the job I'm educated for doesn't pay for chit. My degree covers a hole on the wall.

Can't tell you much about water other than humans need it to survive and fish love it enough to make there home in it. Carry on.
Oh! Leonard its heavey construction, which consists mostly of moveing dirt (top soil, varis clays and aggregates, some demo.)
Posted by knockemdown (Member # 3588) on May 17, 2012, 06:39 AM:
Geordie, I think them H20 engines utilize an electical charge to first break apart the pair bonds of water , leaving H+ and O- particles to combust.
The dilemma is that there is more energy used by the batteries to break down & combust the h20 than what is available to "burn" after it's broken into hydrogen and oxygen ions. So, in essence, an electric car will put that electrical energy to better use by driving a motor directly...
Newton's Law of the Conservation of Energy cannot be broken, even by Haliburton
I'll go back to playing with garbage now...

In my never ending quest to nudge things along, this from just today's news.
1) http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-05-17/dog-bite-insurance-claims/55037444/1
2) Two weeks ago, I had a little black dachshund nip the back of my calf. One of the owner's neighbors "saw the whole thing" and asked me to call it in because the dog had bitten several of them over the two weeks prior and was a general nuisance. That night, about 11:00, that little bastard ran out the door and sunk its teeth into a little girl across the street. Dog taken by police. Owner agreed to have it put down and got rid of her second dog which wasn't much better.
3) First "loop" on my route. About the second day I was on this route 9 months ago, I saw a big black german shepard in the front yard of one of the customer's homes. I stayed back and waited for them to take it back inside. After about ten days of this same delay, day after day, I finally caught up to the owner and explained to her my concerns. Same response, "Oh don't worry. He's all bark. Big pansy."
Yep, two nights ago, one of their neighbors was walking up the street from a visit with another of their neighbors and that dog attacked her, sending her to the hospital. Dog is in local vet clinic awaiting judge's ruling. If history is any indicator, he's dead dog walking. Owner is military.
There. That oughtta do it...

Koko,
I went to college in Hays, Kansas. They have a main drag there that used to be gas station after gas station. Back before the EPA regulated gas tanks, regular metal tanks were used. The fuel leaking from all of these tanks literally saturated the groundwater.
The local TV news did a story in 1981 or so showing a homeowner with a back yard well lighting the water on fire from his well. The fire burned for about 20 seconds before going out...guess the moral of the story is that if the groundwater is saturated with enough petrol it will burn????

There you go...........
Now the obama people can `mandate` the auto makers to produce cars that run on water. All you have to do is add enough petrol to the water. Big oil's happy & the Green crowd is happy. We can all feel good about ourselves. Kum-bah-yah!!!!!

I want one of those tame hyenas. I've heard they're great pets if you treat 'em right. It's all about the owner. Good owners make good pets, including crocodiles, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs and bison.

fred that trainer of yours needs to get treated for the mange and buy a coat that fits, man that drives me nuts, people that wear clothes with no use what so ever. why would someone pay money for a coat that just hardly goes below their armpits, by the way fred have you chipped the blade yet?
Posted by the bearhunter (Member # 3552) on May 19, 2012, 03:08 AM:
Koko. have you called in bear before??
did once while calling coyotes. 300 lb chocolate to 20 yards. could have easily shot him but i did not ask the landowner about bear, just coyotes. found out later he was dissapointed i did not shoot.
Posted by JD (Member # 768) on May 19, 2012, 07:55 AM:
That's OK Bear, it's surprising how many people will assume it's OK to shoot anything just because they have permission to coyote hunt, you and I think the same on that matter, never assume anything, always ask.
Posted by Kokopelli (Member # 633) on May 19, 2012, 09:40 AM:
Never called in a bear (that I know of). I've had a couple of cougar (that I know of) come in, including one in Nev. to about 25 yards. Didn't have the Non-Res. tag & had to throw rocks at it to run it off. An awesome experience to say the least.
I'm still trying to get a mental picture of the CDude coming around the corner with a sack of mail & seeing that hyena, & thinking "I'M GONNA NEED A BIGGER CAN OF MACE!!!!!"

Yeah, I have seen hyena's napping on the side of the road. Spotted hyenas, but it was in Kruger National Park, an amazing place, by the way. I highly recommend it, after the hunt itself.
Lochi wouldn't allow me to shoot a brown hyena, if we had called one while hunting caracals and jackals at night since the browns were scarce and there weren't any spotted hyenas in the area we were hunting. I did get a cape fox, as a bonus, never saw a caracal and did okay on jackal.
I did about 9½ days of actual hunting, day and night and 3½ days of Kruger, which was very well worth it, even if the only big five I didn't see was lion. Oops, not true, I never saw a leopard, either? I scored on the "little five", though. They give you a large format pamphlet with photos of every animal in Kruger and you check them off when you find them. It would actually take more like a week to see everything, it's 300 miles from boundary to boundary.
Good hunting. El Bee
edit: PS you do not want to get out of the car, in Kruger or risk getting eaten. I got out once to pick up a tortoise and Nancy about died! I also had a baboon steal a bananna from me inside the car. Lochi freaked!

Ryan, I was planning on taking the edge off on a nasty ol' gobbler's breastbone yesterday!
However, the only thing that got chipped was a friggin' blowdown limb that I centerpunched with a 12 ga. wad about 7ft. from the muzzle. Dad gum it!!! I had the Speedbead right on his eyeball when his head popped up @ 22 yds, but MY eyeball was focused in him, so I figured I was clear to shoot.
ended up, I BONED THE SHOT...

I have not heard from Lochi since Nanc died. I know he moved from his place into town. His place is probably nonexistent, which is a shame. It was a comfortable compound, but probably indefensible.

edit: yes, I really like some of his sounds. Very unique.
