Did Peter Fonda Commit a Federal Offense by Threatening President Obama? By Meaghan Murphy Published May 24, 2011
While promoting a new documentary at the Cannes film festival in France last weekend, Peter Fonda made comments that could be construed as threats against President Obama.
“I’m training my grandchildren to use long-range rifles,” the actor told The Daily Telegraph at the international film festival. “For what purpose? Well, I’m not going to say the words 'Barack Obama,' but …”
With those words, the “Easy Rider” star may have committed a federal crime. “Clearly, there is a federal law that prohibits threatening the president,” Washington, D.C.-based attorney Ross Nabatoff tells FOX411.com. “Now, the question is, is that a threat as opposed to him expressing his First Amendment rights? But you could conceivably construe that as a threat—he names the president. It’s a federal offense. He could be incarcerated.” Fonda’s comments could attract the attention of the Secret Service, Nabatoff said.
“They take threats against the president pretty seriously these days,” explains Nabatoff. “There’s a lot of angry people.” The Secret Service had no comment on the matter.
Fonda's attorney did not return a request for comment, and Fonda's representative was unable to reach the actor.
Back at Cannes, the actor wasn't finished. “We are heading for a major conflict between the haves and the have nots," Fonda said. "I came here many years ago with a biker movie, and we stopped a war. Now, it’s about starting the world." “There’s no room any more for a sissy and, like I said, don’t forget that I’ve got grandsons who I’ve trained with long-distance rifles," Fonda repeated. "We have to run like mofos to change this world.”
The fact that Fonda, 71, made his comments overseas could work in his favor should legal trouble ensue. “The federal courts may not have jurisdiction in France,” Nabatoff said.
Fonda was in Cannes promoting "The Big Fix," a documentary about the BP Gulf oil spill, a movie critical of Obama's handling of the crisis.
Last week while promoting the film, Fonda said that he "sent an email to President Obama saying, 'You are a f***ing traitor,' using those words... 'You're a traitor, you allowed foreign boots on our soil telling our military -- in this case the Coast Guard -- what they can and could not do, and telling us, the citizens of the United States, what we could or could not do'."
Fonda is the son of Hollywood legend Henry Fonda and the brother of actress Jane Fonda.

First of all, if the Feds can get Fonda for this, speaking in France, then the next step is monitoring our dreams.
I can't believe Peter and Jane are related. I used to know him and Brigitte, (his daughter) he used to keep his boat down at the end tie, close to where my parents were "live aboards" on B Basin, Marina Del Rey. In fact, he gave my parents a little Boston Whaler dingy that they could tow as a lifeboat. I always thought he was a cool dude. His sister is a friggin' traitor, for sure.
But, the question is, at what point is conversation prosecutable? Where can we express ourselves? Offshore, 12 miles? France? I don'tknow?
Anyway, I think his comments are uncalled for, that's nothing to talk about, especially to the Media.
But, I think it's interesting that he has such a strong opinion. Comments?

It is interesting, I figured all Fondas to be gun fearing liberals. I don't know why he said what he said but the fact that he "trains" his grandchildren to use guns is shocking.
Maybe he didn't get an invite to the inagural ball???

Then again, maybe he was just referring to the need to be ready to protect oneself from our HNIC's policies and what the consequences might be.
Long range shooting skills would come in handy during any kind of invasion by foreign entities... only he knows what he really meant.

Unfortunately, no she is among the living. She's 70 and looks real good for her age. They were talking about honoring her with an award for one of 100 greatest American women, I don't know if it happened or not, but it sounds like something Obama would promote.
Good hunting. LB

I think he was being completely sarcastic and think he is right there next to his sister and her believes may she rot in hell. Believe me when she hits the ground many a vet will pay a visit with relieving a few budweisers on the cursed ground they lay her in!

Who could have a problem with CAPTAIN AMERICA? That's a good movie, Easy Rider. Music is pretty good too. And, the scenery, I'm pretty sure I've been down some of those roads.
Peter seemed okay to me, and at the time, he wasn't really all that well known, Jane had made movies, Cat Ballou and Klute and people knew her but not Peter.
I have met a few celebrities, casually, socially, and Peter Fonda was a regular guy, no attitude that I ever saw. But, movie star boaters in general are less snobbish than the Hollywood scene. The actors I met in the marina and over in Catalina were like ordinary people. I especially liked Bobby Darin, I really hated to see him go, as he kept his boat in the slip next to my mom and dad and we saw a lot of him on weekends.
Anyway, I don't think that Peter is faking the whole issue, but I am very puzzled as to why he would say what he said?

I'm sorry, but Obama's wife has always impressed me as a mutt. The Media always fawns over her "style sense" but I don't see it? Always sleeveless dresses and those big shoulders? Too masculine for my taste, and a face that is actually goofy looking.
Am I that out of touch?
