Anyone else have this condition? I've had it recur once in a while, about once every 6 months or so over the last 4 years. It's acting up right now and it does not feel good. [ July 06, 2011, 03:14 PM: Message edited by: smithers ]

I don't have it but know it can be painful. I do have arthritis in both shoulders.
A guy I worked with couldn't walk at times due to his condition. He wasn't acting, he was in pain. His knees and ankles would swell up.
Hope you get better!

Yep, walking sucks. I just drank some concentrated cherry juice which makes uric acid levels drop and it feels a bit better now.
Build up of uric acid in the joint is what causes the pain.
Arthritis in both shoulders. That's gotta suck. [ July 06, 2011, 06:04 PM: Message edited by: smithers ]

Smithers, what exactly does gout feel like? Is it more in the joints?

My daddy used to have gout and was hospitalized a couple of times it got so bad -- that was in the 60's and 70's. Don't know if they had any meds to take on a daily basis back then. Bruce had it and so does my brother. Both of them took/take Alpurinol daily. I do know that once Bruce was on the Alpurinol he never had another bout and swore by the stuff.

Bucksnort, gout is supposedly genetic. I have not tried any meds for it though, It's so infrequent.
ARDave, it's an acute pain that usually starts in the joint just foreward of the ball of the foot and is accompanied by swelling. It can sometimes spread to the shins and the knees.
The first time I got it I thought it was bone spurs. My dad has it as well but way more infrequently than I get it. Last time I Had a bout with it was 7 months ago.

I used to know somebody that was bottling black cherry juice in his basement. Really expensive stuff, he used to give me a bottle whenever I needed it for vanilla ice cream. OMG, was that stuff good! But it was sold primarily for gout and I didn't know and still don't know exactly what it is and how you get it?

I recently changed my diet drastically, and this is what led to mine flaring up. I was eating A LOT of fruit and fish.
Copy, pasta...
What is gout?
Gout is a kind of arthritis. It can cause an attack of sudden burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint, usually a big toe. These attacks can happen over and over unless gout is treated. Over time, they can harm your joints, tendons, and other tissues. Gout is most common in men. What causes gout?
Gout is caused by too much uric acid in the blood. Most of the time, having too much uric acid is not harmful. Many people with high levels in their blood never get gout. But when uric acid levels in the blood are too high, the uric acid may form hard crystals in your joints. Your chances of getting gout are higher if you are overweight, drink too much alcohol, or eat too much meat and fish that are high in chemicals called purines. Some medicines, such as water pills (diuretics), can also bring on gout. What are the symptoms?
The most common sign of gout is a nighttime attack of swelling, tenderness, redness, and sharp pain in your big toe. You can also get gout attacks in your foot, ankle, or knees. The attacks can last a few days or many weeks before the pain goes away. Another attack may not happen for months or years. [ July 06, 2011, 07:17 PM: Message edited by: smithers ]

One of the guys I work with gets gout frequently. He takes cherry juice and it helps. He told me his was triggered often by eating pork. Likely, the purines issue. He gets so sore he can't walk for days. Like any form of arthritis (inflamed joint) repeated inflammations of the great toe joint will ultimately lead to the body trying to repair the damage by flooding calcium to the area which results in calcification and what we often recognize as arthritis.

Yes, I'm sure. I have had two operations each to rebuild my shoulders after an at work accident. I was crushed between a railcar and diesel locomotive... it hurt but I'm still alive!
Might be why I have this cranky attitude you all love!
