..........or anybody else that shoots a bow; The next time you're in Wally World, check out the `Avengers` poster. It should be near the Stationary Dept. One of the Avenger Dudes is shooting a bow. Nice looking recurve. Other than the bow being held horizontal, the string on the outside of the drawing arm, & a finger hold on the string like I've never seen in 50 years of archery, he looks pretty kool. And with the floating anchor he's using, it's little wonder that his back quiver is empty. ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)

I'll have to check it out. I'll probably google it, don't get to Walmart too much. Nearest one's 20 miles and there's 600 stores in between.

And, why smithers? Is he the bow guru? I didn't know?
Good to see he logs on every week or so.
Good hunting. LB

Why Smithers?? Well, I know that he shoots the pointed stick for one thing and that he would appreciate the humor in some artist's concept of shooting a bow when in fact it's apparent that the artist didn't know a damn thing about archery. It's kind of like the idiots in the movies that shoot handguns sideways 'cause it looks really gangster cool.

Where IS the string?

The poster that I was referring to has the archery hero at full draw. One would think that somebody would spend at least a little bit of time doing research before these things get approved for printing.

It's the artist's 'interpretation' of how one would shoot a bow, lol. The link that Lance posted is evidence of that. Yeah! Where is the string? Maybe he strings it just before shooting? He's being responsible and wouldn't want the string getting caught on his clothes. Kokopelli has a good memory, that's why he remembers that I shoot a bow. I log in 4 times a week but I usually look at the latest and greatest. I'm not usually looking for my screen name to show up.

In the pic C-DOG linked too, the left handed shooter is getting ready to attach an arrow to the invisible string, just rested the arrow on the bows riser then will slide it down to the invisible string and knock set. He's a Super Hero BTW, they are allowed to do that kind of stuff.....
Well, that's my opinion. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I'm glad and relieved that I finally figured out what all the fuss is about. Suspend your disbelief, people; Hope and Change blah blah blah. Same shit, different day.
Now that I know, it worries me what three days smithers has other stuff to do? Riddle me that, Batman? Maybe it's to rest the squirrels in the cage, maybe those are his exercise days in the yard? We really need to get to the bottom of this.
Good hunting. LB

If I allowed avatars, my favorite would be of smithers in the dentist chair with bizarre appliances distorting his features. (assuming, of course) Maybe that's what he looks like and he was depicted while getting his daily botox injections?
Maybe this is actual?

I'm still unsure which days we must soldier on, smithersless, as it were? Are they consecutive or alternating or even/odd dates or darts on a calendar? I like to plan ahead.
I do not believe the rumor having him on a recent RSVP cruise with Heath. It just looks a bit like them having a good time in the conga line.
Good hunting. LB

I don't see anything wrong with that picture, that's exactly how I shoot my bow when I'm cruising through the hood wit my homies. It would make a better gangsta bow if it were nickle plated.

That picture was a beauty, LB. I still have it somewhere I'm sure. I was getting a root canal at the time. I have been absent from all boards for a little bit. There's only so much shit I can spew in a month.
I've seen my share of shitty shooters. There's about two different ways you can shoot a bow effectively. When you try and fancy it up, the shit hits the fan and arrows end up through people's hands and heads. [ April 29, 2012, 02:20 PM: Message edited by: Chris S ]

Koko, I was just talkin smack, I'm very traditional and straight forward in my shooting style and technique. I used to shoot with a competition shooter and he chewed my ass one day when we were practicing, I made a simple mistake and shrugged it off with a comment about how we were JUST practicing, he informed me that he wasn't wasting another second trying to teach me if I didn't change my attitude about practice, some people say that practice makes perfect, his motto was "PERFECT practice makes perfect". He was anal about practice but that guy could consistently put a quiver full of carbon arrows in the same hole, that is every arrow touching. I suppose I'm one of his failures, I can hit a squirrel at 35 yds, he would say that I should be able to blind a squirrel at that close distance. Come to think of it.....I hate that guy.

I can understand your shooting buddy's attitude toward practice...............but forgetting to have fun will cause burn-out eventually. When I lived in So. Cal I shot with a pretty good group that included a guy by the name of Cal Vogt. He won the National in Bowhunter Div. a few times. We took our shooting and razzing each other seriously. I learned quite a bit shooting with that bunch. When I moved away, I was competing in A Class in Bowhunter, Bowhunter Freestyle Limited or Traditional. Not a big deal, but I never owned a tournament bow; all my shooting was done with my hunting equipment. I actually won my division one time at an American Round with a 92# compound. Good times!!! I mainly just shoot the recurve now, getting ready for bear season. When I see something as screwed up as that Wally World poster, it just makes me shake my head.
Now you guys have got me to thinking; how many ways ARE there to shoot a bow??? (1) English Style with split finger release. (2) Apache Style with three fingers under. (3) Japanese style with thumb release. (4) Ishi Style with bow held horizontal. (5) Modern Style with or with out mechanical release.
'Bout all I can think of at the moment. I'm not counting those flight shooting guys that shoot with their feet.

Do you use a mechanical release? or fingers? I use a simple trigger pull, this guy I was talking about used what I call a tension release, not sure what the proper term is but I know you can bust your own nose learning how to use one, I'll stick with the trigger.

I shoot strictly with fingers. The few times that I tried a release, it was with too much poundage to learn with and I about put my nose over by my right ear. It's hard to look cool with your nose on sideways. I play around with a thumb ring once in a while when shooting a Mongolian Recurve reproduction that I have, but it's more for the novelty of it than anything else. I've found that when it comes to my archery gear for hunting, simple is good.......therefore, very simple is very good.

I have heard that the average life of an archery affectionado, from inception to burnout is five years. Yes, no?
Good hunting. LB
PS, I won the Gold Medal for Archery at Club Med a few years ago. A man wouldn't lie about something like that.

Well, I guess I'm not average; I've been shooting for 5 decades. Currently have a nice practice area that goes back to 90 yards & am putting in a sandpit with 3D broadhead targets. I mainly just compete against myself these days & work on perfect practice. Archery bear season will be here soon!!!!!

About how many archery coyotes, lifetime? I knew two archery nuts, Ken Miller and Swede Swensen. Swede had quite a few CVCA medals for archery bobcat, fox and coyote. Very impressive.

I've taken 4 coyotes with a bow. 3 calling (daylight) & 1 still-hunting. Many misses. I hunt coyotes with a bow now when the fur market is way down & I don't really want to have to skin much.
