A guy that works for me was telling me that he and his brother used to do that when they were kids. Pretty interesting.

That's an old deer poaching trick for having a slug in areas or times where slugs aren't allowed. Back in the day of paper shotshells, Michigan had a law on the books prohibiting cut or ringed shells. Really bad idea with tight chokes.

Have made them and shoot them all the time for fun. They definately work. Have made them and shot them thru 3 different shotguns in 7-8 years. Never one problem. Only problem is your reduced to a single shot usually with a semi auto. The leftover brass doesnt eject very well.
Edit: shouldnt say all the time....more like once or twice a year [ May 03, 2011, 06:17 AM: Message edited by: Patterson ]

When I was a kid my dad used to open the end of the shell and pour a little melted wax over the shot for long range geese.

Sudden thought: accuracy? How does this type of gadget stack up against a sabot or slug? And, is it just as lethal a a 1 ounce slug, hits as hard?

LB, I have never shot slugs before. Im guessing not as accurate.
I know I could put one in a 8-12 inch circle at 35-40 yards everytime. I also know they punch a hole thru old barn roof tin at 40 yds. They do some pretty good damage. Usually the part of the hull that comes out of the barrel and the wad are sitting right behind the tin. I assume the pellets keep going with decent energy still??

Just watched the video, definately interesting. But in todays age I think most people would just carry a slug.

Leonard, I don't see any way that a cut shell could be anywhere near as accurate as a modern day slug. I am also concerned that someone will shoot one of those cut shells with a tight choke tube screwed on up front, and blow the gun up. I realize that those cut shells have been fired through full choke barrel of a model 1897 Winchester, but I for one wouldn't try it in anything other than a cylinder bore.

Williams its more of a for fun type deal. Just do it with my pocket knife if im bored sometime.
Guess it kinda falls under my redneck side as buying slugs sounds to easy and im dumb enough to try it I guess. That said, ive never ever heard of someone blowing up a gun with them.

Patterson, I am curious as to which choke tubes you have fired cut shells through. I am not doubting you, just curious. As you know, the chamber is quite a bit larger in diameter than the bore. That being the case, when front portion of a cut shell enters the bore it becomes an obstruction of sorts. Pressure would rise considerably. Now when that cut shell hits the choke constriction, pressure would rise even more.

Rich, the guy that works for me used a 12 gauge single shot with probably a full choked barrel but they also used a "long Tom" that was definately full choked.

Modified is what stays in the gun for most anything besides turkeys. I wouldnt do it with a turkey choke though.
