we hunted hard but the bears just did not coopertate real well. how a bear can pass up a pile of jelly filled rolls for a damn acorn puzzles me. Denise had a real dandy at about 10 yards but could'nt get her bow drwn in time. it spotted her and boogerd out. this one was shot at about 4 yards. went 25-30 yards and did a running flip followed by a long death moan. bout 250-270 dressed out.

bh, what's the plan when you have one on the ground? Rug, or is there a market for the pelt?

We were served some bear stew by Steve Craig at a campout a few years ago. It was very good and not the least bit gamey.

So, how is it as table fare, roasts, steaks, etc.?

LB. we sell the hides with skull,feets attatches for 50.00$ each to a local furbuyer. there is a market in NAFA but i just don't feel like fleshing a bear hide. bear meat is fantastic. we personally like the smaller ones in the 125-175lb range as they tend to be the best (if young) and are much easier to drag out. the one last year i shot was 318?? dressed out and Denise and i had a hell of a time getting him out. she walked ahead with the lantern and i got 1 tug at a time. had to stop for many breathers.i'm sure you all have heard of "fatty/greasy bear meat" but i see it as nothing but a legend rumor. we have freezered about 35-40 bears and have NEVER had a bad one.trick is to get them gutted/skinned/cooled quickly. i know a guy that hunts bears just to brag about it and he carries them around for a few days hot-dogging them to everyone than gives the meat away to people. neadless to say thats where the "legend rumor" starts. we love all the meat but the boneless chops are KILLER!!

While I don't bait anymore, I can appreciate the work it takes to be successful.

Is there a market for galls in your part of the world? When I sold bears in the past the gall could often be worth as much as the hide, head, claws.

My 12-year-old son killed his first bear, first big game animal actually this past weekend. It was a spot and stalk deal, but there was quite a few berries and wild plums where we were hunting to help draw bears into the area.

gall bladder selling is a HUGE no-no [Eek!] . not sure where your from but in MN its no way!!. when i was young and broke i "thought" about doing it as they could bring BIG $$ but i never did.

We can legally sell black bear galls taken here, but be prepared to mess around with some paperwork. I think the most I ever got was $50. Not really enough to get overly excited about, but if your selling the rest of the bear you might as well include it.

I could be wrong, but I think the demand for bear galls has gone down over the last decade. Maybe it's Viagra or that some Asian cultures are finally letting go of past where rhino horn, tiger bones, etc really aren't better than modern drugs.

Lungbuster,

The rifle is a Rem 700 ADL that has been rechambered to 243 AI. I quizzed some of the locals here about the 243 AI a couple years back to get me onboard with the AI stuff.

My dad bought the rifle for me to use when I was 11 and most of my "firsts" came packing that 243 ADL with a 4X Weaver scope. I always wanted to buy it from dad, but never really felt right asking since I have brothers that also used it after me. A couple summers back dad and I were talking about that "ol' 243" and he said, "You used it the most when you were a kid and you have boys who will be needing a rifle so you might as well have it."

Anyway, the barrel was pretty much toast, the stock beat to shit, and most of the blueing gone. So it got a makeover and woke up after surgery as a 243 AI with a 23" #2 Douglas barrel, Rem Ti takeoff stock, and matte black teflon coating.

It shoots well with the 4 different bullets I tried and is low recoil enough and light enough for my small statured 12-y-o son to pack and shoot. I figured if nothing else it would make a good backup or loaner coyote rifle.

Helluva a long story when I could have just responded with "243 AI" [Smile]

Nice bars! Lonnie, here in Kalifornia, it of course aint legal to sell the galls, but...I have heard they go for a couple grand to the asian market here. Supposed to be a natural Viagra when dried and processed into a powder..or something like that.
