I have very little sympathy for people that shoot others "by mistake".

Really sucks when people do shit like that.
Had a long time family friend get shot and killed while Elk hunting in Montana years ago.
Now with the big push to legalize silencers a hunter will never hear it comeing, (scary)or know what direction the shot came from...

seriously Tim? IF a hunter gets shot, do you really think the hunter will have any idea what direction the shot came from. I mean seriously, the bullet is going to get there before the sound, right? In other words, the bullet strikes before the hunter hears the shot weather fired from a suppressed rifle or not.....Seriously, I can't believe you typed that....

There's going to be hunting accidents for as long as there are hunters. No different than car wreck. If there's a human involved, there will be accidents..Fact is though that hunting is still one of the safest "sports" going with fewer injurys than table tennis, golf, and many others.

Yeah! sure if the first bullet fired hits another hunter, whoopy do. Won't matter.. But what if the first bullet misses, which side of a tree or log are you going to duck behind, which way are you going to turn so the shooter can get a better view of what he is shooting at..If someone is going to be shooting in the woods it wouldbe nice to know where its comeing from so you can avoid them or duck behind the right side of a tree..

Shooting range or varmint hunting fine, big-game hunting with alot of stupid people running around in the woods, NOPE!!
As for hearing loss or prevention try ear plugs, won't make hearing any better but will help save what you have..

What really scares me is the thought of someone haveing one attached to a AR with a 20 round clip...

How many hunting "accidental shootings" involve more than one shot?

I currently wear muffs, and they're a pain in the arse. But thanks for the sound advice.

I lost a big percentage of my hearing while in the military, competing on the Battalion pistol team. The only "ear plugs" we ever thought of were empty 45ACP cases stuck in our ears.

I wear hearing protection at the range, or when sighting in, checking zero in the field.

But, I just can't get used to wearing anything, muffs or plugs while engaged in any type of hunting. Too late for me anyway. I need to hear from which direction they are shooting at me.

Ear muffs are'nt that hard to get used to..
Maybe some day you'll be unlucky enough to hear a bullet pass by then you'll get the picture. [Roll Eyes]

Edit to add: A 12 ga. foster slug and a sabot both have there own distinct sound, that I know personnely...

Any dumb ass who thinks a man in dark clothing resembles a bear needs to be put away for safekeeping. NEVER pull the trigger or even point the rifle at a target you aren't sure of, and NEVER take a shot at anything on a ridge with no background to stop a miss. Like TR said as long as humans are involved, you'll have accidents. Guys like this are some of the hunter's worst enemies with the antis. I feel sorry for the 12 year old grandson being afield with an idiot for a grandfather.

I agree with all that, Al. But what the hell was the guy doing, crawling around in the bushes. Reminds me of those Colorado locals and their "sound shots". I'll never get over that little gem.

Heck Leonard, I don't have a clue what the guy was doing crawling around in the bushes; maybe he lost his favorite pocketknife, but I'll bet he wasn't imitating a bear. I have crawled a good distance to a clear shot on a coyote to break my outline, but I doubt I was imitating anything that ought to be shot by a goofball who doesn't identify his target.

I actually experienced hearing a full grown man say that once. I asked him if he had seen any deer. He said "No, but I got off a couple of SOUND shots". Idiots, idiots everywhere.

A couple of Grand Junction Yahoos I met in the field, one year. I think they were completely serious but I didn't inquire too deeply, ya know? An armed society being a polite society, and all? But, I'm pretty sure I got the gist of it.

I was reading the section of the local paper that has the stuff from "100, 90, 80, etc.. years ago today" and in the late 1940's six people were killed the opening week of hunting season in just one county! Some were gun handling incidents, but several were people shot who were mistaken for elk or deer.

I know dad used to talk about people routinely taking "sound shots." It sure seems with Hunters Ed programs, optics, and in many cases antler restrictions, things have gotten much safer.

I have a friend here in town that was shot in the stomach by another guy here, also from here in town. The shooter was/is a notorious dirtbag hunter and everyone steers clear of him. Anyhow, long story short friend was checking out something up on a small ridge, behind some brush, and shooter guy hears some rustling and shoots. Bullet hits thick brush and breaks apart, but friend gets part of it in the gut. Did not do serious damge thank god, but could have.

Friend has no desire to hunt to this day.

I don't believe this caca! Lonny conjures up Lone Howl every single time? We are expected to believe that? Or are we dealing with something else? Is there really a Lone Howl, or does Lonny have a dual, (phantom) account, which (I think) is not allowed? Has anybody ever seen both these guys at the same time, in the same room, or is Lone Howl a captive? Eek!

When I was a kid hunting around home and the 'coasties' would drive over we would try to avoid them but if we had to talk we would tell them about sound shots, locals hunting at night and trespassers being shot!!! it was great, we thought, we'd drive off laughing hoping we scared the crap out-a-them.

By the way. I think that the vast majority of hunting infractions are committed by locals, while nonresidents pay exorbitant license fees and generally conduct themselves lawfully. The locals are frequently guilty of hunting out of season and general abuse, shooting roadsigns and trespass, etc. Just my personal opinion, of course.
