I first asked myself this question many moons ago while on patrol duty when we were checking one of the local businesses late at night. There was a Pepsi machine sitting out front and it was easily between 0 and 10 above zero and I asked my partner if he knew how they kept the pop in those machines from freezing up. We presumed there must be some kind of heater in there but I later had the chance to look at the innards of one and all there is, is cooling stuff. So, this evening, I was out in the shop and opened the small fridge I keep out there to hold pop, beer, whatever. It's been between 10 and 32 degrees for the past several days and my shop isn't heated. Everything in the fridge was cool, but not cold. WTF?!? Makes you go Hmmmmmm.

I have camped at higher elevations in the Rockies enough to know that an ice chest will keep it's contents from freezing or even getting cold by a process called insulation. In other words, we would purposely open the ice chests at night and close them in the morning, in order to get the contents nice and cold, and keep then that way for the next day.
So, a coke machine protects the contents from getting warm, and accidentally, also protects the bottles or cans from freezing and bursting. Indeed, one of life's mysteries.

Tell me more about this "insulation" you speak of. Smart ass. LOL
Yeah, I'm aware of that.. I'm talking about over a long period of time. Days, weeks, eons, and the like. Those pop machines are kinda insulated, but they aren't so well set up as to keep sub-zero temps out for the entire month of January, yet no bottles burst. THAT'S the mystery. Is there a warming mechanism in there to keep them a degree or three above freezing, or what?

You want a mystery............figure this out;
We take a glass, put in sugar to make the drink sweet, lemon to make it sour, gin to warm it up and ice to make us cool. Then we say "Here's to you" and drink it ourselves. ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)

Cdog, mebbeso it's all those little carbonation bubbles jumping around inside that keeps it from freezing up??
Koko, good point.
More points: if you're not a disgruntled employee, does that mean you're a gruntled employee?
Why do we say, "Here we go!" You can't go 'here' if you're already 'here'.
There's a sign up in the lobby of my agency that says, "Sexual assault victim's deserve support!". Which means, what? All the other victim's don't? Mebbeso it should say "Victim's deserve support!".
What about the carton that says 'low-fat milk'. Shouldn't the other carton say 'high-fat milk'??
Everywhere I go I see stupid shit and just walk away shaking my head.

Carbonated drinks like Coke, Pepsi etc. will freeze. In mid-northern British Columbia we used to keep ice cream on the porch when we had a party too big to keep all the stuff in the freezer, but we had to keep pop inside or it would freeze, bulge cans, blow up when opened if not totally frozen, etc.
Test it by putting a can of Pepsi in your freezer.
I am also curious as to why your stuff does not freeze inside a refrigerator exposed to prolonged deep cold. It would if you shut off the power, within a few days. Passive insulation only slows the process. As Leonard said, maybe the thermostat works both ways, keeping the temp up if it gets too low, functioning like a heat pump, though you wouldn't think they would put that much effort into designing a fridge that warmed stuff on the rare occasions when that feature would be needed.
Curious. We need a refrigeration expert. [ December 07, 2011, 10:18 PM: Message edited by: Okanagan ]

The cooling system in a pop machine will only get the pop so cold, it wont freeze it, so essentially the machine is acting as a heater of sorts when the ambient temp is below that of the machines cooling capabilities..... in other words if a pop machine is designed to keep pop at 42 degrees F. ....well......mystery solved.
Heres another mystery.......Obama is president.

I just love how we put our heads together and solve this shit. Including why Del looks the way he does. You make the rest of us look good. (just kidding, you are handsome devil)
Carbonated beverages absolutely will freeze, seen it many times.

I have a refridgerator in my shop for cold beverages in the summertime. I mistakenly left a case of Pepsi in there over a brutal cold snap here last winter. You won't do that twice. Every can froze and broke. Nice mess. Also quite a bit of beer in there and none of it broke open.

Gotta make sure the seal on the door stays pliable or they will leak and allow freezing in extreme cold or not keeping stuff cold when its hot.
Cal's comments prove you need to keep plenty of beer around for emergencies. To hell with soda pop.

That's right, too. I have a big bottle of vodka in my freezer that I have been trying to freeze since last October, and it ain't yet.
My grandson left it there, when he went to Germany. At the rate I'm going, it will still be there when he get's back, but I have tasted it, twice. Keeping it in the freezer is supposed to be very Cosmopolitan.
Back when I was hunting pretty hardcore, we used to have a small bottle of either blackberry or peach brandy for sipping, on those really cold nights. I don't know if it helped, my feet always got cold? But, it was beneficial in some way, I think? Kept me from thinking how stupid it was to stay up all night, hunting coyotes in freezing cold.
What's interesting is that Cal doesn't drink beer all winter.

Pop will feeeze in a pop machine, it just has to stay cold enough outside for a longer period of time for it to happen.. Something to do with the "R" value of the insulation..
My dad use to keep a old fridge in the shop for keeping things from freezeing or getting damp. He installed a bigger lite bulb and fixed the door switch so the lite would stay on all the time provideing heat for the inside...

Exactly LB, Beer is for hot summer days. Pendelton or Crown is for cold winter days (or nights)

CDog, Question. Did that soda machine have a lit face on it? If so, chances are that heat is dumping back into the machine to keep it from freezing. The thermostat in the thing won't kick on until it gets to a set point, so basically the heat from the lights will keep them warm enough to stop freezing to a certain point. When it gets too cold for too long they'll freeze. I've had frozen pop explode syrup all over the place in my truck. Not much is going to not freeze at -40ºF though. Regular motor oil is like thick molasses in those temps. Synthetic is still pourable, which is handy.
Edit: Heaters are installed in them too it appears.

I do believe it did, wookie, and I wondered about that at the time, too.
I will warn you of freezing beer, though. Bought a 12-pack at the nearby c-store one day and apparently, their cooler had malfunctioned and the stuff had been purty near to freezing. Long story less long, it seems that just as the boiling point of alcohol is about 30-degrees under that of water (think "still"), the freezing point of water is well above what it takes to freeze alcohol (re Leonard's whiskey) and if you freeze beer just right, the water in it will freeze into a nice ice ball leaving only the alcohol behind. And when I say alcohol I mean pure grain shit. I grabbed the first can, popped the top and went to down her in one fell swoop (WTF is a fell swoop?!?) THAT'S when I lost my hair.
Gawd, I hate sweet tea.

What is "sweet" tea? Is it the bottled stuff like Lipton or are you talking about hot tea where you add your own sugar?
I don't see why you hate it, just don't drink it, dude! That way you don't have to hate it. Life is too short to drink sweet tea when you hate the stuff. Seems basic? Glad to help.
