Had lunch last weekend in Salina, KS in a restaurant that has rock n roll memorabilia. They happen to have an original playbill from the last gig Buddy Holly did on February 2, 1959 in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Just jogged my memory that tomorrow is the anniversary of his death.
On the FAA's website you can actually read the report of the crash. Looks like they really had a hotshot pilot that thought he was bulletproof and could fly in really shitty weather...guess we all know how that turned out.
One last little tidbit--Buddy had 'discovered' Waylon Jennings and 'ol Waylon was playing backup that night to Buddy. Waylon was supposed to ride with Buddy on the plane, but he got bumped at the last minute by the Big Bopper.
Kind of interesting!

I remember standing around in the student parking lot that particular morning when it was being talked about.
I (of course) knew who Buddy Holly was, and the Big Bopper but Richie Valens was unknown to me, like everybody else.
Damn, was it that long ago, I didn't even have a driver's License, at the time?
You hear a lot about certain recording artists being influenced and many cite Buddy Holly. I think it has a lot to do with dead people being immortalized in large part BECAUSE they died. One group I really liked was the Doors. Same thing, a lot of the fame came about after Morrison died.
Good hunting. LB

I was only nine at the time but remember it very well as my sister went to the same high school as Ritchie Valens it was a big deal.

I was just seven when Buddy Holly died. I heard his music a lot when young and liked it. Leonard, I'm a doors fan too. My wife is even more so. She has read several books on Jim Morrison. I've seen the doors three times way back in the 60s.

LB I always figured you to be an Iron Butterfly kind of guy...
Posted by Locohead (Member # 15) on February 05, 2012, 11:47 PM:
Serious Kelly? I had him pegged as a Lawrence Welk fanatic?!?!
Posted by Kokopelli (Member # 633) on February 06, 2012, 04:40 AM:
Nope,
El Bee traded his Iron Butterfly vinyls to me long ago for some Barry Mannilow stuff that I found at a yard sale. (Cheap). Ball,Heavy & Inna-Gadda-Davida. Serious metal music. The I/B is strictly for nostalgic use only. I'm more of a ZZTop kind of guy. Rio Grand Mud is playing even as I type this.

Loco – LB hides behind that Lawrence Welk ruse, but while driving to and from AZ he has Sabbath playing Iron Man on a steady loop.
yall stay after them

I would bet everything I own that koko would be a ZZ Top kind of guy.
I have said many times, Freddie Mercury and Queen is on that continuous loop when I venture out of state. I usually have three sound tracks loaded, as well. Grease, Dirty Dancing and Rocky Horror, besides Mickey Gilley's greatest hits and a couple Beetles. How many is that?
Good hunting. El Bee

That's funny Leonard because I would of guessed ZZ Top for Koko. No kidding! That boy has no ruses! I can read him like a book!

I actually had the beard before I ever heard of ZZTop. When it was really long, people would cringe watching me shoot the bow, but it was never a problem.
ZZTop Eliminator; Greatest album ever recorded.

ZZ has a lot of good blues/rock tunes, My wife loves it when we're in the car and I pull up ZZ on the Ipod and start singing along, Jesus just left chicago, blue jean blues, waiting for the bus....etc. after about an hour of that she takes it away from me, apparantly she doesn't appreciate me expressing my artistic abilities.

JD;
Take control of the gizmo back & give her some Robert Palmer.
A little `Addicted To Love`, `Simply Irresistible` and `Bad Case Of Loving You` should have her singing along in no time. Remember; it's not how fast you get to where-ever that you'll recall later, it's the strange looks you get from other drivers.
I always thought that it was a shame that Robert Palmer never got together with ZZTop for an album. His style would match up well with the Top's `Gimme All Your Lovin`, `Sharp Dressed Man` & `Legs`. They could have put something truely awesome together.

Yea!!! Not to mention Palmer has those dancers.....you know the ones I'm talking about.
Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on February 06, 2012, 09:25 PM:
Yeah, I know the ones.

Pay attention to the space cadet right next to him over his left shoulder. She doesn't do anything but the facial expressions are simply irresistible.

Leonard,
Sitting here today riding out a blizzard and feeling sorry for myself for not being able to hunt so being a newbie here decided to continue my fun review of the site.
Came across this thread and got the jump start i needed from your Robert Palmer vid.Motivated enuf now to get the tractor going and make sure i'm plowed out for tomorrow.I even sent it on to a bunch of my old cronies that sit around and mope nowadays more than they hunt.If this doesn't motivate and bring back 'the days' for them,I told them to just go ahead and tip over.
No doubt you are responsible for the death of a few coyotes over the next few days.Heck I may even head west with the kid,Bearhunter.
I owe ya.Downpayment attached.

Robert Palmer was awesome. The goth chicks are hot, but I'm more partial to the river nymphs in Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
Heard today that Davy Jones of the Monkeys passed away at age 66. Bad heart.

Richie Valens used to date my Aunt when they would play at the Blue Moon in Dubuque, IA. My mom tells me he had the hots for my aunt and would swoon on her when they where in town.

Saw that this threead had resurrected itself and it got me to thinking. Most ppl believe that the song that included that line - the day the music died - was a tribute to those lost in that plane crash. Not so. Turns out it was a commentary on the political issues of the day, and more in support opf conservative views than liberal, believe it or not. Glenn Beck reviewed the song, line by line, and referenced a bunch of things mentioned in the song to the issues of the day, like Vietnam, etc.. Imagine that.
In college, I played bass in a country band to pay my way. Spent 40-50 weekends a year on the road doing VFW dances, American Legions, weddings and the like. The leader of the band's name was Jim Bunker who played bass after his time in the Army with Waylon, Mel Tillis, and while in the Army, did a short stint with the King, Elvis. We weren't the best band around by any means, but Jim was a helluva showman and people loved him. I learned a lot from him and enjoy some wonderful memories of those weekends.

When we were first married, we lived in a little court of cottages, kinda like a miniature Knott's Landing. There was a single mom down a few doors that was dating Trinny Lopez. Lemon tree is very pretty, etc. Didn't impress me very much, at the time.
Actually, I think Ritchie Valens was from somewhere out here, like the San Fernando Valley or something?
Good hunting. LB

My mom went to school with Richard Petty and lived two house down the street from him..
I used to go out to Sioux falls every spring to one of the big gun shows that was held yearly..
I met a guy that was helping out at one of the gun dealers tables..We chatted for some time about Winchester rifles and black powder cartridge rifles and I showed him a rifle I was carrying around that I just bought earlier a B-78 single shot.. Just as I was getting ready to leave he asked me my name and I told him who I was and then he told me who he was... Hank Williams JR...LOL
I visited with him about 3 more years after that then i stopped going to the shows. I wonder if he still shows up every year yet..
I liked him he was dam nice guy and loved to talk about rifles....

My nephew passed on a chance to bang Tanya Tucker about 20 years ago. He was prolly 18 or 19 at the time and she was about 35. We still give him shit about it when we're getting our drink on around the campfire now and then.
I don't have any cool stories, so I borrowed his.
Posted by Kokopelli (Member # 633) on March 01, 2012, 08:32 AM:
Ah yes, the lovely Tanya Tucker. Good ol' Glen Campbell got her when she was young, turned her on to drugs, rode her hard & put her away wet. Then he dumped her in the gutter and went off and recorded a gospel album. What a swell guy.
