I got a two year old HP laptop that is dieing and I'm not going to fire it up again until I have time to transfer my photos from it.
I'm considering a Mac to try to get a longer computer life for my money. I'm at work and have limited access here, but it seems there was a tread a while back about someone trying Mac. Was that You LB?
Also just bought a smartphone. Hard to believe I could get by with just that.
So, looking for opinions. The geeks at three different places considered a 2 year PC life as on the short end of normal.

Yeah, I bought a MacBook Pro 17 in November, I think? I got the three year protection and one year one to one, where I can go down to the Apple Store and get personal instruction, whenever I am stumped.
It is a way different environment, very hard to get used to but the machine is absolutely awesome. I never turn on my desk top but I had to buy a Mac compatible printer.
So, looks like I have well over three grand into this thing, but everyone I talk to that uses a Mac is a happy camper.

I have three in my house, none of them have any sort of anti virus and I have had NO problems with any of them in over 3 years......try that with a pc and see what happens. No complaints here.

Mac's are good solid machines...
The software is user friendly and they are less vulnerable to virus and cyber attacks. Mac's generally cost more but often run smoother than most PC's. Their only major drawback is compatibility with certain PC world programs. Mac's have always been highly thought of for graphic arts and magazine/print layout work.
I still have my original Mac "Classic"(1985?)stored up in the loft ...and it still works!!!

I use an iPod Touch 4 for 99.9% of my online browsing. If I was in the market for a new computer, I'd get a Mac, hands down.

It's teaching an old dog new tricks. I have been using a PC for so long that even simple commands, I have to stop and think. Apple makes some sexy shit, though.

I was out today with a guy who has an Apple I-pad. He left his truck unlocked and it got stolen last night, along with a few other things. The thing is, he had G.P.S. on his I-pad, and an app on his cel phone that would show where it was. So he showed me...it was precise enough that from across town, it not only showed me which house, but which part of the house it was in!! He got his I-pad back, and I put a burglar in jail. There's something to be said for putting G.P.S. or a Lo-jack on your 'puter.

Well, finally took the time to fire up this HP laptop and save my photos this am. I've always said you never regret buying quality and most everything I read and hear puts Mac at the top of the quality heap.
I've never been one to buy the "protection plans" that get offered. That being said, it sure seems that a majority buy the Apple 2 year plan that starts after the one year warranty.
LB, this mac learning curve...how much have you used the one on one? It's an hour and a half drive for me to the Apple store in Rancho Cuc. Not sure how F'ed up I'd have to be to make the drive. Hell, it's just down the street from Bass Pro. Could be expensive trips.

Pretty sure I'm going to go Mac Book Pro when this HP dies. Just trying to get a handle on what else, Warranty, One on One, External Hard Drive, Printer, geez, this will be new rifle type money!

It sounds like you are talking about the Apple store in Victoria Gardens, the same one I go to? But, for me, it's fifteen minutes away. Now, I have only had two lessons, and desperately need more, but I'm not learning much new stuff on my own, either. I need to start going regularly, I feel so stupid not being able to do basic stuff.

Yea, Victoria Gardens. Geez LB, you cheat with your PC, but you have your own forum/website. I just want to surf, research whatever I'm currently interested in and have a place for my digital photos.
If the Mac learning curve is too frustrating, another option would be inexpensive netbooks every few years and just consider them disposable.
