My son wanted me to post this pic for Fred, Kelly and Randy R. As they know, he can't blow on a predator call with out it morphing into some kinda duck sound.....lol. Anyway, the orange army still has us surrounded. So, they hit the ponds all day, and had alot of success.

Water retrieve? You know the Yuma trick shot? You time the approach and the trajectory so the duck lands right in your game bag. They perfected it on dove, but it works equally well on watercraft.

PS, seems to me that a lot of these "curs" look suspiciously like mutts? Is this intentional? To keep the crooks from stealing valuable, well bred dogs?

So, Peanut Butter Man, (aka AR) blows a predator call that morphs into a duck call? Wow! His talent is enormous, but he is a fair shot on game. I saw him kill a coyote once that was out of sight, over the top of a hill. How the hell did he do that?

Could be, Leonard!

Leonard, when you're a bumbling spazz on the rifle as I am, you need a fat shifter to grab! plus it's ribbed for my pleasure

Geordie, tell Tommy to quit messin' with them long range whitetails & take Rory out to call him in some coyotes!!!

Okay, looks like you might be a "lefty" all the way around, eh?

Yeah, ribbed even! Non slip. It used to be that you could sell a fisherman anything. Now, it appears coyote hunters have fallen for it?

Just think of all the "must have" items, like $400 replacement stock, 25X scopes, custom barrels and exotic chamberings. Can you imagine being laughed at, with a wood stock and "fixed" power scope below 9X?

Lefty all the way around?? Probably not, but I am left handed, and I think that indicates that I'm in my right mind, no?

Niether the rifle or any of it's components were must have. Never had a full custom before and that's just another item off my bucket list. Not really a coyote rig either, although it does see some use as one. Put it together as a long range toy mostly. Besides, it IS really fuckin' cool.

I have an extra "super kool oversized bolt handle" around here somplace that would look pretty badass on your Middlestead. I'd send it to you for a fair and modest price.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on November 29, 2011, 12:42 PM:

I KNEW I would get a nibble with that comment. No, I don't think being wrong handed automatically makes you a lefty. Besides, it has been well documented that left handed people are extremely creative, very artistic and make excellent interior decorators.

By the way, is that super kool bolt handle for a right sided bolt? I am looking for one that is way bigger than normal, to make a statement. You know?

gh....lb

PS I initially thought that you would boycott HM out of loyalty for your BMF hunting partner. I think it is good you didn't.

El Bee;
I'm thinking that an 8 ball off of a pool table would make a kool bolt handle. Even kooler would be some kind of shifter knob that lights up from an auto parts store. [Big Grin]

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on November 29, 2011, 03:18 PM:

That's been done already, koko. I have a spare mushroom anchor that would make a hell of a statement. Already dipped in red plastic for a positive nonslip surface. Plus, it would close by itself, or maybe a low profile 10" cast iron frying pan? I have a brass chess set, the queen would look very sporty, as would a streamlined ¾X 4" galvanized pipe nipple; form follows function, you know?

Will a gunsmith actually install a super kool bolt handle without me proving that I'm a member of our homeowners association SWAT Team? I know I had to show I.D. when I purchased my elbow and knee pads at BassPro Shops.

In the meantime, the Middlested will not appear in public with an ordinary stock bolt handle. I could not stand the disgrace, I mean shame.....now that I "know" how much it reflects on my ignorance. I want to be kool so bad!

gh....lb

PS you know the gun that really needs it is my M600. A hot load once had me actually BENDING the S bolt handle!

Posted by jimanaz (Member # 3689) on November 29, 2011, 03:53 PM:

Now you're inferring in a backhanded way that lefties are "happy"? You may convince me to boycott after all.

Its ambidextrous and about the same size as the one on my AI. It may have a groove or two cut into it but I'm not going to dig it out unless I feel that you're sincere in your interest, and I'm not feeling that at the moment.

Not sure about any regulations or requirements in your place of residence. I hear you can do it in the garage with a bench grinder and die though, so I guess you could fly under the radar?

We all want to see the Middlestead and you KNOW you sooooo want to be "kool". Take the plunge, don't be skeered. The rest of us cool kids will welcome you.

I got one on the right side, pretty handy when wearing gloves or calling at night.. I don't think I would have one on a rifle shooting anything smaller than a 22-250 size case though, way over kill.. They canbe a pain if you have to have the rifle in a soft-case..

By the way, these boys look like they are second and third in line for the gallows scaffold, judging by their happy faces.

I remember once, up in Bishop, we were walking out dragging a stringer of real nice lunkers on opening day, Eastern Sierra Trout Opener. So, this reporter chick for the local access channel, waiting at the trailhead was asking us how we did, etc. and during the interview, we all looked like we were about to be shot as spies or something equally anticipated. Watching it on the news that afternoon, it was hilarious; our big fifteen minutes of fame and we blew it, looked like captured bank robbers.

Leonard, this short video clip is my .243 shooting @ 550yds on a steel plate. If listen closely, you can hear the impact smack the steel after the bolt cycle is completed. That isn't particularly fast bolt work, but it does show how a big ol' shifter knob can come in handy. The shooter doesn't have to compromise his shooting position to cycle the bolt, so the target remains within the scope's field of view & a faster followup shot can be sent along...

Thanks for sharing, Fred. A stock 243 with a super kool bolt handle? I guess it's legal, in NY, right?

Do I need one of those bipods, as well? I do not own one, hardly ever shoot prone. I have two reasons. First, lying there with ants crawling all over you and stickers everywhere and brushing yourself off will get them stabbed in your hands.

More important is the lack of visibility, not to mention not being able to swing on an animal approaching from a blind spot. Or, is this not a valid concern? I like to sit off the ground, wet muddy or snow, I just don't like rolling in it. Ruins the press in my pant leg and scuffs my shoeshine.

I've been told by someone who assures me that he knows this stuff that there's New Yawk City and the real New Yawk which is rural, hard working and conservative with goodly numbers of hunters, fishermen & trappers.

Makes sense...............you can't judge Colorado by Denver alone or all of Arizona by Phoenix.

You almost had it right, Leonard!

Living on Long Island, it's a wonder I CAN afford one. I enjoyed two years of PB&J lunches to pay for that rifle...it ain't quite a "stock .243" [Wink]

In any event,I am pleased to see you taking the plunge into the world of the tactical precision rifle!!! First inkling was a USO scope & canted base, and now you've got a fat bolt shifter on the way [Smile] Hmmmm, what's next... a McMillan stock w/detachable bottom metal system, perhaps?
Atlas bipod??

Dave, the cards you are seeing are for scoring recognition in NPHA's online predator contest. Every two weeks, a new card is selected at random to keep honest men, honest... [Smile]

Oh please, spare me the wannabe stuff! I was kidding about the knee and elbow pads! And, my homeowners assoc doesn't even have a SWAT Team. I don't HAVE a homeowner's association, nor is my community gated.

We used to call it, in high school: "play the role" now they say, poseur. I think it means the same thing? I'm saving up for one of those whatchamacallit's that slip on the buttstock and holds extree ammo, as long as I'm going "all in".

Fred, I'm unconvinced. Bill OReilly is a neighbor? You are doing okay, maybe right up there with Dan Carey?

LOL, I KNEW I'd get a nibble outta that one [Wink]

Leonard, I know as well as anyone that all of that extraenous stuff isn't necessary to kill coyotes. But it IS fun to play with!

Don't go gettin' all old on me & say you don't sometimes enjoy shooting a rifle for the sheer enjoyment of hitting the target?

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on December 01, 2011, 01:16 PM:

Yeah, maybe. I think the most satisfaction I have had is a few solid hits on coyotes, way out there, in front of witnesses.

I killed a coyote standing on a little hill in front of about ten other deer hunters, in camp, with my 300. Ridiculous distance, and the shouts of amazement, and the long delay in watching him slide down the hill was worth the price of admission. I think I had three two legged bird dogs that retrieved it for me. And, I acted like: Routine, hoohum, I do it all the time. (they probably still talk about it?) lol

Done without a big shifter, I might add.

Posted by knockemdown (Member # 3588) on December 02, 2011, 06:32 AM:

Gotcha, Leonard.
That same satisfaction can be enjoyed by hitting steel plates at ridiculous distances. Best part is, you can hit'em all day long & they don't die!

Which was the point I was attempting to make about these 'tacticool' rifles appointed with big bolt knobs & such.
These rifles are likely built primarily for recreational target shooting, or possibly for use in some form of competitive shooting matches. In any event, it can't be too much of a stretch to think that some dude may want to take that type of rifle along on some stands?

Heck, somewhere along the way, he may realize it don't make a half-bad coyote whacker!!!

gh....lb

Posted by knockemdown (Member # 3588) on December 02, 2011, 01:05 PM:

At a ridiculous distance, yep!

If a coyote is hung up that far, then obviously you didn't call it in. So, in essence, you'd be taking a 'pot shot' at a fixed target. At that point, there's no satisfaction from calling the coyote in close because it's hung up in the next county. For me, the fact that it's a coyote don't make a shit bit'o difference anymore. Connecting on the 1st shot does...

That said, what's harder to hit? A coyote @ 600yds, or a coyote sized steel plate @ 600yds?

What's harder to hit @ 500yds? A coyote or a prairie dog??? At long range, what the target IS doesn't matter as much as what SIZE it is... [Wink]

Again, I'm talking keeping within the context of long-ish shots here, because guys don't build those 'tacticool' rifles to shoot <300yds. With most any flat shooting rifle, a competent rifleman can make those pokes easy as takin' candy from a baby...

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on December 02, 2011, 01:15 PM:

First of all....many of those 500 yard coyotes absolutely WERE called, to begin with. They came in with buddies that got dead and ducked out and eventually offered a shot, way out there.

Hitting a gong compares with dumping a coyote's dick in the dirt? Not speaking the same language, here. One is a game, the other is hunting.

Eh, from a shooter's standpoint, the coyote that left & stopped to look back is still just a stationary target at that point. Whether you are still hunting that animal, or merely just shooting at it is debatable. So I won't go there...

And I will concede that hitting that coyote would get me sufficiently pumped over just ringin' steel at the same distance. And especially so after putting hundreds upon hundreds of rounds downrange at waaaaay further distances & making the most of that shot opportunity...

It's all good, Leonard. I'm not questioning yours, or anyone else's ability as a rifleman. As it goes, I think coyote hunters, by default, are pretty darn good shots & thinkin' any different would be foolhardy! I just don't agree with the implication that some of us clowns with 'tacticool' rifles don't actually know how to drive 'em... [Wink]

You can keep poking fun though, I don't mind [Smile]
