this video will choke you up. 86-year old veteran shows that he still has what it takes. A man who was an Army sniper back when it was him and him alone.
No spotter. No high-tech equipment to calculate range, windage and elevation. Just him, a rifle, and pure skill.
Very, very impressive.

His shooting skills not withstanding, it was the level of respect that went both ways that made that noteworthy. What a neat old guy!!!
I'm guessing that the 'back in the day' b.s. session that likely followed would have been worth a listen too.

Thats cool, but what about the other snipers that where involved dureing WW II , thats if shooting 300-400 yds is considered snipeing??? And also our allies dureing the war like Russia? I believe one of there snipers had more kills than any group of american snipers combined... ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif)

Lance, That is cool--read about him in one of the National Rifleman articles not too long ago.
TA--You must be referring to the Russian sniper Vassili Zaitzev, (sp?). He was the main character in the movie 'Enemy at the gates'. The movie was inspired by the book 'War of the Rats' about the urban warfare in Stalingrad.
Those old fellas really were amazing--would have been interesting to see what Chuck Mawhinney and some of those guys could do with the technology today.
They had to have the woodsmanship AND shooting skills to stay alive. Most of that came from growing up and hunting stuff--It would be interesting to see what percentage of today's snipers actually grew up hunting and shooting.

They didn't amount to shit, but it didn't stop them from getting on the telegraph and telling everyone how impressed they were with themselves.
Leave it to Tim to shit right in the middle of all the "feel good". ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

TA, from what I understand about U.S. sniping in the WWII European theatre is that it was from hedgerow to hedgerow, and that 300 yards was about the average shot distance for an American sniper there. I also spoke to a family friend who was an infantryman, who went into France shortly after D Day. He was NOT a sniper, but he said he never saw a German at 300 yards. He said the Germans he saw were on the other side of the hedgerow.

TA, You should have just stopped after "Thats cool". Everything beyond that only takes away from the importance of that video. You can go back and edit your post...it's fine.

Why would I ????
What pisses me off is there always has to be a most valuble player in what ever we do, be it sports, world wars and so on.. What most people forget or don't realize is its all a team effort, but for some reason the team is forgotten except for one key player that is singled out for winning the game or war or may have some special talent... Take that same person and put him in a ball-game by himself or out in the field surround by his enemy and see how well he does then.... Who's going to remember the guys that jumped on a enamy grenade to save there buddies, or the machine gunners that took numerous hits and still kept there machinegun going, or the guys that gave fire support to others that where pinned down and end up takeing most of the heat themselves or the medic's that responded under fire to help others and on and on... I'll remember all of them not just a select few!!!!!!

You should honestly just stay away from some posts Tim, you bring nothing positive to them.
There are individuals on teams that make the stories worth telling and hearing. Read Lone Survivor and tell me that an individual's story isn't worth remembering.
Give the guy credit and leave it at that. No need to try and pump the team when an individual is worthy of the honor.

Unlike Tim, you wont hear a hero toot his own horn.
And you guys think that my responses to this dickhead are a little on the harsh side, he`s been rambling on like this for years, it never changes.
Back on subject, I recently spent 2 weeks with my son-in-law who was on leave from Afghanistan, he`s received 2 medals recently one for capturing a terrorist leader in a local village and one for running into the line of fire to save a couple fellow soldiers who had been shot and were pinned down, after 2 full weeks of talking and hanging out....not one mention of these things by him, he didnt know that I already knew about it from his dad, I even hinted at it a couple times but not once would he toot his own horn.
Andy & I spent some time with a couple Iraq vets recently and we made a point to shake their hands and thank them for their service, they stopped us mid sentence and said "if you really want to thank us....just remember to appreciate what you have"
The man in the video is as humble as they come, I guarantee he doesn't think of himself as special in any way, these stories are told to give due honor to those who deserve it.
Tim, what you don't understand is by honoring this man we show appreciation for what they ALL did and still do. None of these guys are offended by giving someone the respect and honor they deserve, they are all heros and none of them care to be singled out and given a pat on the back.
Yes, there were brave souls from all around the world involved in that war and still today.

First off I watched that video a while back and really enjoyed it. You could tell that it meant something to everyone involved and that is what those types of events area all about.
Second, one of the main reasons I pop in here now and then is just to see what stupid thing Tim Anderson has said. I've yet to be disappointed, he always comes through. However, I do have to say he's reached a new all time low on this thread, and that is really saying something, all things considered.

No kidding, here there is an 86 year old WWII vet, (which there aren't many of those left) gets a little recognition. God only knows how many times men like him have "seen the elephant", and someone wants to shit on it...

That was a very special video clip. The respect going both ways was very evident.
Tim what are you thinking? Of course everyone that paticipates has a role and deserves respect but what the hell does that have to do with this meaningfull moment for this fine gentleman.

I just took a few seconds to review what Tim has said, on this subject. Apparently? he feels this Vet deserves no (individual) recognition for his contributions, since he didn't die in the process.
Killing a coyote at 500 yards is not the same thing as killing an enemy soldier at 300 yards. Why do I have to point that out?
This Vet isn't tooting his own horn, in fact, he seems very humble, if you ask me? He drills that gong with unfamiliar equipment, with some real experts watching. This can't help but put some pressure on him, but he sure didn't show it.
That's just it;it's one thing to say you killed a coyote at 500 yards, but when you have witnesses, sometimes you miss even the chip shots.
Anyway, I can't figure out your point, Tim? Were these people wrong to do what they did? Should the Vet have stayed home and told them he didn't want to miss Dr Phil, that particular day? I don't see what you are bitching about?
Good hunting. LB

If thats the case how did they find him out??? As for being humble, maybe he thinks that it was'nt that big of a deal since quit a few GI's where doing the same at the time.. In the Pacific when they were fighting the Japs it was'nt that oncommon for a GI to climp up in a tree and take pot shots at the japs...
If you missed the point don't worry about it.. As for JD and his buddy why would he want to talk to you about what went on, you would'nt understand it anyway...
