This fathers day my son and me decided to go do a little fishing in a sand pit that the company I work for owns... About 12 years ago when I first started working for this company they bought a section of land for the sand that was there... This has been one of my company projects since the beginning and will soon be comeing to a end....
What we ended up with is two large body ponds of water anywhere from 5' deep to 30 ft' in depth and are seperated by a large dike.. This week I excavated a channel through the dike to join the two ponds and noticed alot of fish were moveing through this channel a few days later so I decided to fish it on fathers day....

The fish bite was pretty heavey and I spent most of my time takeing the fish off the hook and rebaiting while my son tended to the rods..
The bucket was about half full with an assortment of fish so we called it a day so we could get home and get them cleaned for tonights meal.. We had a few extra fish so I had my son take some over to the in-laws to enjoy...
My son said that pond fishing was more fun than sitting out on a lake in a boat, so I told him we may comeback for another day of fishing in a week or two....
Here are some pic.s of the two ponds and the channel where my son and I set up to fish... http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f208/TA17Rem/002-5.jpg[/IMG]] - http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f208/TA17Rem/001-3.jpg[/IMG]] - http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f208/TA17Rem/003-5.jpg[/IMG]] - http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f208/TA17Rem/008-2.jpg[/IMG]] - http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f208/TA17Rem/006-6.jpg[/IMG]] -

My tender years in Minneesota, the names of those fish were bullhead, sunfish and perch. Well, out here they are catfish bluegill and don't know what the other is, we don't have them? But, all are good eating.

I used to get a coffee can full of nightcrawlers with a flashlight, down at the golf course, right after the sprinklers went off. The next day, me and Darryl could catch at least 150 bullheads in Lake Hiawatha. Those were the days.

And, out here in a couple selected lakes, those generic "bluegill" can approach 2 pounds, actually, I think they are mostly red ears, but real lunkers, I kid you not! I never saw a pumpkin seed in Minneesota go much over a half pound.

We used to get crappies in Lake Nakomis (sp) off the dock with cut bait. Again, small fish, not as good tasting as the sunfish, we said they were "muddy". There is a lake north of here by Kernville that has crappie at 2½ pounds.

For me as a kid, a bass was a real trophy, didn't see many of them but I caught a ten pounder once, on a frog, complete accident. Some man talked me into putting it in his wire cage next to his dock. The next morning it was gone?

I did a lot of fishing as a boy, a lot more than since we moved out here. To tell the truth, I caught more carp than anything, sometimes I used to ambush them at the spillway and brain them with my 9 iron. Then I would run downstream and snag them belly up as they floated by. I just liked killing them.

We have some lunker carp, too. Probably 40 pounds, at least, in San Vincente Res.

I should do more fresh water. Maybe my grandsons will bait my hook?

You got the names right Leonard..
In Mn. we have 3 or 4 variations of sunfish of which some get bigger than others depending on the lake and amount of food source and predators. Some lakes get choked out with sunnies so they don't grow to big..

We are planning a trip to the river as soon as the water level drops for some big carp and suckers (Andy's favorite to eat) along with some channel cats... Hope to catch a few of the smaller cats and take them and put in the pond, they willbe better eating then in a few years...

Those fish are a hoot to catch on light tackle that's for sure.

My daughter bought me George Bushes "decision points" book he just released. Looking forward to reading it.

Happy Father's Day all!

To be honest, Bluegill is darned hard to beat for eatin'!

I cooked up separate batches of Bluegill and Crappie (the local favorite), and wouldn't tell anyone which was which until they told me which they liked better...Bluegill came out on top.

Just a pain in the ass to clean unless you've got some big ones.

That looks like a nice little fishin' hole there Tim.

Can't stomach Bullheads though...We used to sein net them out of ponds when I was a kid. I remember seeing them with these HUGE heads and little bitty bodies...probably from over population...

Never ate a "Perch"...down here "Perch", is a small sunfish.

Happy Fathers day to everyone..

I just finished up with my fish supper, turned out pretty good but had to give the wife a little coaching (German blood)in the kitchen..
I had her boil up some whole taters then cut them up and fried with onions. Had the fish dipped in a egg batter and then rolled in flour and seasoned. She fried half of them in olive oil and other half in butter till brown and then finished off in the oven.. Ummmm!! both ways turned out good but the olive oil was just a tadd better.... [Smile]

I agree, Duckdawg. A true bluegill is hard to beat for the fight and the taste. Crappie are pretty decent. Most folks around here consider green sunfish and bluegills to be one and the same, and most call them "perch", which they aren't. But they're still fun to catch and a great time if you need a place to jerk perch with a passle of little kids. About the only thing we ever used bullheads for was bait on our bank lines, but there was one time we found a bucketload of them in the 2# range.

Happy Father's Day to all. Spent it cleaning house and doing yardwork in prep for a week of vacation with the wife and daughter. Got the yard mowed, benches and hot tub shelter restained, yard fertlized and even got lined up with the roofer to fix my hail damaged roof. I like a day when I can get after it and feel like I've accomplished something when I'm done. To beat all, the wife got the call that she got a new job. Doesn't pay much more than the old one and isn't any closer to home than the old one, but the current boss is a real battle ax - abusive and blackhearted as hell. Even made her work an hour or two OFF THE CLOCK a couple times. It'll be good for her to be working for a better class of people.

Wow, the mention of Bluegill, just brought back my memories as a young lad' Lol..

I remember before I could drive, I'd have mom drop me off at one of the local rivers or ponds, on Saturdays, she went to Eugene Ore, and shopped with Grandma most of the day.

I'd sit out there all day most time's alone, well explored also. And catch the shit outta' blue's, on the good days..Didn't have a cell, or I-pad, Blackberry or whatever, and had a blast ! Can you imagine !

Anyway, I didn't have anyone to teach me to fish, so I kinda guessed. I used gold eagle claw hooks, and salmon eggs. It worked !

That barred fish is actually called a yellow perch, I think? Every once in a while we used to catch a real lunker while trolling for northerns and walleye. Maybe 10 or 11 inches, and that's a big perch, and they are keepers. Never plentiful, the smaller ones we caught on worms threaded on a long shank hook, just enough to make a "J" shape and break off the rest.

Well, it's 60 miles out there but my son made a shit pot full of marinated London Broil on the BBQ, with lots of fixins. Everybody pigged out. Then I talked to my daughter for an hour, they are in the Bay area, Marin, which is liberal country. She told me about a deer with a broken foot living in the bushes beside 101 and inside the fence. The animal people told her they tried to catch it two weeks ago but it is still there and she frets about it. I said they should probably shoot the damned thing before it causes an accident and a couple people are killed. She didn't like hearing that, but I thought I broke it to her very tactfully. Oh well? Yeah, my daughter the bunny hugger.
